Cracker- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 12/29/92 xfer from Hi8 Master LIVE

Here’s the last Cattle Club video I filmed(I think). I happened to be in town over the Christmas holiday, visiting family so I checked out Cracker at Cattle. They played there twice in 6 months! This one is so loud that it distorts the stock mic on the camera. I did not record any other audio sources either. Damn.

Monks of Doom- Emo’s, Austin Tx 12/12/92 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette Counting Crows Camper

FINALLY, here is today’s On This Date in history. When I was checking the spreadsheet for stuff to post and I saw this one there. I knew it came from Craig Hilmer and I have his master here so I went digging through the tapes… nope… this one isn’t in there. Maybe we’ll get a master transfer when Craig comes for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass again. Haha.

The mix was pretty uneven and it changes often, but it was super low on guitar throughout so I went ahead and rebalanced it. More guitar and more vocals. There are portions of the show that are pretty badly out of balance, but it sounds good for the majority of the set.

I love the contract and setlist J-Card cover that Craig made. I think we are still adhering to its terms by putting it up here. They are getting paid, they basically gave consent through the archive.org “approved band” status. I’m sure I’ll hear about it if not. lol

Rancid- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 12/11/92 xfer f/ master soundboard tape Punk w/ Billie Joe Armstrong

Since Doug’s tapes have been (and will be) dominating the weekday posts for a while, I figured I’d give the punk fans something to listen to before they bail on me. Maybe I will do this to mix things up at least once a week.
This one comes from Radley Hirsch’s amazing trove of soundboards that he taped while he mixed sound at the club. This one said “Rancid Gilman 121192 with bj”, and I think I hear Billie Joe speak into the mic at some point. This was before Green Day were banned from the club, so maybe BJA played this show with them- the google says that BJA played shows with them in 1993, so it’s plausible.
Thanks to Radley for preserving the history. I rebalanced this one (he prefers to keep the mix as originally produced- sorry Radley), but I think that it really helps this one… until the end and the mix changes dramatically.

Rebalanced by Shayne (Vocal +3, Bass +5, Drums +2)

Screeching Weasel- Circuits, Chicago Il 12/4/92 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Ramones Cover Set

Thanks to Mike Byrne for more info on this show. His brother Bob filmed this. Here’s what he had to say about it:
“33 years ago (1992, the show was 21 & over)My brother went and videotaped the show. This is right around the time that Screeching Weasel started to get really popular. A month before this show they almost sold out McGregors. The Methadones were supposed to open but ended up not playing (This was 8 years before I would join the band). Weasel played the entire Ramones debut album along with a song or two off of other Ramones albums (I Don’t Care and I Wanna Be Sedated) and two Weasel songs (Mary Was A Anarchist and Slogans).”

I did my best to brighten this up and denoise it, but it would look a lot better once a lossless transfer from the master happens.

Darling Buds- Metro, Chicago Il 12/2/92 xfer from 1st gen cassette WXRT-FM Broadcast

WXRT was such a cool station- they broadcast so many great shows in the late 80s, through the 90s. Many of them have been widely circulated and have even appeared on some official releases- gotta have that bonus material for reissues. This show seems to have flown under the radar a bit. I did not get this from my usual Chicago trading friends (Ross Weyman, Paul Galis, etc) and I got it after I was mainly trading on DAT… I wonder who I got it from…

Unwound- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 12/31/92 xfer from 1st/low gen soundboard cassette Olympia Wa KRS

I need to make this kinda quick since I am getting a shot at CVS in a few.
This one comes from Robert Eggplant’s collection. Quick note to Robert- I am still working your tapes, sorry for the delay. Fractured my left wrist and it is slowing me down.
OK, back to it. It’s kinda funny- digitizing the tape is only half of the time consuming battle. this one was marked “Unwound 1992”, so I had to hunt for the date when it actually took place. Nothing on the (steve) list, no flyers for the show.. but newspapers dot com comes to the rescue.
This mix sounds awesome btw.
