All- Graystone, Detroit 8/6/88 xfer from master beta tape improved re-transfer Descendents

Here is the bonus for you, to make up for that silent footage of the obscure band. I had posted this one a couple years back, but I had access to one of the nicest Beta VCRs available, so I did a proper re-transfer. No more annoying horizontal white lines!

Doughboys- Graystone, Detroit Mi 8/6/88 xfer from master beta tape improved re-transfer punk

I didn’t get the OK to post the other video I had planned for today, and Dean Crist asked for the Doughboys set after I posted All yesterday, so here it is. They were such a great band, it’s too bad that they didn’t seem to get the acclaim that many of their peers did.

Country Bob and the Blood Farmers- Graystone, Detroit Mi 2/8/87 xfer from master beta tape NO AUDIO Russ Gibb Archive Punk SILENT

Since everyone seemed to either be watching the Back the the Beginning live stream or talking about the concert, I decided to hold off posting until it was over. Then I fell asleep. It was a rough night with my 9 month old pup- I got maybe 5 hours sleep.
I bought this off Ebay from the guys who are selling items from Russ Gibb’s estate. There were a ton of really cool beta master tapes. I saw The Bats on this tape and figured that this was probably the New Zealand band since they released their first album around this time… turns out it wasn’t them. Detroit had a punk band called Bats who put out a 4 song demo in 1986.. and the logo on the bass drum matches the logo on the demo.. No band member info anywhere.
This was also on the tape. I tried to look up CBBF and there is nothing on discogs or google or newspapers dot com. If you have any info on this band, please let me know.
The worst part about all of this is the tape has no audio. I even tried to normalize it to see if there is a tiny signal I could work with.. nope. Enjoy the silent footage.

Here is one that may not get much interest. I will add a bonus post after this of something people will actually want to see and hear!

Guilty Bystanders- Graystone Ballroom?, Detroit Mi. 2/7/87 xfer from Russ Gibb Beta Tape Flint Punk

As promised, I am going to attempt to post something from each of the 20 collections I have over here somewhat regularly. It has been a long time since I posted anything from Russ Gibb’s tapes. I was able to get my hands on a nice beta VCR for a short amount of time and get clean transfers of all of the Russ tapes I have. No more white vertical lines!
For those who need a Russ refresher (wikipedia): Russel James Gibb (June 15, 1931 – April 30, 2019) was an American rock concert promoter, school teacher and disc jockey from Dearborn, Michigan, best known for his role in the “Paul is dead” phenomenon, a story he broke on radio station WKNR-FM in Dearborn, and as the owner of the Grande Ballroom, a major rock music venue in Detroit. (me) He was also a teacher at Dearborn High School who filmed a lot of small/unknown bands in the midwest. So humbled to have a good amount of his tapes here.
Anyway, Guilty Bystanders were a punk band from Flint, Mi. They put out 1 self/independently released CD. The photo used for the facebook post has more info about the many members that were in the band.

Son of Sam- Graystone, Detroit Mi 1/1/87 xfer from master beta tape Enhanced Russ Gibb Archive Punk

It’s Friday, so you get a video. This one is from the tapes I bought from Russ Gibb’s estate. Man, there is not much on this band out there. Discogs has a number of self and independent released things by the band, but not much else. According to discogs, most members never did anything outside of this band. Here is the amazing description there: “American punk rock band from Detroit, Michigan that was active 1981-1991.”. Thanks.
Pretty standard 3 chord, screaming punk. I like how the band’s large banner is put up halfway through the set, while the band is playing.

Groupoem- Graystone, Detroit Mi. 1/1/87 xfer from Beta master tape Russ Gibb Archive Lost Media

There is absolutely nothing about this band online- nothing on discogs, nothing through the usual internet searches. They played this show with Gore and Country Bob and the bloodfarmers, so I assume they were local. If anyone has anything on the band, please let me know!

Update: Thanks to youtube commenter “chebag”, we now know that they were called Groupoem and had 2 self releases- one CD and one 12″- both from Canada, so I assume they are from Canada as well.

Country Bob and the Bloodfarmers- Graystone, Detroit Mi 1/1/87 xfer f/ master beta Cowpunk Russ Gibb

It seems that this band is somewhat legendary. There is a really good extensive interview/article on Dangerous Minds from about 10 years ago, which has some album tracks and a 6 minute video embedded. There are plenty of short videos of the band on youtube, but only one other complete set. So this seems pretty unique.
It looks like this is one angle of a multicamera shoot that has never seen the light of day. The 6 minute live (multicam) clip and the only other complete show seem to be from the same concert at Graystone, and it’s not this one.
I’ll link the dangerous minds article in the facebook comments, it’s a good one.

Just Born- Graystone Hall, Detroit Mi. 10/10/86 xfer f/Russ Gibb beta master Punk R.I.P. Tony Romeo

News came out today of Tony Romeo’s passing. Tony was in a bunch of bands including Easy Action, Trash Bats and this band. Just Born released a 7″ in 1986 and a cassette EP in 1995.

Unfortunately, the audio is not too good on this one. There is a low hum through most of the show, but not all of it. I tried to de-hum the audio in Izotope and it killed all the low end. I just kept the audio as-is. Sorry about that. Not much bass either way.

It looks like I might have 2 different angles of this show. If anyone has skill with video time/frame alignment, please reach out. We might be able to edit together a multicamera video.

Inside Out- Graystone, Detroit Mi 9/13/86 re-xfer from master beta tape Enhanced Russ Gibb Archive

Sorry for all the posts today- kind of a long story. That last one (Beatles) from Todd Nakamine’s collection was blocked worldwide, so I deleted it and will try another one of Todd’s later this evening.

This is one of Russ Gibb’s beta tapes that I transferred back in 2022, but since then I was able to use some better equipment to re-transfer so here you go. No more horizontal white lines across the screen! This is not the Zack Delarocha fronted hardcore band. Here is more info, courtesy of discogs:

“Inside Out (Detroit USA) are an all-female power trio who formed in 1985, and specialised in a brand of hardcore punk / grunge / psychedelia in the vein of female grunge bands such as Babes in Toyland and L7. They released a number of singles in the period 1990 – 93, along with 2 LPs. The singles were on Meantime Records, Icon Records and Anti-Music Records. The LPs were both released by Meantime Records. The band also recorded a Peel Session for Radio 1 DJ John Peel.”

It would be cool to hear that peel session.
