Blue Mountain- Live on NPR’s Mountain Stage Radio Show, W. Virginia 9/20/96 xfer f/cassette master

Here is a quick and early one for today’s On This Date in History. Most Mountain Stage recordings sound perfect, but Blue Mountain had a reputation for playing loud and the FM mix seems to suffer from it. After I got this one completely done, I noticed that I had another copy odf this on my list- a DAT clone. Whoops!
Lineage: Cassette Master-DAT-WAV.

The Dwarves- KALX Blag in studio DJ w/Jesse, Berkeley Ca 9/17/96 xfer f/Master audio Cassette

Over to Arica Pelino’s tape collection today for this one. Blag joins Jesse Luscious(Townley) for a guest DJ spot. I listened to about 5 minutes and heard 1 F-bomb dropped. Jesse sounds nervous about what Blag might say next.

Audio

The Smugglers- Concert Cafe, Green Bay Wi 9/17/96 xfer from master VHS tape enhanced

Here’s one from Jason Ross’ stack of VHS masters that did not seem to be online when I checked the other day. They must have played LOUD as most of Jason’s videos (even Guitar Wolf) sounded pretty good, but this one has some distortion. Picture quality is excellent.
If you haven’t read Grant Lawrence’s autobiography of the band called dirty windshields, you need to check it out. Very entertaining.

The Smugglers & The Queers- Chicago Filmmakers, Il 9/16/96 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Lookout Records

I pulled this DVD out for today’s On This Date in history and discovered that there are 2 sets from this night on the same disc. So I guess it’s an inadvertent 2 for Tuesday!

From Jason Ross’ collection

This looks like the Byrne brothers’ work but I am not sure. Looks and sounds pretty good. Steady camera work. Well done!

Lush- Fillmore, San Francisco 9/7/96 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Shoegaze Miki Berenyi

I have been digging around in the VHS collections for some tapes for friends, and I keep coming across really cool stuff. I pulled some and put a pile aside and I am digitizing them as I get time, so expect some really nice OLD videos that are not circulated.. or at least not in this quality.
This one comes from Gary Shurtleff’s collection. I was never a “hide your camera from security and film the concert” kind of guy. People like Gary, Joe Burns and others turned this into an art form, getting some amazing results without anyone knowing except for them and a lookout.

Pinhead Gunpowder- KALX live in studio, Berkeley Ca 9/3/96 xfer from master audio cassette PGHP

Here’s one from Arica Pelino’s tape collection today. I was searching online for an image for today’s post, and I came across someone who had already posted this on youtube. It is 3 or 4 minutes shorter than this one, and people are complaining about the quality/issues with the tape in comments. As I have said before, people don’t understand the struggle with analog gear back in the 80s/90s. It was bulky and problematic- tape decks would wear out and screw up tapes. I wish those commenters were trying to tape stuff back then, lol.
