Here’s another show that still needs to be edited, but I wanted to get this one angle out before this weekend. This show was awesome- A FREE Surrogate Brains show in their hometown! So the show starts and they open with a song that sounded familiar, but it wasn’t theirs… about 20 seconds in, I realized that it is “Achtung” by Stockon legends The Authorities. Wow, odd and cool way to start the show. Then they start the next song- “I Hate Cops”. HOLY SHIT THEY ARE PLAYING THE ENTIRE “Soundtrack for Trouble” 7″! A bunch of people were reacting the same way- holy shit, sing along, jump on stage. I hope the camera work holds up because I was a little excited. Anyway, I am blathering on because The Authorities are PLAYING 3 SHOWS THIS WEEKEND. You MUST GO. DNA Lounge tonight, Gilman tomorrow night, Whiskey Barrel on Sunday. go go go.

Out of all the bands at the Lookouting, Surrogate Brains was the one band who I really loved the most after rediscovering them. I filmed them at a show in 1988 and have had their 7″s for a while, but their songs have really held up. LOVE America the Machine. I am bummed that I can’t go to the show at Casa (if it is happening). Part 1 of this is filmed with the monopod in my pocket, so it is not as good as most of the others. I then find the perch that I used for the rest of the fest, and part 2 and 3 are MUCH better. So glad I was able to see them twice. I hope they keep it going.
I had not seen Surrogate Brains since 1988 in a tiny rehearsal studio, opening for the Accused. They were one of the most anticipated bands of The Lookouting for me, so when they added a show at Ivy Room, I had to go. The Ivy Room has a very short stage, so I had to boost my camera to about 11 feet high or so. That means no zoom/pans. Hope you still enjoy it!

This was Surrogate Brains’ first performance in about 30 years. I think it was the best one. Gilman was a shorter set and they were 1 band in a 7 band bill.
I posted video of this show last year, but this is my audio recording done with my Sony M10 and DPA 4061 mics. It sounds a bit better than the video, and the bass is much fuller on this one.

I missed yesterday’s post- my flight home was cancelled yesterday, which caused all sorts of work and travel chaos. I made it home last night, on an indirect flight. Air travel is a nightmare right now. Anyway, here is a fun one- Steve Rogers’ mid-90s band The Verdicts. They even do a Surrogate Brains cover of If The Things They Say Are True (from Surrogate Serenades) at about the 4:00 mark. If anyone recognizes this venue, please let me know. It’s pretty unique with the stage being small, but with a tall drum riser. I do not recall a venue looking like this when I lived in L.A. in the mid-90s.

WARNING- This video is super dark. They only had 1 incandescent light bulb lighting the place. Sorry. Watch the end- lots of drunken hijinks by Jimmie Couch and other old friends!
The first video camera I bought was an Aiwa VP-88 back in 1988. I bought it on clearance at Montgomery Ward, and since I was clueless, I thought that all cameras operated basically the same way. The VP-88 had TERRIBLE low light sensitivity, which is why so many of my videos are very dark. This show only had 1 light bulb for lighting, so it was impossible to see. Jim McLain worked some magic (seriously MAGIC- HOW does he do this??) and you can now actually watch this video, rather than a black blob! Thank you Jim!!
….THIS IS ONLY A TEST…… Nick Slurb playing with members of Surrogate Brains at a downtown rehearsal studio in Sacramento, CA in June 1988. Note: This video was originally recorded in a very dark environment. The video had to be brightened to even see the actual performance. Hence the quality. This was uploaded to show to members of the band Surrogate Brains.
