Anthrax- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/12/24 4K Master w/Schoeps Audio Thrash Metal

I only did Thursday and Saturday at Aftershock this year and it makes me wonder how I ever did all 4 days. Man, I am TIRED.
My cousin Tony came by with his truck this morning to help me out so I decided to post this one today for him- Anthrax is one of his favorite bands. I am still puzzled as to why Anthrax, one of the “big 4” of Thrash, is playing a 45 minute set at 4:15 in the afternoon. Slayer headlined Thursday… and Anthrax headlined (or was 2nd billed) on Thursday in 2021. They even got the shaft on stage configuration- they were playing right into the sun. Brutal. They were still great and it clearly didn’t seem to bother them.
This is the only set that I used the ZS70 for- it is an inferior camera to the ZS200, but it has a way better zoom and with the stage being so bright, I figured it was the right choice and I was right about that. The sound in the spot that I initially set up in was awful- not only was it overly bassy/muddy but I heard a lot of high end swirl as well. keep in mind that this audio is AFTER I eq’d a lot of the bass out of the low end. I moved to a better sounding spot about 20min in and it sounds a lot better from then on.
8 song greatest hits set. Everyone I talked to about it loved them.

Anthrax- Heart Health Park, Sacramento 7/30/22 4K UHD Full Show Enhanced w DPA 4061 audio

Like Paul Piazza mentioned, this show was super difficult to shoot. The wind picked up and blew from behind the stage toward the crowd, which brought all of the fog machine smoke in front of the band. Combine that with the LED lighting and you have one hell of a mess. I did my best.
It was a fun show. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed in the same canned (EXACTLY the same every night) and short set (12 songs)… but what they did play was excellent. This is the best I have heard Joey sound live.

Anthrax- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/7/21 4k LIve Enhanced with DPA Audio

Here’s the only full set I was able to capture on Thursday- they really pack those sets in. After my battery conked at Exodus on the dreaded coors light stage, I decided to leave a few minutes early so I could get to the Kolas stage on time. I underestimated that walk again and had to scramble to get there right when they started.
Joey takes a fall at about the 16:50 mark of the video (during Madhouse) but doesn’t miss a bit of the song. The video thumbnail shows him pointing out the offending part of the stage to stagehands.
Sounds really good- the DPAs sound way better here than at the show at Ace of Spades a few years back. I think that Kolas stage was my favorite one.
Joey is a little pitchy. The pandemic layoff was not good for vocalists, for sure.

Mr. Bungle- Warfield, San Francisco Ca. 2/8/20 Live 4K UHD Live Video Scott Ian Mike Patton Lombardo

Here is a first look at the Mr. Bungle show from last Saturday night. I need to recover another 5-10 minutes of the show (including my favorite song of the set, The Crumbsuckers’ Sit There), plus I need to degrain it and hopefully find a better audio source to synch to it. Stay tuned. Regardlerss, this turned out pretty damned nice. I LOVE the ZS200.
So I went into this with no expectations. I figured they’d play the demo and a few covers as a goof and be done. I did NOT expect for my face to be completely melted off. What an amazing show- you MUST GO if you have the opportunity. Trey is a beast on lead guitar, Lombardo is (imho) the best metal drummer ever, and it was obvious they were all having a blast. Scott never stopped smiling!
I was able to cut down on the amount of out of focus shots by turning on continuous AF, but I realized it was eating batteries like crazy so I had to shut it off for the last 15-20 min.
MVP of the night includes the person who got me tickets (you know who you are- thanks!) and Daniel Hague, who not only gave up his spot to me so I could film, but he also stood in the merch line so I could get a shirt! Thank you so much.

Anthrax- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca. 3/14/91 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape LIVE fromthenosebleeds

Man, today was intense at work, hence the late post. Here is one from Gary Shurtleff’s vast collection of videos– for some reason, I have a 1st gen VHS in his VHS collection, but he shot the master. Maybe it was a safety copy. Anyway, here they are opening for Iron Maiden. Really nice looking video and gary does a nice job on the arena vids with that zoom lens.

Anthrax- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca 3/13/91 lossless xfer from 8mm master Enhanced Thrash Metal

Trying to post a variety of videos and sources this weekend. When I went over to Chris Eng’s place in February, he found 3 of Gary Shurtleff’s 8mm master tapes, so I took those back home and digitized them for Gary. Since Gary gave the OK for me to post any Sacramento-based stuff here, here is an Anthrax show that he filmed in ’91, right off the master. This is the one show out of the 3 tapes that qualifies for posting here. Expect the rest on his killer @bootlegcowboys channel. Some focus issues at times.
Totally unrelated to this (nerd alert), I have not mentioned this, but all of the recent (non-multicam) videos that I have filmed with the new Lumix G9ii have been sitting here since I did not have a PC set up that was equipped to handle the 4k .mov files. Last night, I finally got the “new” pc that I built 2 years ago down and integrated into the studio here. That was stressful, dodging cables and making sure my fat ass didn’t knock over the RAIDs after a drink or 2. But it’s working and rendering an Unprovoked set now- expect more local stuff in upcoming weeks.

Anthrax- The Omni, Oakland Ca 7/2/87 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette Thrash Metal

This one comes from Gary Shurtleff’s collection of audio tapes. He did not tape it, but is confident that this is a 1st gen. It’s an average audience recording for the time. I was able to EQ to sound a bit better.
It’s a typical setlist from the 1987 tour. Unfortunately, the “Livin’ After Midnight” cover cuts off right before the lead break.

7 Seconds- Anthrax, Norwalk Ct. 11/30/86 xfer from low gen VHS Kevin Hardcore Punk

I probably have too many projects going at once- today’s post comes from a project where I go through the list of already-created DVDs for any Sacramento-related content. I am working alphabetically, and am on Numbers and A’s so far. Still have the rest of the alphabet to go. Tons more 7 Seconds to be posted.
I am also digitizing some of my and other stuff for friends. I am almost done with most of those (except Brian McKenna’s and Dal Basi’s big boxes o’demos). I need to get tapes back to you all, and get the rest of those posted.
Plus, I am working on my master tapes and getting those posted, sometimes with the help of King Bean for audio synchs.
So we are not running out of things to do over here. If you’d like to help add posts to the archive, there are hundreds of existing posts on youtube that could be mapped, so please let me know if you’d like to help.

Today’s post comes from the 1980s tape trading underground. There were certain venues where you knew people taped a lot- City Gardens, Houston Venues, Washington DC, and this one. There was one guy who filmed a bunch of the stuff at The Anthrax club.

I didn’t film or digitize this one, so no credits this time.

Anthrax- Harpo’s, Detroit Mi 4/3/86 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Thrash Metal

I figured that I would post this one first and give you some time to join the Patreon voting tier (only $10/mo) before I send out the vote this afternoon/evening. Next vote- “no list” audio- usually soundboards/etc that I taped and were sensitive at the time. Sign up- it’s fun!

One of my first VHS tape traders in the 80s was a guy based in Detroit who had a ton of great/unique stuff. He had a lot of shows filmed at Harpo’s in high quality. Most of those tapes are now gone from the great VHS purge of 2002, but I was able to get an upgraded copy of this one. I wonder who taped this- I don’t know if (legendary filmer) Otto did smaller venues such as these…

Anyway, this is an EARLY Joey Belladonna show. So cool.

Anthrax- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 7/7/84 xfer from master audio cassette Neil Turbin Thrash Metal

I just saw a facebook post from Charlie Benante that it was Scott Ian’s birthday on 12/31. Wow, imagine having that date as a bday- there’s always a party. It looks like they had a good time…
Here is a show from Tour Manager Doug where Anthrax were most definitely NOT having as good of a time (get it? NOT). People who were at this show told me that a couple of band members came out in leopard print spandex/stretch pants and the spit started to fly. Man, the bay area did that “de-posering” of out of town bands a couple of times that I am aware of with Slayer’s “take off the makeup” show and this. Well done, guys.
I EQ’d this one as best as I could, but it sounds similar in quality to the exodus set. Regardless, I am still super grateful of Doug to tape these- I had only ever seen B&W photos of this show from Metal Mania.
