Naked Raygun- Cabaret Metro, Chicago Il 7/19/91 xfer from master tape/CDR Clone Complete Show Mott

Lots of great things to choose from for today’s On This Date in History. I picked this one because it has been a while since I posted anything Naked Raygun related, even though I have over 50 live shows of theirs and many of the lowest gen copies still out there. It also has a cover of Mott the Hoople’s All the Young Dudes somewhere in this show, which is a treat.
Image for the video was swiped from Naked Raygun’s instagram- that poster is in the rock and roll hall of fame.
I tried to rebalance this one since it needs more guitar to my ears and it just buried the vocals, so you get it as is. Enjoy!

Ian Faith- Sacto Active Rock, Sacramento Community Cable 7/13/91 xfer f/Umatic Master Tape

Late start today. Here is one from Lizz Fisher’s Umatic Master tapes of her Sacto Active Rock show. This had to be one of the first ones she did. Ian Faith was constantly playing Sac in the late 80s and early 90s. They even might have been on the bill for the first Cattle Club show ever. Here is an upgraded version of the VHS one I posted a few years back. This one looks great and sounds even better. Glad I got to see the band back in 2019 at the Cattle Club 30th reunion show.

Leo Kottke- Mishiwaka Inn, Fort Collins Co 8/6/93 plus Winter Park, Co 7/13/91 xfer f/ DAT Sbd Clone

So. What a day. After getting about 1,800 hits to the sac music archive website, thanks to KQED’s article, we are posting something that has nothing to do with the focus of said article. Lol. Sorry.

When I pick these On This Date in History content, I look for something that is decent quality and not accessible online. This was the only obvious pick. I got this back when I was in the Grateful Dead DAT trading circles in the 90s. Pristine quality.

This has 2 shows. The 8/6/93 show is supposed to be 80 minutes, but I can’t figure out where one show ends and the other one begins. So, screw it you get them both. Bonus Leo- Enjoy!

Generator- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 1991 xfer f/low gen soundboard tape Operation Ivy Rancid Tim Matt

I was planning on posting a video today, since it is Friday… but I am working through Eggplant’s latest box of tapes and this one is too good.
Generator was a very short-lived band that Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong started prior to Rancid, and after Downfall ended. I don’t recall ever even hearing about any other generator tapes other than the 5/3/91 video that Rodney Parker filmed. This is amazing. 30 minutes long as well.

Vomit Launch- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 7/13/91 DAT Master Audio Soundboard Enhanced

Here is another one from DAT#3. 3 down, 1850 to go! I posted this one a couple years ago, but this one sounds much better- it has been rebalanced with izotope.
This is probably my favorite VL show- it captures the Cattle Club vibe perfectly. Drunk Jerry trying to announce the band but no one has their shit together, Trish begging people not to leave, and lots of funny between song banter. It’s a classic in my book.

Rebalance in Izotope: flat Vocal, boost bass, boost drums, boost guitar.

The Rosebuds- Cattle Club 7/13/91 Audio Only xfer from DAT Master Enhanced

I posted this show a couple of years back, but that was before I had Izotope so the board mix was not balanced. I was able to make it sound pretty good with the rebalance. Guitars distort for a few seconds at the beginning.
Btw, when I talk about the board mixes not being great, I am not bagging on my good friend and Cattle Club soundman Eric Bianchi. He was responsible to make the room sound good, and if stage volume was high, the board mix was not going to sound great in a club of that size. I am thankful he was so cool and supportive over the years.

Mr. T Experience- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 7/12/91 xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Rebalance MTX

Onward with the DAT transfers. This one is DAT #2- a soundboard recording of Mr. T Experience at Cattle in 1991. I never really gave this show a proper listen because there was very little guitar, bass or drums in the mix. Luckily, Izotope was able to fix the mix and make it listenable. Usually when you adjust a mix this much in Izotope, it starts to sound funny but this one cooperated pretty well.

Groovie Ghoulies- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 7/12/91 Audio only Soundboard xfer from master DAT

Remember when I mentioned that I started transferring all of my DATs, starting with #1 and working my way forward? That was when I posted that D.I. Cattle Club show. Well, I got sidetracked as usual. Here is the other show on DAT #1- a Groovie Ghoulies opening set with the old L.A.-based version of the band. The mix wasn’t perfect, so I did what I could to fix it in Izotope.

Crankybox- Cattle Club, Sacramento 7/91

Cattle Club show w/Helen Keller Plaid & Young Fresh Felllows, July 1991. Lousy video and audio but proof that Karl played with Crankybox. “Stay” started as a jam session with Karl and Derrick and perhaps Dave Simpson, and then reworked by Steve for Crankybox. This was the first of I think only two gigs with Karl. Thanks for helping us out Karl! It was a piece of cake for him to learn all of our songs quickly – he was a genius! Joe Palomina (drums), Karl Lane (bass), Aaron, Steve.
