Circle Jerks- Granada Theater, Dallas Tx. 9/1/22 4K UHD Multicam with SB Matrix audio

Aw, I failed on my promise for an all-Jess video weekend. There is 1 more Slobberbone video that I shot that will be posted as soon as we get it finished up. Sorry.
Here is the only Circle Jerks video that I was able to shoot during my week-long tour of texas with them, 7 Seconds and Negative Approach. Huge thanks to Dmitri Coats for permission. As usual, things went wrong. The audio is not great- this is the same equipment that gave us the killer Mohawk Austin audio soundtrack, but this was an large older theater and the sound was decent in the room, but not great. Big thanks to Jim McLain for making it sound as good as possible.
Also, I did not realize that the drums were going to be wheeled closer to the front of the stage. I set up my gopro early and got out of there, then the drums moved. So, no gopro camera.
Overall, it still turned out pretty decent. Another huge thanks to Jack Pier- if it wasn’t for his angle on the balcony, we would have been toast. My tripod encountered a ton of vibration.

Negative Approach- Granada Theater, Dallas Tx. 9/1/22 4K UHD with SB Matrix audio full show

The first night of the 7 Seconds/Circle Jerks tour was a tough one to shoot. I mentioned on the Circle Jerks post that the venue was very old and the sound was not great- very boomy and the board mix was brickwalled.. nothing sounded good. Camera angles had vibration issues. Ugh.
So that’s why this Negative Approach is only 1 camera. Both balcony angles (Jack Pier’s and mine) suffered from vibration issues. The only one that was salvageable was my GH5S angle. So, if you wonder why I stay zoomed in on the drummer, or on John for too long, it was because this was supposed to be the closeup/isolation angle out of 3.

7 Seconds- Granada Theater, Dallas Tx. 9/1/22 4K UHD Multicam with SB Matrix audio

Aww, here is the very last video to post from that Texas tour in September. That was a lot of driving, but a lot of fun as well. I still have a few audio only recordings to share from that run, but this is it for video.
Like I mentioned before, this was a tough room- it was an old theater with pretty rough sound, plus the balcony vibrated so badly that one of my angles was useless. Huge thanks to Jack Pier for the camera help or I would have been toast. This one turned out a lot better than the Circle Jerks’ set, especially audio.

Slobberbone- Barley House, Dallas Tx 12/31/02 Set 1 DAT Master Soundboard Clone rebalanced R.I.P. Jess Barr

Jess Barr, Slobberbone guitarist, passed away Monday night at the age of 46. To say that this is devastating doesn’t seem to be enough.
I got to see Slobberbone play w/Jess 7 times from 2000-2003- in Berkeley, Sacramento and Chico. If they came within 2 hours of Sacramento, I was there. I even got to help bring them to Sacramento (thanks to Chalres Twilling) a couple of times. He was a force on the guitar and was a great showman- he even endured the beat to hell banjo that he would need to play every night.
After Jess left slobberbone, I did not hear much about him. I know that he opened up a bar and had a family, but not much more than that. It was comforting knowing that such a great talented guy seemed to be doing what he wanted, on his terms. It is such a shock to lose him so young.
I wanted to get a video ready today, but it isn’t cooperating so I’ll pull from the 71(!) live audio concerts I have. Let’s make this Jess week- I’ll post a week of slobberbone and Drams stuff in honor of the man.

Slobberbone- Barley House, Dallas Tx 12/31/02 Set 2 DAT Master Soundboard Clone rebalanced RIP Jess

In tape nerd circles, they sometimes do a thing called a flood, where people post a bunch of stuff by 1 artist in honor of them. I don’t have the bandwidth to do a flood, but it will be a more of a light shower, with (hopefully) more than 1 post per day. I’ll do as many as I can in this week.

Here is the late set of the show I posted yesterday. I had planned to post both of these together but the mix on this one changes so much that I could not use the same settings. The guitar gets REAL loud for the 2nd half of the set. I tried to adjust it so you could hear guitar for the 1st 25min but also hear anything other than guitar for the last 25.

Really cool set with a bunch of covers- I just randomly clicked in to make sure the upload worked and they were doing The Long Ryders’ “Looking for Lewis and Clark”. Wow.

Old 97s- KTCK-AM, Dallas Tx 6/27/00 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette 97’s alt.country

Here is a crazy one- Old 97s make an appearance on a sports talk radio station. The radio hosts clearly are not accustomed to hosting musicians, or maybe their demeanor is always this abrasive.. but it is an entertaining listen.
Interview and 3 songs in studio: Lonely Holiday, Jagged and Crash on the Barrelhead.

Centro-Matic: Good Records, Dallas Tx 3/31/00 xfer from early internet download-CDR Live in-store

Since a lot of my time and the audio capture PC is taken with the reel to reel captures, it is all video or CDR for the On This Date in History.. not that I am complaining, this one is great!

Speaking of the reels, what a goddamn pain in the ass these are. They are ancient and all gummed up, so I need to “help” the Otari mx-5050 rewind them by manually spinning the reels with my finger while it unit struggles. So, I guess these upcoming posts will be hand-pulled artisan reels. The squealing of the reels behind me during playback is driving me kinda nuts right now.
Today’s post is from a CDR that someone burned for me 25 years ago- it says “CDR download from web”, as it was a novelty to get your live shows in this way at the time. Great performance from Will and Scott at this in-store.
On a more serious note, we received news of Christopher Todd Penn from Good Records suffering a catastrophic fall at the store that has left him paralyzed and in ICU. I will post his gofundme below today’s audio post.

Murry Hammond- KNON, Dallas Tx 6/00 Interview and Live in Studio xfer from 1st gen cassette Old 97’s

Sorry for the late post. Given the storm and its aftermath, I am pretty sure that nobody in Sac was missing the post for today anyway. Since it is so late, you get a short audio post. Murry is the secret weapon of the Old 97’s. Looking forward to seeing them in a few months in Chico and Roseville.
I have another really cool Murry related post ready, but I wanted to ask him if it is was ok to post… and I can’t find his email. Murry, please message/email me if you see this- thanks!

I tried de-static’ing in Izotope and it made it sound weird.

Doug Sahm and the Last texas Blues Band- Gypsy Tea Room, Dallas Tx 5/9/98 Sahm Family Archive CDR

In 2016 or so, I was helping Shandon Sahm downsize his collection as he prepared to move to Denmark. I bought some posters and some other stuff, and he told me that he would throw some rare CD’s in the package. This is one of those CD’s.

After digging into it a bit, it looks like this was released as a bootleg CD a while back. I don’t know if this is better quality than the boot as I don’t do bootlegs. It’s a really cool show with a 13th Floor Elevators cover. Thanks Shandon!

Sutcliffes- Barleypalooza, Barley House, Dallas Tx 6/1/97 xfer from Hi8 master tape incomplete

Let’s mix it up today and post a couple of short clips from some of the archives people have sent me.
The first one is a semi-obscure band called the Sutcliffes. I was trying to prep/align some analog camera angles of a Gourds 3 camera thing from this show, and I noticed that this was at the end of one of the tapes. I have heard of them because they played with Old 97s at times in the 90s, but I had never heard them. Discogs describes them as “Skiffle revival band from Dallas, Texas, founded in 1990.”, and they are not wrong. Their first album is even called Wall of Skiffle.
