Here at long last is the Scowl edit from last October. We could not get the audio to synch with one of the GH5s angles and were ready to give up on the project, but our friend Derek Purtell was able to make it work. Thanks Derek! Gopros got knocked around but a couple of stage anfgles were good enough to use still.

Wow, it’s 10pm and I almost missed the daily post. One of the more physically demanding days I have had in a while. My good friend Age asked me to film these guys if I was able to get to the Scowl/Militarie Gun show early enough. I guess you could say that I got it done halfway. The GH5S ladder angle is too tight (same angle as Militarie Gun) and I could not get my act together on my monopod angle until about 8 minutes in. That has to be a new record of me not being able to get my sh*t together. Thankfully, Otto’s multitrack sounds great so you can at least listen to it and be entertained. I really liked the band- I am a sucker for those chorusy distorted guitars, man.

Happy Friday everyone- it’s time for a few videos over the weekend. It’s time to fall back in the US, so set your clocks back tomorrow night- you can use that extra hour watching stuff. I went to Gilman for the first time in 10 months to see this show. It was nice to see so many people there. I worry abut the long term longevity of the place, but it is doing well for now. Yay. Huge thanks to Tromster(as usual) for the edit, and someone new helped out with this one- Otto Freeman ran sound that night, mixed it down, and sent it over about a day after the show. Superhuman soundperson! Thanks. I filmed this band at Tromster’s request but ended up really enjoying the set. I would go out of my way to see them again- great stuff! Unfortunately, one camera was knocked out before the set started, another one had too tight of a shot and cut off one guitar player, and the drum gopro is a bit low… but it edited together nicely.

Here is another set from the Phace/Addams wedding, filmed with the old HFM30 on the over-door bracket. Came out remarkably well- I was not expecting it to sound this good! I think that is the groom (Tree) on the bass on the left there.

A couple months back, I was honored to be asked to video the wedding between Lis Phace and Tree Adams at the Cafe Colonial. After the wedding, they hosted a nice show there with Tim Williamson, Tree and others. I had a conflict for the show, but I still wanted to video the show for them… so I took my original Canon HFM30 camcorder (the one I shot Riot Fest in 2013, Orion fest in 2012 and a bunch of other stuff) and mounted to the bracket above the entrance to the club. It didn’t turn out too bad- audio is nice and I was able to fix up the video quality. I wanted to be sure to post this today, since Tim Williamson is playing a set tonight at the Cafe. He’s really great (watch/listen) and you should head on over there. I think Tree (the groom on this day) is opening the show tonight.

After attending/video’ing a lovely wedding last Sunday, I headed over to Chico to see Bad Religion. I know I totally bagged on this venue back in March and proclaimed that I will NEVER return, but I figured that I could get my camera in to this show vs. the Fox in Oakland… and I was right. And the sound wasn’t that bad this time! The show was packed- it must have been sold out or close to it. I realized that I was way too close to the stage when the show started, which is why you see a lot of obstructions. It gets a lot better later on- I was able to back up, and the venue floor slopes up! Perfect! The crowd was crazy- from Jay Bentley’s comments, it sounds like BR rarely comes to Chico and they were surprised at the enthusiasm. “Chico, who woulda thunk?”- Jay.

Wow, this one came out great and the band (and the crowd) was on fire. People were climbing the poles (thankfully not the one with the camera on it) and diving off into the crowd. Huge thanks to Tromster for the edit, and also to Tromster’s friend who did a blend of mics from each side of the stage. There was so much separation in the club, my schoeps only picked up the guitar player on the right and the Rode got the left guitar. Sounds great, and it would have sounded odd otherwise. thanks!

Wow, we got this one edited and posted in less than 3 weeks. That’s about as fast as we go over here. STYG came to town and celebrated the 20(ish) year anniversary of the Diamond album by playing it in its entirety. Goldfield is a great club for multicam video- they have poles for mounting, and lighting and sound are great. I wasn’t able to get a board feed in time despite my best efforts, but the Rode/Schoeps matrix sounds nice. This is the first 4k, 60fps multicam that we did. Continuing to make quality upgrades/enhancements.

Another “morning after the show” post. What a crazy night. People were climbing the poles in the club and jumping off into the crowd during Comeback Kid! Completely insane. This is the opening band, SpiritWorld. I was going to make a comment about a hardcore band wearing nudie suits (google it), but then I started looking deeper into the band and I realized that I BLEW IT by not video’ing them. The band’s vocalist is Stu Folsom, who was in a great LVHC band called… Folsom! They put a CD out a long time ago on Mikey Hood’s West Coast Worldwide label. So THAT’s why Mikey was hanging out with him after the set. Derp. Then I read an interview with him, and he has roots in hardcore but he is a big alt.country fan, and one of his favorite bands is The Old 97’s. A man with good taste- if he finds this website/channel, he can be endlessly entertained with all of the Old 97s/Uncle Tupelo/Slobberbone on here. Double Derp. Then he asked me if I video’d after the set. Nope. Triple Derp. But, hardcore played by guys in nudie suits. I have now seen it all.
