Yo La Tengo- WFMU Live in Studio Fund Raising Benefit,E Orange NJ 3/13/99 COVERS VHS Hifi Master-DAT

Here’s another really unique thing for On This Day in History. For many years, Yo La Tengo has helped WFMU raise money by playing live in studio for a couple hours during their fund raising telethons. The fun twist is this- if you donate $50, they will play any cover you request; or for $100, they will play an actual Yo La Tengo song. So you get a ton of coevrs and at least 1 YLT song that I heard.
This is the full 2 hour and 10 session, including the DJ discussion in between songs. If you want to hear YLT only, skip forard to about 15 minutes.
It’s really a fun listen.
Oh and PS: I know that this photo is from the 2000 WFMU fundraiser, but it was the closest thing I could find to represent this.

Wives- WFMU Live in Studio, E Orange NJ 1/9/95 xfer from low gen audio cassette Go-Kart CBGB Records

Collections post time, this one is from Jason Ross’ collection.

Man, there are a lot of bands who called themselves some variation of “Wives”. This is the band with Mary Dunham, Susan Horwitz, and Tracy Almazan and had releases on Go-Kart and CBGB records.

Jason usually got his WFMU tapes from a guy who taped them off the radio, but this one has a little hum in the background, and it isn’t Pat Duncan’s show. Might have been taped by someone else. Still sounds good.

Fifteen- WFMU Live in Studio, E. Orange NJ 4/14/94 xfer from low gen audio cassette RIP Jack Curran

We received news this morning that Jack Curran, bass player from the band Fifteen passed away this week. I had seen posts about him trying to get housed and back on his feet while sick recently. Terrible news. Jack also created the first documentary about 924 Gilman, released in 2007.
I dug through Jason Ross’ collection of tapes here and found this Fifteen appearance from WFMU in 1994. I think Jason was trading with a guy who was taping these off the radio since this has very little tape hiss.
I think Jack is performing here, it is hard to tell with all the lineup changes the band had.
R.I.P. Jack

Sleeper- WFMU Live in Studio, East Orange NJ 4/7/94 xfer f/ 1st gen audio tape Serpico Hardcore Emo

It’s been a while since I posted this late. Busy day. I had planned on a WFMU post that needs some audience participation, but I will settle for this one for now.
I will let Discogs tell the story of this band, since it is probably better than what I could explain:

Melodic punk / hardcore band from Staten Island, New York – USA.

Originally known as Sleeper (3), the band was offered $125,000 for the exclusive US rights to the name by a UK-based band of the same name, Sleeper (2). Sleeper (3) accepted the offer, and thus changed its name to Serpico.

Members:
John Telenko – Vocals
John Lisa – Guitar, Vocals
Michael De Lorenzo – Guitar
Marc Treboschi – Bass
TJ Quatrone – Drums

Dirt- WFMU Live in Studio, E Orange NJ 1992 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette

Hopefully I can get some help on this one. This is another one of those uncirculated WFMU tapes that Jason Ross got from a guy named Matt back in the 90s. Dirt is a fairly common band name, and I cannot figure out which Dirt this band is. None of them on Discogs make any sense. The closest one that fits the description (Hardcore punk w/a woman on vocals) is an Anarcho-Punk band from London, but they were not active in 1992. If you know who this is, please let me know. They kinda rip.
From Jason Ross’ collection

Update: Thanks to dl_bass26 for this info: Dirt (Dirt (13) on Discogs) were a post-hardcore/noise rock quartet from Atlanta who existed from about 1989-1992. They released 2 albums and 2 singles before they split up. Their singer/guitarist John Forbes later formed Mount Shasta, while the other members formed Seersucker.

The Queers- WFMU Live in Studio, E. Orange NJ 10/24/91 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette Lookout Punk

Continuing the rotation from the collections I am digitizing over here. Here is another one from Jason Ross’ collection. More early WFMU goodness.
Jason got this from a guy named Matt who taped this off the radio in NJ. Matt didn’t trade a whole lot so this one might be uncirculated. It sounds pretty damned good.
Oh, and for the lookout records group- my old fb account was hacked and I do not have access to it currently. This is another account I used to keep the daily posts going, please friend me here if you’d like.

23 More Minutes- WFMU Live in Studio, East Orange NJ 9/19/91 xfer f/ low gen tape Very Small Records

This past weekend, I flew over 5500 miles to see one of my favorite bands play 2 concerts. On top of seeing them, I met so many people whose work I have admired for many years: Jim Foster, Keith Hartel, Jesse Malin, Vicki Torch, Tommy Koprowski, and this guy- Pat Duncan.
I went to say goodbye to Dave Scott after the 2nd show and he introduced me to Pat- I told him how much those WMFU shows meant to me and went to show him the sac music archive page- and he tells me he loves the site without even knowing I was behind it! It was mind blowing. Tommy & Vicki also told me how much they enjoy the site- it’s nice to be appreciated. Thank you.
Pat talked about somewhat randomly falling into the WFMU DJ/ Thursday night live host role, and I could totally relate… kinda like falling into this hobby 37 years ago.
The cool thing about Pat’s show was that he welcomed local bands and touring bands into the studio. Some of those appearances became legendary (Green Day, Jawbreaker, Queers, Operation Ivy are a few off the top), while others became some of the only quality documents of the band in a live setting. This one falls into that second category- 23 more minutes was on Very Small Records, David Hayes’ label post-Lookout. Good stuff.

Nuisance- WFMU Live in Studio, East Orange NJ 7/25/91 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette Lookout Records

Collections post from Jason Ross’ tapes today. I had no idea that this was from WFMU- the tape just had Rancid and Born Against from Phoenix theater, then it said “Nuisance 7/25/91”. I opened it up, expecting another muddy Phoenix tape and there was this killer WFMU set. Thanks Jason!
I am pretty sure that this was from that guy he traded with who taped these and did not trade much.
This is from the tour after releasing Confusion Hill.

Mr. T Experience- WFMU Live in Studio, E Orange NJ 5/4/89 Xfer f/1st gen audio cassette MTX Dr Frank

Sorry, I am in brain fog today. In order to get my old ass through filming 6 bands with 2 cameras at Punk in the Park, I had to hit up the energy gum.. which always gives me this dull brain the next day. It’s like drinking monster but in terrible tasting gum. I’m really selling it! I should be a spokesperson.

Today’s On This Date is History was an easy choice. I was checking the list for any cool things that happened on 5/4 and this one popped out. I got it from the taper and it’s not online, so I assume it’s uncirculated. I love this era of the band- Jon Von was a force and his songs were goofy and fun. Just listen to What is Punk from the broadcast (or album) and you’ll hear it.

Das Damen- WFMU Live in Studio, E Orange NJ 3/11/89 xfer from audio cassette complete

TLDR version: Forward to 3min to get rid of the tape issues

For today’s This Day in History, I pulled this one out of the tape collection. It doesn’t seem that I got this from George Norton (who taped a bunch of these), as this one has some hiss and bad phasing for the first 3min. Forward past that if you want to hear decent quality. So, unknown taper/unknown gen.

This takes place after their 2 SST albums were released, and about 2 months before they recorded the Mousetrap LP for Twin/Tone.
