Wilco- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca 9/10/02 DAT-CDR Clone Complete FM Jeff Tweedy

For today’s On This Date in History: Here’s another one of those KCRW recordings that seems to have been too early for their online archive, and it also doesn’t seem to be on youtube. I got a CDR of this one from a guy who taped it with DAT off the radio. I don’t think it was my old friend Kevin Haynes- we had lost touch by then. Nice quality.

The Bicycle Thief- McCabe’s, Santa Monica Ca 12/2/2000 xfer 1st gen VHS tape Bob Forrest Thelonious

This one is so rare and cool. Huge thanks to Ross Weyman for sending it my way. Speaking of Ross, I had not posted anything from the VHS tapes he sent me since early in the year. Still working to post something from different collections here. Got a spreadsheet to track it even.
So this show was filmed without permission. At McCabe’s. I thought that was impossible until I saw this video. That place is so small, someone had to have seen her filming. Kudos to the taper- filming in an arena is one thing, but bootlegging a video in a 200 capacity room is something else!
This is Robert Forrest, Josh Klinghoffer and the SF Brainwash Orchestra. Sammy Hagar Weekend is at the 9-10min mark. Oasis’ Champagne Supernova makes an appearance in the set as well.

Magnetic Fields- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica 6/13/00 Live in Studio 69 Love Songs

I don’t know what the deal is, but I have been sleeping a lot lately. I have been getting tired at night, which is usually my productive time and waking up late. This is why I have not done my collection post yet. I will try to stop sleeping so much and get to it today. I am still groggy now.

I really loved Magnetic Fields’ 69 love songs release. I have tried to see them multiple times over the years but something always comes up. I had tickets for the show in San Francisco where they do the entire love songs albums but I had a work conflict. I ate those tickets, yum.

I got this in the early days of CDR trading and lineage is listed as “CDR CLone”, whatever the hell that means. It does sound good, so it seems to be all digital up to my copy.

Yo La Tengo- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca 6/11/97 xfer f/ 1st gen audio tape live in studio

This one comes from my collection. This was one of the last audio tape trades I did in the late 90s. I can’t remember the person I got this from, but I received a bunch of KCRW/KROQ radio broadcast stuff that he taped.

This one is odd because the tape starts with an interview with James McNew while Ira & Georgia are playing ambient noise in the background. I think they interview other members while the ambience continues. They play some “real” songs later on.

Beth Orton- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 5/30/97 xfer from master tape f/label

I don’t think labels do this much (if at all) anymore, but back in the 80s/90s, they would give out tapes of special performances from the vaults. I have a bunch of them from Elektra with Old 97s demos along with other bands. It was a cool treat.
This one is from Eddie Jorgensen’s collection. Beth Orton’s performance from MBE back in 1997. I checked youtube and it has not been posted there, which makes me wonder how many of those tapes were given out.
Speaking of KCRW MBE, I have a TON of performances on DAT that I need to get on my PC and posted one day. Most of them are likely uncirculated. When I lived in L.A., my friend Kevin Haynes would tape the sessions off the radio (he was closer to santa monica than I was) and I would clone the DAT. I really need to free up more time to post more of this stuff.

Robyn Hitchcock and Tim Keegan- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca 5/28/97 xfer from WB Cassette

I used to love getting these cassette copies from WB’s and Elektra’s archives. Thanks to the unnamed A&R guys for sending them my way. Let’s do one of them for today’s On This Date in History.

Robyn & Tim toured (at least through Calfornia), as I taped his show at Melarkey’s in Sac around this time. Actually, I think I secured permission, then left and my friend Jim Hoffman actually taped it. I have a funny story around that one once it gets posted.

I really enjoy listening to Tricia Halloran’s interviews with artists. The conversations seem to flow naturally.

Son Volt- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic 3/25/96 live in studio xfer from DAT Master Tape

Here’s a short one for you today, but it sounds really good. This happened a few months after I moved from L.A. back to Sacramento, so Kevin Haynes must have taped this for me and sent me the master tape. Thanks Kevin, wherever you are

Robyn Hitchcock- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca 3/18/96 xfer from pre-fm master sbd WB Promo

Someone from KCRW asked me for some tapes, so you’re gonna get some KCRW things in the weeks to come. When I lived in L.A. for a few years (1992-1995), I got to be friends with a few cool record company folks- people who became life long friends like Todd Nakamine, friends who I had NO IDEA had such amazing old school punk cred (Tom Desavia), Rick (mentioned in the session here), Terry Tolkin (who I cold called at his desk to ask permission to video Luna) and more. For every A&R business weasel I met, there were cool folks like these guys to restore hope in the industry.
Every once in a while, I would get a box full of tapes like this- I would tape one of the label’s bands and give them a copy and they would send these to me as a thank you. The gool ol’ days! I am almost positive this didn’t come from Rick- I think it was from another WB dude whose name escapes me. He gave me all kinds of cool stuff.

Old 97s- KCRW Rancho Loco Show, Live in-studio and interview 3/3/96 xfer from master cassette

Here’s a fun one for Mediocre Monday. A very early Old 97s in studio performance on KCRW. I did not tape this off the radio, but I remember giving someone a bunch of good stuff in exchange for the master tape. It was muddy and muffled and I EQ’d it together as best I could. Still a really cool artifact despite the imperfect quality.

Geraldine Fibbers- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic Live in Studio 7/6/95 Audio only xfer FM DAT clone

Here’s today’s thing. I was working on a video of one of my all-time favorite bands, The Geraldine Fibbers and I found this DAT along with the other one. Here is a DAT clone of their appearance on KCRW MBE, right around when “Lost Somewhere…” was released. I love GF, especially pre-Nels.
