7 Seconds- Paper Tiger, San Antonio Tx. 9/2/22 4K UHD Gopro 9min Sample Circle Jerks tour

I am in Texas, filming every 7 Seconds show of the Circle Jerks/7 Seconds and Negative Approach tour there. I don’t usually put up show fragments, but I only have my work laptop so I can’t bring the entire angle together. Don’t have the tools. I saw that Kev did not live stream and this was the best crowd I had seen of the tour so far, so I figured I’d give a taste. I did 4 angles that will be edited together soon. Fwd to 4:50 to see the crowd go nuts during “Young ’til I die” and even 99 red baloons!
I also put it up because the Westin tried to argue with me about how internet works… so I clogged up their hotel internet with this 5gb file. Man, I hate bougie hotels. At least the bed was nice, I was exhausted.
Anyway, thanks to Kev and the band for always being so nice to me and my camera (s).. for over 30 years. Always being cool even when a lot of others weren’t.
Edits coming soon so subscribe if you want to see them.

7 Seconds- Paper Tiger, San Antonio Tx. 9/2/22 4K UHD Multicamera with soundboard audio

Here is the 2nd date of the Circle Jerks/7 Seconds/Negative Approach Texas tour. The first date was in Dallas- I was staying in a semi-crappy hotel north of Dallas by the airport and I worked until noon. Then, I had to make the ~300 mile drive south to San Antonio. It was the Friday before Labor Day weekend, so traffic was heavy. I had to take a bunch of country roads to make up time, but I drove straight to the club and walked in during 7 Seconds’ soundcheck.

I really liked the venue- the Paper Tiger is an industrial/warehouse looking place and they roll up the side doors so you can see the show from the outside patio. I probably should have filmed Negative Approach, but I was pretty fried from the drive. This was the smallest venue of the Texas run and the crowd was the most active and was singing along/moving constantly for 7 Seconds’ set.
The only downside is the audio- My DPA mics were so bassy/muddy that they were not much use, so I took the raw soundboard and tried to rebalance it.. but it has this odd high end flutter which bugs the hell out of me, but stick with it, you’ll get used to it.

Ned’s Atomic Dustbin- Indievision, San Antonio Tx 11/92 xfer f/Master VHS tape Community Cable

Good news and Bad news today over here at the archive. The bad news is that after extensive work on the video capture PC, it still won’t provide a clean capture. The good news is that I decided to go with the “screw it, let’s start over” option and build a new PC with a Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro 4K Capture/Playback Card. Might as well go for the best, right? Don’t feel bad for the old windows XP PC. It will live out its days as the audio only capture PC. Nice and easy.

Until the Blackmagic card shows up, you get a hodgepodge of stuff that has already been transferred.

This is from that tape that Craig Hilmer recorded off TV and then sent to me. I did Metallica, Luna/Babes in Toyland, and now this one from that tape. One more to go! Thanks Craig!

Metallica- Hemisfair Arena, San Antonio Tx 1/22/92 Xfer f/ VHS Master Rock the World Cable Broadcast

I wasn’t planning on posting this today- I was going to do a Four Eyes multicam from a recent show but I could not find it in my youtube drafts, so I filtered on them.. holy crap, there is some stuff that I meant to post a LONG time ago, including 1 last Tour Manager Doug tape! Expect some of that next week.

This one is from a VHS tape that my friend Craig Hilmer sent me over 30 years ago. He taped a few segments off of the local San Antonio community cable show back then and mailed them over. Even though it was broadcast on community cable, it seems that this one is not out there- at least not on youtube. Don’t get too excited- even though it sounds good, most of the video is shot off the video screen so quality ain’t great.

Stay tuned for more from this tape. There is even a cool segment with some local San Antonio bands from around that time.

Rock the World San Antonio Cable- Pitbull Daycare, Blues and more xfer f/low gen VHS tape

Another video collections post from my VHS tapes, by way of Craig Hilmer. This was the last segment on that San Antonio Cable tape. It might be a master, but it doesn’t look like a master. Must be Rock the World’s high production values, heh heh.

If anyone can help me make out the names of the blues performers, I would appreciate it!

Luna and Babes in Toyland- San Antonio Community Cable 1992 xfer f/master VHS tape Interview & Live

My video transfer setup is still giving me trouble, so let’s pull this one out for today. You should get a Chris Eng video tomorrow- and it is a rare one! I hope I can keep up with this “collections video every day” thing. Lossless capture has been finicky and it is time consuming when it goes well… I think it is time to stand up a 2nd lossless capture setup.

Craig Hilmer taped this off TV when he lived in San Antonio and mailed it to me back in 1992. Really neat interview and live footage. Are there any other video interviews of Luna from this time frame? I don’t recall seeing one.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Showcase Special Events Ctr, San Antonio Tx 3/10/89 xfer f/Master Audio Tape

As promised, here is a bonus 3rd post today, from Craig Hilmer’s collection. Thanks to Angelo Bertini for asking me to work it up for him.
Vocals were buried a bit. I ran an EQ job and a rebalance and it is pretty decent now, especially after the first couple songs. It kicks in at about 11 minutes.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Showcase Special Events Ctr, San Antonio Tx 3/10/89 xfer f/master audio tape

Here is a rarity for you, at least that’s what the hardcore RHCP completists are telling me. Craig Hilmer taped this one back in 1989 and gave it to me when we met up in SF last year. Thanks Craig!

Craig used an Aiwa deck but with a little EQ, this one turned out ok.

Los Lobos– Laurie Aud, Trinity University, San Antonio Tx 5/5/88 Spanish Tour f/1st gen audio Tape

NEW COLLECTION- last week, my old friend Craig Hilmer visited California from his home in Minnesota. We traded tapes in the 80s and 90s, and got to be pretty good friends. I even shipped out the Marantz PMD430 so he could record a concert that he promoted- Yo La Tengo at Beerland in Austin (he lived there at the time). It had been about 35 years since we hung out, so I made the 3 hour drive to SF. It was nice meeting his wife (Lori) and family friend.

The part that you might care about is that Craig brought a shopping bag full of his master recordings. He taped so many early alternative bands- the one pile I pulled so far has this, The Pogues, 4 R.E.M. shows, Lawrence McMurtry, and Camper Van Beethoven– all from 1988-1989. So this is going to be fun!

When I pulled this one to digitize, I figured it would be one of those echoey college auditorium types of things. Nope, this sounds fantastic! I didn’t need to do much of anything to make it sound better. I pushed the bass a little. That was it.

EDIT: D’oh! This is riddled with errors! Craig promoted a show with YLT at Tacoland in San Antonio, not Beerland in Austin. Also, this is one of 2 or 3 tapes that Craig sent that he did not tape. It was an acquaintance from San Antonio who used a Sony WMD6C.

Thanks Craig!

Watchtower- San Antonio, Tx February 1986 xfer f/ ? Gen VHS Tape Progressive Technical Thrash Metal

Here’s one that hardcore fans of this band will probably enjoy, and there seems to be quite a few fans out there.

This one comes from Chris Eng’s collection and it was on the same VHS tape as that Annihilation from Rock on Broadway that I posted last month. No idea where it came from.
