Green Day- Tokyo, Japan 2000? xfer from DAT Master/Clone Audio Soundboard Live

Man, I hope I don’t piss anyone off by sharing this one. When we were doing work for the documentary, I transferred this DAT. It just said “FARGO” on the J-Card. After listening to it, the show is obviously from Tokyo. It is ROUGH- not only is the mix super raw (sounds like a monitor mix), but Billie Joe has laryngitis. A classic “the show must go on” moment, and they still kick ass.

Pavement- Guilty, Ebisu, Tokyo Japan 1/11/96 xfer f/DAT Clone Audience Complete Indie Rock

Oh wow- I pulled this DAT to work up for today’s On This Date in History and it sounds really nice after an EQ job. According to my list, I got this from the taper but the only person I recall trading tape with in Japan at the time was Saki Honma. I don’t recall her using bass-heavy mics such as these. Maybe she did later on. Hm.

The raw tape was a bit heavy on bass and lacking in low end, so I really pushed the EQ and I am really happy with it. Oftentimes, the midrange and high end get so overpowered by the bass that an EQ like this won’t work.

Melt-Banana: Loft, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan 11/19/94 xfer f/DAT Clone Punk Thrash

Man, has it been a DAY so far. More on that later. That TSOL that I posted earlier for today’s On This Date in History actually happened in MAY of 2020. No idea how I screwed that up. Consider it a bonus post.

Instead, let’s do this one that my friend Saki Honma taped 30+ years ago. Saki was a big Uncle Tupelo fan, flying from Japan to see the band’s final shows. We lost touch later in the 1990s. I wonder what she is up to now.

This is a very early Melt-Banana show. It sounds great, but there is almost no crowd noise at all in between songs. I had to keep checking to see if the show was over since it was so quiet. Sounds like this might be incomplete, but there was still room on the DAT so maybe that’s all there was.

Big Star- Club Quattro, Tokyo Japan 6/3/94 xfer from dat master clone live full show

tonight, I get to do one of my least favorite things- posting to the website from my phone because my internet connection is out. I really hate doing big compute tasks on the phone. I guess I am old, I need a pc.
Anyway, here is a show that our friend Saki taped when Big Star went to Japan in 1994. It sounds only okay, but it appears uncirculated.

Live Concert Video

Young Fresh Fellows- Tower Records, Tokyo Japan 2/21/93 xfer from DAT Master Clone

On This Day in History- we have a pretty nice quality in-store performance from the Young Fresh Fellows in Japan. I am pretty sure that my old friend Saki Honma recorded this one- she is/was a huge Uncle Tupelo fam, even flying in from Japan to see their last shows. I have not been in contact with her for over 25 years.. I wonder how she is doing..

Shonen Knife- Inkstick Factory, Tokyo Japan 6/22/91 xfer from DAT Clone Complete Show

Here is a quick one for today’s On This Date in History. What a day. I will probably make a tab on the ol’ website to poke fun at these last 24 hours sometime soon.
But enough vagueposting. I got this one from my old friend Saki Honma- I met her at Uncle Tupelo’s last show at Mississippi Night, and then we traded DATs for a few years until we lost touch. She got this from the taper as a DAT clone, then cloned it for me.
The recording is clear but thin. It lacked bass so I used Izotope Rx8 to bring the bass up A LOT. The odd thing is that the bass is in the mix (and a little too loud) during the first song, then drops out. I wonder if the bass player was having an issue.
Anyway, a nice EARLY recording on the eve of what I think was their first US tour. They played CBGB in 1990, but I don’t think that one was a full blown tour.

Echo and the Bunnymen- Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo Japan 1/18/84 Soundboard analog master-DAT clone full

Doing these “on this day in history” posts can be tough- I need to check through my lists for something that happened on that day and then look around youtube, live music archive, etc to ensure that the show has not circulated…
Well, this one HAS circulated, but I don’t think it is out there in this quality. The great thing about being one of the early DAT traders was that you were able to get things like this in pristine quality with a well defined lineage (Deadheads would get bored I guess lol). Other posts online of this one are unknown lineage. I have had people tell me “this sounds better than the bootleg cd out there” about other shows and I am like “damn right, this is a clone right off of the DAT master”. That probably applies here.
OK, enough nerding. Here’s a NICE echo and the bunnymen board tape from Nakano Sun Plaza in 84. Enjoy.
