Beth Orton- KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca. 5/30/97 xfer from master tape f/label

I don’t think labels do this much (if at all) anymore, but back in the 80s/90s, they would give out tapes of special performances from the vaults. I have a bunch of them from Elektra with Old 97s demos along with other bands. It was a cool treat.
This one is from Eddie Jorgensen’s collection. Beth Orton’s performance from MBE back in 1997. I checked youtube and it has not been posted there, which makes me wonder how many of those tapes were given out.
Speaking of KCRW MBE, I have a TON of performances on DAT that I need to get on my PC and posted one day. Most of them are likely uncirculated. When I lived in L.A., my friend Kevin Haynes would tape the sessions off the radio (he was closer to santa monica than I was) and I would clone the DAT. I really need to free up more time to post more of this stuff.

Robyn Hitchcock and Tim Keegan- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca 5/28/97 xfer from WB Cassette

I used to love getting these cassette copies from WB’s and Elektra’s archives. Thanks to the unnamed A&R guys for sending them my way. Let’s do one of them for today’s On This Date in History.

Robyn & Tim toured (at least through Calfornia), as I taped his show at Melarkey’s in Sac around this time. Actually, I think I secured permission, then left and my friend Jim Hoffman actually taped it. I have a funny story around that one once it gets posted.

I really enjoy listening to Tricia Halloran’s interviews with artists. The conversations seem to flow naturally.

Foo Fighters- Apollo, Manchester England 5/25/97 xfer from master FM cassette Complete Full Show

Since the Foo Fighters are so popular for firing Josh Freese, I figured I would post something from them for On This Date in History /s. My favorite Josh Freese recording is that Cali Giraffes album that he did with Kim Warnick of the Fastbacks. Great stuff.

This tape is another one of those “Why isn’t this online somewhere yet” deals. What the heck?

This tape is another mystery. I really should have kept better notes when getting these 25+ years ago. First of all, this is a very late cassette trade, so the person I got it from must have had damned good stuff. I became a DAT snob around this time and quit trading on cassette with only a few exceptions. Pissed a lot of my old trading friends off. Sorry.

Second, this is a master cassette. Someone taped this off of the BBC for me and mailed me the tape from England. The tape is even an odd type of TDK I have never seen before. My tape list says “thanks Michael” for the tape, but the only 2 Michaels that I remember trading with at the time were Michael Siou and Michael Pemberton… and they both were in the US and were on DAT at that point.
If you are the Michael who taped this and sent it to me, please remind me.

The Jayhawks- Riviera Thtr, Chicago Il 5/23/97 Lossless xfer f/Hi8 master tape Americana Alt country

It’s Friday, so that means video from one of the many collections over here. It is Neil Werries’ turn for a post today. Coincidentally, I happened to be burning a bunch of lossless transfers of his to disc, and I realized that this show had not been posted yet.
For those with skillz- there are 2 angles of this show, but we need help with time alignment for editing. If this is something that you are able to do and you are willing to help, please reach out at shaynestacy@hotmail.com thanks.

Built to Spill- Black Cat, Washington DC 5/17/97 xfer f/ DAT clone rebalanced complete show 3 piece

Aw man, I kinda blew it with today’s On This Date in History. I always try to post unique content daily. This one was uploaded to Internet Archive and I did not check. There are 2 things that DO make this version unique: This is from a 48khz DAT clone (not a CDR rip like the internet archive one) and the drums were way too high in the mix, so I rebalanced this in Izotope. Enjoy!

Son Volt: Thunderbird Theatre, Urbana Il 5/3/97 xfer from Hi8 Master Videotape Enhanced Uncle Tupelo

We have a new contributor to the Sac Music Archive- Neil Werries contacted me a couple of weeks ago. He filmed a bunch of great alt.country bands in the late 90s so expect a bunch of really great stuff over the next few months. He was also in an alt.country band called Elsah and you’ll be seeing them too down the road.
The reason why I picked this one to post first is due to the scarcity of Son Volt videos from the Straightaways tour. I know of only one, with very shaky camera work and distorted audio… so this is probably the best Son Volt 97 vid surfaced to date. Sounds pretty decent for stock camcorder audio too. Thanks, Neil!

Magnificent Seven- KCRW’s MBE 5/2/97 xfer f/WB Promo Tape Tuatara Minus Five Mark Eitzel Peter Buck

Here’s a pretty special performance that has been sitting on the RAID for a couple years. The Magnificent Seven were a one-off (or maybe a short lived All-Star band) made up of Tuatara, The Minus Five, and Mark Eitzel’s band.
