Ivy Jeanne/Pretty Face- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 12/18/93 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette

It’s been a while since we shared something from Eggplant’s tape collection, so might as well do one today.
Audience participation time- Here are 8 minutes of mystery recordings. This was at the end of that long Fifteen show I posted a few weeks back, and this show took place the day after Fifteen. The first 2 songs are a woman singing acapella – is this Ivy? Ivy who? No idea. Then the next 2 songs is a full band playing indie rock. I wondered if this could be the well-known Ivy with Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), but I doubt that. They were from New York and their recorded output is WAY more polished than this. It could be them, I guess. None of the songs seem to align with Ivy’s early releases. I also searched for “pretty face indie band” and nothin’.
Anyway, enough musing about what the hell these are- if you know, please comment or send a message. Thanks!

THANKS to Corbett Redford for the help: “This is not Ivy from the Karnivores. The first singer sounds Ivy Jeanne from Miami, Black Rainbow, and Los Canadians.”

Now, someone help me with pretty face. Who are they?

Fifteen- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 12/17/93 xfer f/1st gen soundboard cassette rebalanced Crimpshrine

It’s Eggplant Monday and boy is this a nice one. I have so many questions- why did they play so long? Was this a normal set length for the band? I don’t know if I have ever seen an 85 minute set at Gilman. And, why are there no Gilman flyers for any shows after 1990? I checked all the usual places- nothin’
The mix and clarity on this one was excellent, but the vocals were buried just a few minutes into the show. Izotope did remarkably well in bringing them up in the mix without sounding odd and processed.

Rebalance in Izotope Rx8- Vocals +7(!)

Hm. Listening to it again, it almost sounds like the first 35min is one show/set, and the last 50 is another.

RKL- Secret Studios Music Annex Demos, San Francisco Ca 12/14/93 f/Band Archive DAT R.K.L. Rich Kids

Post from Barry Ward’s amazing collection today. It looks like Secret Studios was primarily a rehearsal spot, but RKL apparently did some demos there back in the 90s.

I had guessed 1994 for the date on this session, but the actual tape had 12/14/93. They kicked all of this out in a day! Wow.

I could probably rebalance this, but I like keeping this one as recorded. It’s clearly a rehearsal demo.

Cracker- KROQ Loveline, Pasadena Ca 12/12/93 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette David Lowery

BONUS POST today. That’s right- you get an On This Date, this one, and a 3rd one! Don’t get too excited, the 3rd one sounds kinda terrible.

Anyway, for the Cracker fans unaware of the show- Loveline was a show on KROQ where listeners would call up with the “love” problems. Dr Drew Pinsky plus whatever DJ at the time (this one is Riki Rachtman), AND the guest(s) would try to help with advice. David and Johnny were in the studio for this one. Loveline was on the air from 1983-2025, but I am most familiar with the 90s crew since I lived down there at the time.

This was right after the KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas show- the show ended probably an hour before this started. In fact, I should probably check my DAT of AAC to see if I inadvertently recorded some of this and never knew.

Blind Melon- KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, Universal Amphitheater L.A. 12/12/93 DAT master xfer

This one is hard to listen to. During the interview before their performance, shannon sang an xmas song but changed the lyrics to be a “funny” drug/heroin based song. Less than 2 years later, he was dead of an OD.

Over the next few weeks (weekdays), I will be posting sets from the 1993 Almost Acoustic Xmas. On the night of Dec 11th, I was driving to grab dinner for the family and I turn on KROQ and I hear that they were broadcasting the entire show live on the radio! I listened to KROQ regularly back then and did not recall any advertising for the broadcast. I hauled ass back home and grabbed a DAT and started recording. I was broke back then, so I have these sets scattered over about 5 DATs. I think I only lost a couple minutes of one set due to tape change- General Public. I even was able to edit in the interviews from other sections of the tape. The Blind Melon interview is a sad foreshadow of their future.
Anyway, hope you enjoy these. I became a fan of at least a few of these bands through this broadcast.

Odd, I just realized that there is no Smashing Pumpkins on the Sacramento music archive. I taped their 1994 Lollapalooza set and this one.

Happy Monday again! Mondays are different when you don’t work- they are actually pleasant! We are winding down the 1993 KROQ Xmas posts- this will be the last week of my abusing you with 90s alternative.. for now.

Rage Against the Machine- KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas, Universal Amp L.A. 12/12/93 DAT Master Live

Happy Friday! I know what you are thinking- it’s Friday, and I really want to hear something different. Well, here you go. Either RATM thought it was a good idea to play acoustic/with no distortion, or KROQ screwed up the mix… or Tom Morello forgot his distortion pedals. Regardless, this seems like a pretty unique set. Enjoy. Youtube’s copyright algorithm didn’t even pick this up as RATM! Haha. They get away with an uncensored “bullsh*t” at 5:30.
