Still Life- Wilmar Center, Madison Wi 7/30/94 xfer f/master VHS tape enhanced Green Bay Punk

Here’s a Jason Ross master VHS tape that was a bit of a challenge. The show was poorly lit so the source video was very dark. I brightened it in Elements and when I tried to denoise, it would not work… because that grainy pattern you see may not be video noise. This pattern stays static on the screen which I have never seen before. Odd.

Anyway, here it is. Too bad these were not digitized before that Green Pay punk documentary was done.

Jara- Wilmar Center, Madison Wi 7/30/94 xfer f/master VHS tape enhanced

I made the big announcement about today being a double- Jason Ross day and then I forget to post his video. Whoops!
This is from the same show as Still Life that I posted a couple weeks back. I figured that Jara was also a Wisconsin band, but I cannot find anything about them. I guess they might be the Jara on discogs, which is an “American emo-hardcore band from Goleta, California.”. They have the same config and the guitarist has long hair.. so maybe…

None Left Standing- Wil-mar Center, Madison Wi. 7/30/94 xfer from Master VHS Tape The Promise Ring

Man, we have been hitting Jason Ross’ collection A LOT for these On This Date in History posts. Things must get busy with shows in the summer in the northern midwest part of the USA, because there are a lot of shows he filmed during this time.
This is another one that will benefit from a lossless transfer and brightening/denoise on day. I’ll get to it eventually.
Guitarist Jason Gnewikow went on to form The Promise Ring.

Sea Pigs, Misery’s Echo- The Cosmos, Roseville Ca. 7/30/94

(from Mark Murray): Summer 1994. The City of Roseville used to let us do shows at the Cosmos (the big, red sculpture thing off I-80, near the N. Sunrise Home Depot). They were always jam-packed with a lot of great bands. This video captures the tail end of the Sea Pigs’ set and all of Misery’s Echo. Misery’s Echo consisted of Twig (Kill the Precedent, Diseptikons, Fatso, Spinach), Tim (Second Coming, Fatso, Spinach), and Dave (Koi).

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS – Arco Arena, Sacramento, CA 7-24-94 full show

RIP Scott Weiland. Too bad the drugs were stronger than you, as you had talent my man. This was my 2nd time seeing/filming the Pilots. Light show was cool, though the strobes fucked with my focus throughout the gig. Apologies for that, but the feeling of the show is captured beautifully from start to finish. Scott was a dancing madman. Enjoy!

Stone Temple Pilots- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca. 7/24/94 xfer from 8mm master tape enhanced

Here’s another gift from Gary (Shurtleff, “Bootleg Cowboys” youtube channel)- he filmed STP at Arco back in 1993. He has this posted on his channel, but this is a fresh transfer with better audio levels, transfer with a digital output, and some denoise work done in Adobe Premiere Elements. Thanks to Gary for giving the OK to post these!

Metallica- Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento Ca. 7/23/94 xfer from master tape enhanced live

Tonight, Metallica is playing an outdoor show in Sacramento for the first time in over 20 years. It looks like they last played the Cal Expo Amphitheater (during the state fair!) in 1998. This one is from the tour prior to that one- the 1994 tour that came through in the summer of that year.
A huge thanks goes out to Gary Shurtleff (fromthenosebleeds yt channel) for bringing his master tape over last weekend for me to transfer, and for giving the OK to post this one. I see that “metconcerts100” has this posted, but it isn’t from the master tape.
Anyway, I hope everyone has fun at the show tonight- be prepared to walk about 5 miles. I’ll be the guy with longish hair and a 924 gilman hoodie on. Come say hi! If you aren’t going, watch this and imagine being there tonight. Haha.

Luna- The Roxy, Hollywood Ca 7/14/94 xfer from DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM-300 Galaxie 500

Today was one of the busiest days I have had in months. I am finally getting the On This Date in History post out late.
This one has a story. I videotaped a few early Luna shows. Looks like 3 of them in 1992 and 2 in 1994. Well, it SHOULD have been 3 in 1994…
I get to the club with my video bag and let them know that I have permission from Luna to video the show. Guys at the door sneered at me, then proceed to tell me that they don’t care what the band says. You are not bringing that camera in. So I had to put my $900 (1992$) camera back in the car and hope it was there when I got back.
As a grand F*ck You to the bouncers, I snuck my DAT and a Nakamichi CM300 mic in anyway and audio taped the show. Because that was bullshit.
Recording sounds great, but there was no bass and very low vocals. I fixed it up in Izotope Rx8 so you can actually hear Dean and Justin.
Cuts in on the first song. I had some mic issues

Prong- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca 7/14/94 xfer from 8mm master tape Enhanced

Prong’s opening set for Sepultura and Pantera was LOUD- you can tell how close they are to overdriving Arco’s sound system. It’s good that Gary (fromthenosebleeds on YT) had specialized mics for volume, otherwise this would be an unlistenable mess.
Don’t let the thumbnail fool you- there are nice closeups throughout the video.
