Pavement- Steve Lamacq Session, BBC UK 5/24/99 xfer from DAT to CDR Clone Stephen Malkmus Indie Rock

It’s odd- some of these things that I figured would be online and accessible just do not exist. It happens twice with these “On this date in history” posts over the long weekend. Here is the first.

First of all, this sounds like a live set- not an in studio session. I tried shazam’ing it and noting comes up, so it probably wasn’t officially released anywhere. All you pavement completists, tell me what this is, if it is indeed labeled incorrectly.

Speaking of Pavement, it looks like I might be getting some of my soundboard recordings on an official release. That’s pretty cool. I hope it materializes.

Oh, one last thing. I know that this photo is not time appropriate, but it is the only photo of the band with Steve Lamacq out there. The photo is from 2022, session from 1999.

Creeps on Candy- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 5/8/99 xfer f/master pre-fm audio cassette

One of the many reasons why I continue to work on the archive is the joy of discovering new bands. I had never heard of Creeps on Candy, but they were around for a short time in the late 1990s and put out one album on Alternative Tentacles. Kinda noise rock sounding. Someone mentioned that these guys pick up where Barkmarket left off. Good stuff.

Oppressed Logic- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca 5/8/99 xfer f/pre-FM master cassette Punk Hardcore

I have been lagging on the punk posts lately. I pulled this one from Rick Sylvain’s collection to make up for it. I recently became fb friends with Mike Avilez from the band, so this one goes out to him.

I have some of the KALX reels done, but I want to get the cassettes I have digitized posted first. Some really cool stuff on those reels.

Flaming Lips- BBC, Maida Vale Studios, London England 5/3/99 xfer from CDR close of DAT master FM

Here’s a cool one for On This Date in History- the Flaming Lips do a live BBC studio session a couple weeks before the release of The Soft Bulletin. Great stuff and nice quality.
When I looked online to check if this has been posted before, the only source I found was an audience video clip… which is kinda bizarre for an in studio session. I clipped a frame from that video for the image.

XMPT- Hogshead Brew Pub Old Sacramento May 1999 xfer f/Band Archive Tape

This one is from Dennis Newhall’s collection. I chose this one to post today because of the venue. The Hogshead was one of the many micro breweries that popped up during the 1990s. They closed down a loong time ago. This is the only recording I have seen from the place, so up it goes.
What you see here is what I know about the recording. Sounds like they do covers.
