The Decibels- Sacto Active Rock, Sacramento Community Cable 8/25/93 xfer f/Umatic Master Power Pop

Time for today’s video collections post. This one is from Lizz Fisher’s Umatic master tapes of Sacto Active Rock. Umatic tapes are the big tapes that TV stations use to broadcast shows, so the quality doesn’t get better than this! These are turning out so nice, stoked to be working on them.

Meat Loaf- KROQ Lovelines, Pasadena Ca 8/23/93 xfer from Master FM cassette Nakamichi 670ZX

Man, today has been a terrible day for losing people. I’d rather remember Terry Tolkin (Elektra A&R and all around great guy) or Lyman Sheats (He probably programmed your favorite pinball game) but alas, I have no content to share from them. Instead, I guess the post from today will be Meat Loaf. I don’t know why I used cassette to record this- the DAT machine must have been in the shop. I also taped Fishbone Lovelines on cassette around the same time, so this must have been the reason.
Also, this is the maiden voyage of a new cassette deck- the Nakamichi 670ZX. I was gifted this deck(!)- thanks Carlos. When I play tapes that are a bit flawed, the Dragon auto-adjustment freaks out a bit and they sound muffled. This deck is actually better for those tapes. You will hear a little wow/flutter at the beginning of the tape but it recovers quickly.

Jawbreaker- McGregors, Elmhurst Il 8/23/93 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Live East Bay Punk

I was finally organizing about 500 discs on random spindles into some semblance of order, and I came across these. I digitizied a ton of stuff for Corbett and the East Bay Punk documentary, and I kept the raw files for these ones. These come from Jason Ross’ collection of great tapes that he sent me a few years back.
This tape (as with most mcgregor’s tapes) is super overexposed. Now that I know how to adjust it with the Canopus, I will need to re-transfer this sometime in the future.
I’ll be posting east bay punk/gilman/lookout related artists all week!

Red Aunts- KALX Berkeley Interview at Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco Ca 8/20/93

Ah, Monday! Another 100+ degree day in Sacramento. It’s getting old, folks.
What isn’t getting old is fresh 30-year-old content from the KALX Archive! Especially with an under documented band like Red Aunts.
KALX interviewed the band during their show at Bottom of the Hill in 1993- then it sounds like they edited it together with some album tracks and broadcast it sometime later.

X- KALX Interview w Xandy, Berkeley Ca 8/13/93 xfer f/KALX Archive Reel Exene John Doe Punk Band

It’s early but not too early for today’s audio post. I digitized some of KALX’ reels a few months back and most of them sounded terrible- the tapes probably need to be baked. This is one of the only ones that transferred well. Good X interview with a DJ named Xandy.

Slack Babbath- One Step Beyond, Santa Clara Ca. 8/19/93 Bostaph Forbidden Thrash Metal xfer f/Master

Collections post time- this one comes from Bootleg Cowboys’ collection. I had originally asked if I post this because Scott Capizzano (Scotty Slam) was in Slack Babbath. But after digging into it, this might be a different band called Slack Babbath- there seemed to be multiple versions of the band back in the 90’s.

This one has a revolving cast of characters, but Bostaph is on drums for at least a bit. The entire OG Forbidden lineup is up there for a bit as well. Unfortunately, the audio is pretty glitched up. I will try to re-run this one on a different player once the TBC comes back. I already miss the TBC– it’s been ONE day. Lol. Crap.

Looks like this show took place 10 days before the closing of One Step Beyond, and the SF Stone. Nice capture.

Deborah Harry- KROQ Loveline Show 8/19/93 xfer from FM Master DAT Blondie Dr. Drew Poorman

For the uninitiated, Loveline was a show that ran 5 nights a week where listeners would call in with love problems, medical problems, etc and ask for advice. They would have special guest stars in the studio at times to give advice. I am still kicking myself for not recording every single one of these, but money and time were tight back then.

Ziggy Marley- Downtown Festival Tent, Rochester NY 8/16/93 xfer f/ 2nd gen soundboard complete show

Here’s a nice one for the weekend. Great quality and not on youtube from what I can see.

It’s fun going through the tape list to see what has made it out there and what hasn’t. I got this one from Joel Gershon, a tape trader from Buffalo who passed away in the mid 90s. He taped a ton of great stuff and seemed to have shows I have not seen before or since.

This one is a complete show 2nd gen cassette soundboard, except for 1 song which is 1st gen audience (Joel taped that one)
