Civil War Rust- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 11/28/09 xfer from master video Pat Wright Archive

I’m really excited to introduce a new collection that I picked up yesterday. Pat Wright was a longtime KALX DJ and a volunteer at 924 Gilman for many years. I did not know him well, but I saw him around all the time.
He passed in 2020. This obit from slingshot collective seems appropriate to share:
“Pat was a fixture at the 924 Gilman Street all-ages punk venue in Berkeley, helping hold things down in the nuts and bolts sort of way. Who’s sweeping and mopping the floor at the end of the night after the show? What needs repair? What is the work that needs to be done to hold the project together, people wise and the physical space? Always an eye towards what holds a project together. The real sh*twork and a sense of fair sharing of the work, not the glamorous stuff. And the love and appreciation for the people.”

So I stopped in Fairfield and saw my old friend Jeff Armstrong yesterday (also a Gilman fixture for years) and picked up 3 totes full of DVDs. There are years worth of complete shows at Gilman, all filmed like this one- from the heater support above the crowd. This disc alone has sets from Emily’s Army, Violation, Decent Criminal, Civil War Rust, and Poor Mans War… and that is just 1 disc of hundreds. Thanks to Pat for ensuring that this era was well-documented.

Jeff Pezzati- Detroit Bar, Costa Mesa Ca 11/21/09 Acoustic Duo Digital Audio Master-CDR Naked Raygun

This one is a really cool rare solo performance from Jeff Pezzati of Naked Raygun. I checked around and this might be the only solo live performance he has ever done. He did release a solo EP which is great, I think that one is still on bandcamp… but this is the only solo performance I have ever heard of.

For years, I was totally puzzled as to why Jeff would be halfway across the country doing a solo set… then I read the taper’s notes. This was a benefit show put on by Joe Nelson, before he started Trust Records. It benefited The Eli Home, which is a shelter for abused mothers and their children. Wow. Just when you think you couldn’t love the guy any more and he does this.

You get 4 Raygun songs, 2 The Bomb songs, Mel Brooks, The Jam and New Order covers. Hot damn! I don’t know who the other guitarist is, other than it saying “the guitarist in The Bomb”. EDIT: Guitarist is Jeff Dean.

New Thrill Parade- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 11/8/09 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette No Wave

The performance date of this show (from Robert Eggplant) is somewhat of a mystery. I dug around on the internet and found that New Thrill Parade opened up for a band called Entertainment at Gilman on 11/8/09. If anyone has better info, let me know. Since they were somewhat local to Gilman, they could have played there a number of times.
I had never heard of this band. (from Discogs) New Thrill Parade were an experimental, no wave rock band originating in Santa Cruz, CA. Members include Amitai Heller (vocals), Steve Whitwill (bass), Troy Delaney aka DeSanto, Aleksey Bogdanov aka Rooski, Marcello Fama (saxophone, noise), Adam Payne (Moog), Sara Bebop (saxophone, backing vocals), Loric (guitar).

Jason Isbell- Blue Lamp Sacramento Ca 11/7/09 master soundboard/aud Matrix Drive by Truckers complet

And here is the real collections post for today. My good friend Anonymous recorded this one back in 2009. It’s crazy that Isbell is playing such big venues now. He played Blue Lamp TWICE in 2009!

This one sounds fantastic. He used a soundboard feed paired with his Neumann KM100 on stage mics with AK40 capsules.

I really like the early solo sets as he plays a bunch of DBT songs that he wrote during his stint in the band.
