Son Volt- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca. 9/21/23 Schoeps Audience Master full Trace album

I am not usually speedy in posting recent shows- I am still working on video from March of this year… but this show was so good and this is one of the best sounding recordings that these new (to me) schoeps mics have produced.
My good friend Anonymous also recorded the show and was in a better spot for recording, so there is probably an even better recording- I had a busy night so I slid in about 10 minutes before Son Volt started.
The Doug Sahm songs were excellent – I bought the album but have not had a chance to listen to it, but Mark Spencer’s Augie Myers parts were spot-on. Nice!
Unexpected highlight for me was “Too Early”. Man, it had been a LONG time since I heard that song and I forgot how much I loved it.

Bulldozer- Starlet Room, Sacramento 9/19/23 4K UHD Multicam w/ Schoeps Day of Wrath show Italy Metal

I still can’t believe that Bulldozer came though sac to celebrate 40 years of their Day of Wrath album. This video is decent but the gopro quality suffered as a result of the red lighting.
After the set, I went to the stage to break down my cameras and one was missing. King from Deceased told me “some fat dude fell on top of it- it’s probably around here somewhere”. He was right, it was lying at the back of the stage and the stand was totally wasted. That makes 2 stands that bit the dust in the past couple months.
That means that you get 3 cameras for about the first 40min of the show, then 2 cameras for the rest. Oh well, the drummer is so animated that it is still pretty entertaining.

Deceased- Starlet Room, Sacramento Ca. 9/19/23 4K UHD Multicam Death Metal

Friday is video day and this show was really something. I went to see Bulldozer because I could not believe they were playing a tiny place in Sac, but this band absolutely RIPPED. I know they have been around for 30 years and they were the first band ever signed to Relapse Records, but they were new to me… and their vocalist is friends with at least one of my old friend/tape traders from the 80s.
This should have been a 4 or 5 camera thing, but I forgot one gopro stand at home and I am still not comfortable mounting a camera to that very wide post at starlet. Grr.
After the set, I immediately went back to the merch table and bought some CD’s. This band rips.

Ares Kingdom- Starlet Room, Sacramento 9/19/23 4K UHD w/Schoeps Audio Thrash Death Metal Kansas City

Last month, we had a KILLER package tour come through Sac. It was Demiser, these guys, Deceased and Italy’s Bulldozer. I came in during Demiser and they were amazing- it bummed me out to miss the full set.
Deceased melted my face off and I will get the multicam of that one done asap, along with the Bulldozer set.
Ares Kingdom has a bunch of releases out on the killer “nuclear war now” label- I have some of their Witchfinder General releases. I think they were missing a guitar player for this show.

All Girl Summer Fun Band- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 9/8/23 4K UHD Multicam with Schoeps Audio

This was probably the most anticipated show of the year for me. I have been a huge fan of the band ever since I learned of their existence back in mid-2000s. I heard that Kathy from The Thermals had a side project and picked up “2” and went from there.
This one took a while to prep because I had so much trouble with the sound at the show. Kathy’s drums are pretty loud so Jen & Kim needed to turn up to be heard… which then overpowered the PA. Vocals were completely buried and drums were still too loud- I was able to EQ the schoeps recording and then Izotope Rx8 it to bring some vocals up. That’s the best I could do.
It was still a great show. I was a total dork and asked Jen to spell her last name about 3 times after the show. She probably doesn’t get many interactions like that anymore. Haha, sorry.
Thanks to the band for coming to town, thanks to phono and the promoter (Ilene) for making it happen. I really appreciate it.

Rose Melberg- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 9/8/23 Schoeps Audience Master Audio Tiger Trap Softies

I was very excited to see this show- I have been a huge AGSFB fan for over 10 years, and adding Rose to the show was a big bonus…. unfortunately, some things didn’t work out too well with the taping thing.
First one was this set. I rarely have enough time to be 100% prepared for a show. It takes a lot of time charging battery packs and prepping memory cards for 4-6 cameras, plus prepping the audio gear. I thought I had it all dialed in.. right before I left, I checked the audio recorder and it showed 8:12- 8 hours and 12 min! Plenty of memory for the show. Well, that was actually 8 minutes and 12 seconds left on the recorder.
After (so I thought) recording the opener, I checked my recorder and it shut off. This was minutes before Rose was going to start, then I realized that the recorder’s memory was full. So I panic and start deleting files as fast as I can (including the opener! D’oh!). As a result, I missed the first 10min of the set or so. Ugh, I hate taping chaos.
Also, the PA did not seem to be working on the left side, which is where I should have been getting most of my vocals.. so although the recording sounds nice, the vocals are oddly distant.
Oh well, there are days like these. I don’t even know if I am going to post the AGSFB set- I need to figure out how to make it listenable.

Kelly Slusher- Fig Tree, Roseville Ca 9/1/23 Digital audio master w/ Schoeps Mics Crash and Britany

Well the theme so far this week is “women who used to be in well-known bands playing a rare solo set” apparently. That will change tomorrow, but let’s roll with it for now.
I rarely take my kids to a live performance because they are not interested and it becomes a distraction, but it was my birthday the day before and we were going to my birthday dinner in Roseville. It’s the one time per year where I actually get my way, so off we went. Of course, we got there late because the 8 year old was slow getting out the door, but we made it. If you want to hear (and see) the entire set, it is on fig tree’s facebook. This one sounds better.
Kelly worked for 3 years on animation that accompanied the songs, and it was really entertaining. The Fig Tree is a comfortable hangout- I don’t think I have ever taped while lounging on a couch. Highly recommended.
Kids were entertained too- they had board games there. So 2 thumbs up for Fig Tree.
