Miki Berenyi- Great American Music Hall, San Francisco Ca 10/27/25 4K UHD w/Schoeps Audio Lush Indie

Let’s do the Patreon Voter’s Choice first today! I just remembered that I haven’t started the ballot for this week- yikes! Get in on it ASAP if you want to vote on something cool this week. This week’s theme- Off List Audio.

Miki Berenyi came to SF last week for the last time and played a bunch from her MB3 releases and SIX lush “covers”! I was able to make my schoeps recording sound decent- it was very bassy and muddy. I EQ’d out some of the lows, boosted the mids, and then ran it through Izotope to bring up vocals as much as possible without it sounding bad.

There are quite a few people in the way of the shot, especially later in the show. I knew that GAMH were sticklers about monopods on the floor, so I brought this little selfie stick and popped it in my shirt pocket. I needed some support since the left hand isn’t all the way healed yet. It wasn’t as high as my usual monopod and it kinda worked… and then some tall dudes get in the way toward the end of the set and I didn’t want to move and ruin the audio sweet spot. So there ya go. This is what happens when you compromise audio and video. It’s not terrible.

Thanks to my friend (and Sac Muisc Archive board member) Jim Utz for the help with the camera pass. This probably wouldn’t exist without him!

Live Concert Video

Lush- Fillmore, San Francisco 9/7/96 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Shoegaze Miki Berenyi

I have been digging around in the VHS collections for some tapes for friends, and I keep coming across really cool stuff. I pulled some and put a pile aside and I am digitizing them as I get time, so expect some really nice OLD videos that are not circulated.. or at least not in this quality.
This one comes from Gary Shurtleff’s collection. I was never a “hide your camera from security and film the concert” kind of guy. People like Gary, Joe Burns and others turned this into an art form, getting some amazing results without anyone knowing except for them and a lookout.

Live Concert Video

Lush- Queens University, Belfast Ireland 6/19/96 SBD FM Broadcast xfer f/ 2nd gen Tape Miki Berenyi

I had a bunch of stuff available for today’s on this date in history, but this one jumped out at me. It is the longest/most complete show that I have before their breakup, following the death of drummer Chris Acland. Broadcast over the radio back in 1996. This is one of those later exceptions I made to trade audio cassettes. Glad I did- this one is nowhere.

Audio Live Concert

Lush- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca 8/9/94 xfer f/ DAT FM Clone Interview 4ad indie

For today’s On This Date in History, I digitized a DAT that I cloned myself back in 1994. From 1992-1995, I lived in Whittier (southern cal). I had a few good friends during my time there. Kevin Haynes lived up in the northern part of the L.A. area and could pick up a good signal from KCRW. Almost all of these old KCRW DATs came from him. Thanks Kevin!

I was excited to digitize this one as I didn’t remember a Lush KCRW MBE performance. Well, now I know why- they didn’t perform. It was just interview along with CD tracks. It’s an entertaining interview with Miki and (I think) Chris, which makes it historically significant regardless.

R.I.P. Chris.

Audio

Lush- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 4/6/91 xfer from master Audio tape Marantz PMD430 Nakamichi CM300

So here is something- I taped this show 30 years ago yesterday, and I don’t recall ever trading it out to anyone. When I pulled it from the cassette case, it was rewound and looked untouched. This one is probably uncirculated.
We tried to get permission to video that night, but it was a no-go from the bands so I snuck the PMD430 (which is HUGE) into the video bag and popped the Nakamichi mic (which is HUGE) out of the corner of the bag, pointing right at the PA. It turned out pretty nice!
I am just learning that Lush was at Cattle the night before and hung out with people and got drunk… and ran up a big bar tab. They even mention it during this recording. So awesome. Brian, just curious- did you guys comp them the drinks, or did it come out of their paycheck the next night? 🙂
This one is for Karen Simmons, who had a good friend (Chris) in the band.

Equipment used: Marantz PMD430 (like a Sony WMD5) and Makamichi CM300 mic… I think.

Audio Live Concert

Lush- KCRW Snap Live in Studio, Santa Monica Ca 12/7/90 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette Miki Berenyi

I forgot I had this one. It was one of those late era audio cassette trades, after I traded DAT only with rare exception. A live lush KCRW session is definitely a good reason for an old school tape trade. Unfortunately, the interview with Deirdre O’Donoghue (one of my favorite hosts) was edited out. Live songs only. It’s a little overdriven on the high end, but that’s kinda how Lush were back then. I recorded them a few days before this and holy high end saturation! I still need to hook up the DBX unit and do a proper transfer of that one.
