Beth Orton- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 5/30/97 xfer from master tape f/label

I don’t think labels do this much (if at all) anymore, but back in the 80s/90s, they would give out tapes of special performances from the vaults. I have a bunch of them from Elektra with Old 97s demos along with other bands. It was a cool treat.
This one is from Eddie Jorgensen’s collection. Beth Orton’s performance from MBE back in 1997. I checked youtube and it has not been posted there, which makes me wonder how many of those tapes were given out.
Speaking of KCRW MBE, I have a TON of performances on DAT that I need to get on my PC and posted one day. Most of them are likely uncirculated. When I lived in L.A., my friend Kevin Haynes would tape the sessions off the radio (he was closer to santa monica than I was) and I would clone the DAT. I really need to free up more time to post more of this stuff.

Son Volt- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic 3/25/96 live in studio xfer from DAT Master Tape

Here’s a short one for you today, but it sounds really good. This happened a few months after I moved from L.A. back to Sacramento, so Kevin Haynes must have taped this for me and sent me the master tape. Thanks Kevin, wherever you are

Old 97s- KCRW Rancho Loco Show, Live in-studio and interview 3/3/96 xfer from master cassette

Here’s a fun one for Mediocre Monday. A very early Old 97s in studio performance on KCRW. I did not tape this off the radio, but I remember giving someone a bunch of good stuff in exchange for the master tape. It was muddy and muffled and I EQ’d it together as best I could. Still a really cool artifact despite the imperfect quality.

Geraldine Fibbers- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic Live in Studio 7/6/95 Audio only xfer FM DAT clone

Here’s today’s thing. I was working on a video of one of my all-time favorite bands, The Geraldine Fibbers and I found this DAT along with the other one. Here is a DAT clone of their appearance on KCRW MBE, right around when “Lost Somewhere…” was released. I love GF, especially pre-Nels.

Yo La Tengo- Alligator Lounge, Santa Monica Ca 6/20/95 Xfer from master video tape + DAT Audio Enhan

So let’s hope this stays up for a while… Matador seems to get excited about taking down videos.. so here’s a message from me to Matador video takedown person:
“Hi! My channel is not monetized- please claim away and make your money. I also shot video and recorded audio with permission. I am merely posting to share a historical document, nothing more… and it’s not like you are going to release this or anything!”

Anyway, here’s another one of the old 8mm videos that gets the full enhancement treatment via Adobe Premiere/Izotope/Pluraleyes. So happy to finally create final versions of these, after 25 years. This is the best show I have ever seen from YLT.

Audio rebalance (boost bass and guitar a lot) via Izotope

Thanks to Kevin Haynes for watching the DAT while I was up front videotaping. I wonder what happened to that guy?

J Mascis- Mccabe’s Guitar Shop, Santa Monica 5/7/95 xfer from DAT Master

So I was talking to Charlie Passarel and I mentioned that I audiotaped J Mascis on his first solo trek out west. J was clearly nervous- he made a mistake early in the set and ended a song abruptly, in the middle of a lead and looked around to see if anyone noticed. It made me laugh. He settled down and played a killer set. Man, I loved going to McCabes when I lived in L.A.
Oh and PS: I opened up the DAT case to transfer this one today, and there was the ticket stub. So you get that as well.

Bottle Rockets- Alligator Lounge, Santa Monica Ca. 4/22/95 xfer from 8mm master! LIVE

So the bottle rockets used to play unbelievably loud and I was only using the stock mic on the Sony TR81 camera, so the audio is totally distorted. I tried to get a DAT soundboard recording, but the traveling soundman was not allowing it. Oh well. It looks like there are ZERO videos of the Bottle Rockets on YT from 1995, so it has that going for it.

The Bottle Rockets- Alligator Lounge, Santa Monica Ca. 4/22/95 master videotape enhanced DAT Audio

Here’s one that I filmed 25+ years ago and it didn’t turn out very good. The lighting was low and the stock audio on the camera distorted, especially later in the set. I was able to brighten it up and degrain it in Adobe Premiere Elements/Neat video, plus Kingbean synched up the not great but not distorted DAT audio that I also did. So, this is as good as it’s going to get. I put the time into it because I love the band, plus there are zero full sets from this early out there.

Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett- Mccabe’s, Santa Monica Ca. 4/14/95 xfer from DAT Master Tape

Man, what an unbelievably brutal week. Work + the kids= no sleep and lots of stress. So I jumped through a bunch of hoops to go to see KEPI play with one of my all time favorite drummers- Roy MacDonald… and my car’s “check engine” light comes on. So, the night is trashed.

So instead, you get another new post to the archive. McCabe’s Guitar Shop is a magical place. They sell guitars up front, and the back room is an intimate performance room. They have hosted some huge artists there.

Wilco had released their first album “A.M.” 2 weeks before this show. Jeff & Jay came to McCabe’s to play this show, which is odd.- it was a one off show and they were back in L.A. a month later with a full band. This sounds way better than I remember.

Echobelly- KCRW Brave New World Live in Studio 12/3/94 xfer from DAT Clone

I was planning to post something else from this DAT and I came across this. It’s not on my list and not even labeled on the DAT. I went into sleuth mode and found out that the show they announced (Echobelly/Velocity Girl at the Roxy) took place on Wednesday 12/7/94, the Brave New World show took place on Sunday night, so I think that this is 12/3.
Being in Whittier at the time, I was just out of reception for KCRW. Huge thanks for Kevin Haynes (wherever he is) for documenting so much alternative and indie stuff in the mid 90s.
