Paul Division- Aggie Hotel, Davis Ca. 12/31/96 Davis Musicians doing Joy Division Thin White Rope

I was planning on posting something else today, but Paul Ashby just posted this and it was too good… and how often do you get to hear Guy Kyser singing “new to us” joy division covers?

Here’s Paul’s summary of the show:
23 years ago tomorrow, “Paul Division” played the Aggie Hotel, ringing in the New Year with a cheery selection of festive Joy Division covers. I think we might have rehearsed once or twice.

Eric Janssen (guitar, bass on “Decades”), Paul Takushi (drums), Paul Ashby (bass, keyboards), and Guy Kyser (vocals).

We played at the Aggie twice. This is the only one that got taped. I have to believe it’s no less embarrassing than the universe intended.

Korn- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca. 12/29/96 xfer from 8mm master tape Enhanced 1080P Upscale Nu Metal

Alright kids, it’s time to feed you Bizkits and Korn with a spoon (if you get that reference, you are cool. If you don’t, you are still alright but you should google those lyrics and listen). Actually, it’s only Korn today- no Bizkits.
Korn opened for Metallica on a run of shows in late December 1996. Here is the Arco Arena stop of that tour. As always, huge thanks to Gary at @bootlegcowboys for giving the OK to post enhanced/upscaled Sacramento-related content to the channel/website here. Gary is cool.

Deftones- Maritime Hall, San Francisco Ca 12/20/96 xfer from 8mm master tape Enhanced 1080p

This weekend will be all stuff from Gary Shurtleff’s archive that I transferred for him a year or 2 back. He graciously allowed me to enhance and post all sacramento related bands and shows. Check out more of his stuff at @bootlegcowboys … neat video really works magic on the old 8mm tapes. I need to get back to my masters someday soon…
Anyway, following up the partial Deftones set last week, here is a complete Deftones show from 1996 on the adrenalin tour.

Here’s the 365th post of the year, and the last one of Gary Shurtleff’s ( @bootlegcowboys ) collection. Thanks Gary. Thanks to everyone for enduring a post every single day in 2023. Let’s keep the streak going into 2024.
This is Korn’s opening set for Metallica in Fresno. I searched everywhere for a poster for this show and came up empty, so the facebook post gets a photo of the OLD arena. I think it is still operating today, over 50 years old.

The Lemonheads- Sacramento Memorial Auditorium KWOD Christmas 12/11/96 DAT Soundboard Master xfer En

Here’s the last (partial) show that I got from KWOD show in 1996. I was a huge Lemonheads fan and was hoping that the soundman wouldn’t notice this guy standing next to the board with a DAT deck in his hand, attached to the board by a cable. It worked for about half the set until he walks over, looks at the back of the board and pulls the cables out at the beginning of Hospital. I was thinking “NO NO NO”. Oh well, I was happy to get anything.
Mix starts out a bit heavy on drums, but gets better a few minutes in.

Sebadoh- Sacramento Memorial Auditorium 12/11/96 KWOD Chistmas DAT Master Soundboard Rebalanced

This one has a story. Brian McKenna promoted this show and I had snuck my DAT deck into the venue. I ask him if we could get Sebadoh’s permission to tape since I had taped them back at Cattle in 1992. We get backstage and Lou Barlow says “oh, YOU are the guy who taped that Cattle Club show? I saw that for sale in Cambridge as a bootleg”. I had to explain that I was not an international bootlegging criminal and that some asshole that I traded with must be selling it. He still gave permission, thanks Lou! And see? This one never got bootlegged.
I had total impostor syndrome, taping through the board at this show. This was the place where I saw my first rock show (Iron Maiden/Scorpions 1982) so it was pretty surreal.
This Sebadoh set is WAY better than the one that we saw at Cattle. That one was painful. They do my all time favorite Sebadoh song, Willing to Wait.

I caught some of the Eels set since they played right before Sebadoh. There is some connection issue about 4min in, but I was able to rebalance this thing and it sounds pretty nice.
