Lemonheads- Harlows, Sacramento Ca 11/29/22 4K UHD Multicam w/ DPA 4061 Audio It’s a Shame About Ray

I’ll take a little risk today and post this one. When I filmed this, the tour manager asked to see the video before posting. Well, we can’t find his contact info so I sent an email to Evan’s manager, John Kastner. No reply. Joe Burns- maybe you can tag Evan to see if he is cool with it.
Anyway, this was such a great show. I sang along a couple of times, forgetting that I had mics right next to my face. I hope you can’t hear it. Everything went ok with the shoot, except for the off-center anchor cam and the soundboard did not work for some reason.

The Lemonheads- Slim’s, San Francisco Ca 11/30/07 Digital Master Clone DPA 4060 mics Descendents

It’s the most Mediocre of all mondays- the Monday after the 4 day Thanksgiving weekend, and boy do I have a mediocre gem for you today.
In case you didn’t know, Brian McKenna and Abstract Entertainment are bringing The Lemonheads to town tomorrow, and they are playing the “It’s a Shame About Ray” album in its entirety! Can’t miss show!!

If you haven’t heard about the legendary status of Evan Dando/Lemonheads performances, let me fill you in on a personal experience. Back in 2007, Anonymous and I went to Slim’s to see The Lemonheads tour their self-titled album (the red one released on Vagrant Records). Evan had Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson as his rhythm section- I was looking forward to this one.
The show starts out a bit sloppy, and then Evan speaks after a couple of songs and he is not speaking very coherently. I could have sworn that I saw Karl and Bill exchange “oh shit” glances at each other. They play for an hour and he stats getting heckled toward the end of the show and he starts getting into it with a couple members of the crowd. I remember him standing at edge of the stage, middle fingers up, telling these hecklers “Fck youuuu”, but most people have no idea what is happening with them, so the crowd thinks they are being told off. The recording is a bit muddy/bassy because that is how Slim’s was.

We heard after the fact that Evan had a long flight and no sleep which contributed to this.
I know I am REALLY selling this show tomorrow (Sorry Brian), but for me I would rather experience something memorable than someone playing a boring set, sounding exactly like the LP every night. I go out of my way to see Evan every time I can. You should come on out.

The Lemonheads- Lowlands Fest, Holland 8/22/97 xfer from DAT Master Clone

I wasn’t planning on posting this, but it was on the DAT after that Suicide show, and the set sounded really unique. I then researched the timeframe and this looks like the last few shows with John Strom- this tour ended at Reading, at the end of August.
The reason it caught my eye (ear?) was that Evan seems to be teaching the band songs while they were onstage. The set has some killer covers that they seemed to be playing for the first time. Great stuff.
Evan catches a lot of flak for having some trainwrecks of a show, but sometimes they turn out great, like this one.
Sounds like the covers start 30ish min in.

The Lemonheads- Sacramento Memorial Auditorium KWOD Christmas 12/11/96 DAT Soundboard Master xfer En

Here’s the last (partial) show that I got from KWOD show in 1996. I was a huge Lemonheads fan and was hoping that the soundman wouldn’t notice this guy standing next to the board with a DAT deck in his hand, attached to the board by a cable. It worked for about half the set until he walks over, looks at the back of the board and pulls the cables out at the beginning of Hospital. I was thinking “NO NO NO”. Oh well, I was happy to get anything.
Mix starts out a bit heavy on drums, but gets better a few minutes in.

Lemonheads- Taste of Chicago, Grant Park, Chicago Il. 7/4/94 xfer from 1st gen VHS w/Sbd audio Enhan

Aw, I didn’t realize that today was Paul Baloff’s birthday. Search the archive for all of those newly-posted Doug-recorded Exodus tapes to honor him. The one I posted this week rips.
It’s video Friday- here is one that I spent way too much time prepping. This comes from Ross Weyman’s box of VHS tapes that he sent last month. He also sent me the NICE Sounding WXRT FM broadcast off of a DAT master tape. So I transfer the VHS and tried to synch the FM… and the encore won’t synch. No idea why, pluraleyes just won’t do it. You get 52min of great audio and 4min of average camera audio. Camera is nice and steady after a couple of minutes of instability.
This was my favorite era of the band- I saw this tour at the (crappy) SOMA live in San Diego and it sounded awful in there, so it is nice to put this one together. Thanks Ross!

Evan Dando- KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, Universal Amp, L.A. 12/11/93 DAT Master xfer Lemonheads

Next up on the 93 Almost Acoustic Xmas show are the Lemonheads. Well, it is actually just Dando but it was billed as the Lemonheads. 93-95 was the height of Lemonheads mania, so you can hear a lot of beatles-like screaming fans in between songs. Great stuff!

Over the next few weeks (weekdays), I will be posting sets from the 1993 Almost Acoustic Xmas. On the night of Dec 11th, I was driving to grab dinner for the family and I turn on KROQ and I hear that they were broadcasting the entire show live on the radio! I listened to KROQ regularly back then and did not recall any advertising for the broadcast. I hauled ass back home and grabbed a DAT and started recording. I was broke back then, so I have these sets scattered over about 5 DATs. I think I only lost a couple minutes of one set due to tape change- General Public. I even was able to edit in the interviews from other sections of the tape. The Blind Melon interview is a sad foreshadow of their future.
Anyway, hope you enjoy these. I became a fan of at least a few of these bands through this broadcast.
