Victims Family- Wednesday Night Live KZSU Live in Studio, Stanford 7/31/91 xfer f/1st gen tape Audio

Today’s On This Date in History comes from one of my favorite bands. KZSU has been doing a Wednesday Night Live show since the late 80s and VF played a set there in 1991.
Unfortunately, the person who taped this must have used either a flawed tape or a malfunctioning deck since it encounters some high end issues at the 45min tape flip. Otherwise, it’s awesome.

Audio Live Performance

Henry Rollins Band- Lollapalooza, Shoreline Amp, Mt View Ca. 7/26/91 Audio xfer from DAT Master

Back to the DAT project- here is DAT #4. I posted the Nine Inch Nails show a while back, I’ll be posting most of the sets- at least until my DAT batteries conked out.
This was the first big show I taped with the DAT- I got it less than 4 weeks before the show. I was all stressed out with trying to sneak the gear in (I could not get a D6 in for a show in 1989), but it was easy. I snuck in the TCD-D3, 2 battery packs, Sony ECM-909 mic, Marantz PMD-430, 2 nakamichi CM-300 mics, and a hundred feet of mic cable. We put the battery packs in the bottom of snack cracker boxes, and the PMD430(which is HUGE) rolled in a blanket. So funny.
I was super sick at the show, so you can hear me coughing at times.

Living Colour- Lollapalooza, Shoreline Amp, Mt View Ca. 7/26/91 Audio xfer from DAT Master

I don’t think I am going to have much time to post today, so it’s now or never. Here are the first 11min of the Living Colour set from Lolla 91. My DAT battery died and I had to switch the the Marantz PMD-430 with 2 nakamaichi CM300 mics.. so I will put those 2 sources together some day. I’m sure they will sound radically different.

Not the greatest recording. I should probably de-“woo” it at some point.

Janes Addiction- Lollapalooza, Shoreline Amp, Mountain View Ca 7/26/91 master xfer Nakamichi CM300

Hello! Today is the Mediocre Monday that (almost) never was… I had digitized this cassette last week, then either lost the burned data DVD or deleted it from hard drive without burning. D’oh! Luckily, I was able to do it again this morning.
There is a funny story behind this one- after we discovered the “secret” concession stand at the back of the lawn, we proceeded to drink way too much beer. By the time Jane’s came on, I could not hold it anymore- I had to find the bathroom. I found it ok, but I got lost trying to get back to my spot on the lawn. I wandered around forever, hopelessly lost, and finally just went to the car. That’s why you hear my friends saying “shayne’s a dick!” in between songs. I left the deck, mics and everything there. They found me asleep in the car. What a day!

Siouxsie and the Banshees- Lollapalooza, Shoreline Amp, Mtn View Ca. 7/26/91 xfer from master tape

It’s mediocre Monday. I had someone ask me for the Lollapalooza shows I taped. I had posted my DAT recordings a few months back. After my DAT batteries died, I brought out the giant Marantz PMD430 cassette deck and 2 Nakamichi CM-300 mics to tape the 2nd half of Living Colour, this set, and Jane’s Addiction. We were hammered by this time and you can hear some of our drunken idiot chatter on the tape.

Ice-T and Body Count- Lollapalooza, Shoreline Amp, Mt View Ca. 7/26/91 Audio xfer from DAT Master

Ice-T was next up, and this set was super memorable. He was billed as Ice-T and at that point, we did not even know he had a metal side project called Body Count. This was my first-ever rap performance so the 1st half was very enlightening. Seriously, it was mind blowing. Then Body Count came on and it was hard to even comprehend what we were seeing. The crowd was going nuts as well. So great, and happy to be one of the lucky ones to be surprised by the performance. Or maybe everyone knew about Body Count and I was clueless- wouldn’t have been the first time.

Butthole Surfers- Lollapalooza, Shoreline Amp, Mt View Ca. 7/26/91 Audio xfer from DAT Master

Next up on the bill was Butthole Surfers. I had seen videos of their performances, but this was the first time I had ever seen them live. I don’t know if a 2pm start time suited them well- they are better in the dark with strobes, videos, and dancers. Still cool.

Nine Inch Nails- Lollapalooza, Shoreline Amphitheater, Mt View Ca. 7/26/91 xfer from DAT Master

Ryan Jonik (Nine Inch Nails Archive website curator) messaged me and let me know that my NIN DAT recording from Lollapalooza was uncirculated. This was the first big show I taped with the DAT- I got it less than 4 weeks before the show. I was all stressed out with trying to sneak the gear in, but it was easy. I snuck in the TCD-D3, 2 battery packs, Sony ECM-909 mic, Marantz PMD-430, 2 nakamichi CM-300 mics, and a hundred feet of mic cable. I did not remix this- it has a surprising amount of low end, considering the mic.

Nuisance- WFMU Live in Studio, East Orange NJ 7/25/91 xfer f/1st gen audio cassette Lookout Records

Collections post from Jason Ross’ tapes today. I had no idea that this was from WFMU- the tape just had Rancid and Born Against from Phoenix theater, then it said “Nuisance 7/25/91”. I opened it up, expecting another muddy Phoenix tape and there was this killer WFMU set. Thanks Jason!
I am pretty sure that this was from that guy he traded with who taped these and did not trade much.
This is from the tour after releasing Confusion Hill.

Audio Live Performance

The Dwarves- Klub Kaos, Green Bay Wi 7/21/91 xfer from master VHS tape

(Warning- tech nerd alert)
For today’s On This Date in History, I went to Jason Ross’ collection once again. I am in the middle of transferring my data from a RAID that went bad (but data was still there) to a new larger RAID. Data has been transferring for almost a day now and it says that it has 6 more hours to go before one of the 2 external drives holding the data is done. Jeez, this is stressing me out. But anyway, long story shorter but still long, the collections post is gonna be late today because of this. Man, I hope this works. There is literally thousands of hours of work and tons of master videos involved. RAIDs are not supposed to fail like that. What an ordeal.
Anyway, I transferred this from Jason Ross’ collection a while back. The Dwarves themselves posted this to YT a while back, but this is better quality. I was able to work this on the tiny bit of space on my C drive
