Various- Chatterbox bands comp, San Francisco Compiled in 2014 Jackson Saints R.K.L. NOFX Dwarves

It’s a late audio post today, from Alfie Kulzick’s collection. This one is a compilation that was put together in 2014, 24 years after the club closed. It looks like 7 of these tracks were previously released, but some of them do not sound like the album versions to my ears.

Huge thanks to Alfie for this one- this was the only thing that I had to listen to in the car after I had my phone stolen at a Blood for Blood show in Berkeley back in April. I was stressing and this was like a life preserver.

Short Dogs Grow- The Chatterbox, San Francisco Ca. 7/7/89 xfer from master!

I became facebook friends with a guy named Tom Pitts today. He is an author, but back in the 80s, he was the singer and guitarist in one of the best bands in the bay area- Short Dogs Grow. I loved SDG through their progression from punk band to more of a rock n roll band. This is from the later era of the band- they open with a Boston cover(!) and finish it up with a Poison cover. Classic! This was the only time I ever went to the Chatterbox. I wish I went more often, but it was hard to know when shows were happening back in the 80s./

NOFX- Chatterbox, San Francisco 3/11/89 xfer f/1st gen DVCAM tape Fat Mike Wreck Chords full show

HUGE thanks to Alfie Kulzick for sending this DVCAM tape to me. Even though the DVCAM tape appears to be transferred from the master tape in super slow speed, the quality is still pretty decent. The audio does suffer from dropouts, so I plan on playing around with the audio channel settings to see if I can make it any better.. but first priority was to get it transferred ASAP.

Some of the other bands on the tape suffer from tape damage- it seems that the damage was on the source tape and not the DVCAM. If you see any major glitches or dropouts on this transfer, please let me know. I did the ol’ ffwd/rew thing to try to ensure the tape was as good as it can be. The picture was super clean for a tape this old.

Alright, back over to VHS.

Stuntcock- Chatterbox, San Francisco Late 1980s Transfer from 1st gen DVCAM Tape

I know I have heard about this band from friends but I can’t find anything online. Nothing. It looks like they were doing the Steel Panther type thing long before Steel Panther. Looks like the bass player was sporting the Hetfield fashion line, circa mid 80s here. Audio is a bit rough on this one. Sounds better than it did at transfer, believe it or not.

Papa Wheelie- Chatterbox, San Francisco 1988ish xfer f/1st gen DVCam Tape

It’s time for another archival Chatterbox video from Alfie Kulzick! It seems that this Short Dogs Grow/Papa Wheelie show had the audio mastered way too high. I will try to fix the SDG audio when I get a chance, but I did everything I could to keep this from distorting, and this is where it landed.

By the way, this is not the Jason Newsted band. This is a bay area band that existed 10 years before the discogs/newsted band/version did. They played all the time back in the late 80s.

Jackson Saints- The Chatterbox San Francisco Late 1980s transfer 1st gen DVcam tape Soundboard Audio

This Jackson Saints set may not be the best quality, but it is an absolute scorcher of a set. Does anyone know why they came on stage, proceeded to rip it up for about 10 minutes, get off stage, then some of the band comes back for a cover of Neil Young’s “Birds”… and that’s it? Talk about leaving the audience wanting more. Damn.

Witnesses?- The Chatterbox, San Francisco Ca late 1980s Transfer from 1st Gen DVCam tape Garage Rock

This one might be from the same night as that Jackson Saints video (w/ soundboard audio) that I posted a couple weeks back. It is right next to it on the tape. Once again, it seems to be a partial set or the encore only.

I am not sure if this is The Witnesses. The tape is marked as if The Witnesses are the first band on here, but according to their discogs page, the guitarist Dave Dick also took care of vocal duties. If this is the wrong band, please correct me. Thanks

Osgood Slaughter- Chatterbox, San Francisco Ca late 1980s transfer from 1st gen DVCam tape Eugene Or

Finally, here is one from Alfie’s collection. I am a few days late on this because I kept forgetting cables and little crap that I needed to do DVcam transfers. Having stuff spread across 2 houses is no fun. What is fun is a working capture PC that doesn’t throw everything out of sync!

Anyway, Osgood Slaughter is a band from Eugene Or who put out a couple self-released things in the late 80s/early 90s. They were clearly popular with the Chatterbox crowd

Stevie Stiletto- Chatterbox, San Francisco Ca 1988 xfer f/1st gen DVCam tape

Here’s the last video that I have for now from Alfie Kulzick. I hope there are more tapes to come- restoring these old Chatterbox tapes has been a lot of fun!
This one had the lowest lighting of them all, but it sounded better than most of the others. It was SUPER red so I had to play around with the color which affects the lighting. After playing with color, brightness, exposure, etc.. I think this is as good as it’s gonna get.

Short Dogs Grow- The Chatterbox, San Francisco Ca. 1988 xfer f/1st gen DVCam Tape

Along with those demo CD’s (one of which I posted last week), Alfie also sent over some more Chatterbox DVCam tapes. The first 2 on this tape were really dark, but I was able to fix it at the source since virtualdub allows for brightness/contrast etc adjustments. The audio is a bit rough but it doesn’t really matter. This was clearly a PARTY. I let it run after the end of the set because George was goofing around on the drums (R.I.P.). The lead vocalist of Papa Wheelie also hops on stage after the set and seems to try to kick someone. Wild party.

And Tom, I had better see some of those dance moves (1:26) at the next SDG show!
