False Liberty- New Method, Emeryville Ca 8/2/86 master audio cassette Seattle Hardcore Sunn O)))

It’s Mediocre Monday! Woohoo! Here is another time capsule recorded by Wayne Vanderkuil, from New Method once again. Recording quality is a bit rough, but where else are you going to hear a False Liberty tape from a warehouse squat(with beer being served from a detached bathroom) in 1986?
False Liberty were a Hardcore Punk band from Seattle. Greg Anderson (Southern Lord Records co-founder, Sunn O))), and many more) was on vocals, Justin Vaccaro on guitar, Pete Holden on bass and Victor Hart (Brotherhood) on drums.
It doesn’t sound that bad, all things considered.
I love Wayne’s comment “oh wow, they sound like DRI” after the first song. Indeed.

Attitude Adjustment- New Method Warehouse, Emeryville Ca 5/25/86 xfer from master audio cassette

Another Wayne Vanderkuil master tape of Attitude Adjustment. Probably my favorite bay area band from the 1980s. Thanks to Jim Pitts and others who helped me narrow down the location of the old warehouse on Google Maps- look at that building! This is during the era where the band was playing hour-long sets with just about every song they had. Love it.
Rick’s chunky bass tone is up front in the mix. Sounds good.

Attitude Adjustment- New Method, Emeryville Ca 3/21/86 xfer from master audio cassette

This is an example of how listenable one of these old 80s recordings can be, as long as it doesn’t get too loud. This one is pretty decent! Once again, from the collection of Wayne Vanderkuil. Thanks Wayne!
The flyer shows that the show was put on by New Method, but took place at Own’s Pizza. The cassette shows that it took place at New Method. I checked with Wayne and he remembers this show happening at New Method, so that’s what I am going with.
I love the part where Andy announces that they are doing an Exodus song and the band just jumps right into it for about 2 seconds.

Corrosion of Conformity- New Method, Emeryville Ca 1/26/86 from 1st gen tape COC C.O.C. Crossover

Ryan Nero (from Violent Coercion and more) mailed a cassette to me this week with this show on there. I had no idea that out of town bands the caliber of C.O.C. ever played the warehouse. So cool. Ryan even shared a scan of Strephon Taylor’s original “cut and paste” flyer made for the show. Wow! C.O.C. played a bigger show at the Stone in SF a couple days later.
This is a typical early punk rock recording. I was able to EQ a decent amount of distortion out of the tape, but still SO COOL to get this historical document digitized. Thanks Ryan!

Victims Family- New Method, Emeryville Ca 1/26/86 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette

Oh crap. 10:30pm- it’s been a while since I posted this late, but I am keeping the “one post a day” streak alive for 2023.
This was on the same tape as the COC set, and it is just as important to some people. This is the earliest known live recording of the band. It doesn’t sound perfect, but it is really cool to hear all of those old Voltage and Violets songs played in a punk squat warehouse, opening for COC. Now if we can just find the Sacrilege set…

Attitude Adjustment- New Method, Emeryville Ca 11/2/85 full show xfer from master cassette tape

OK, I lied about it being Ruthie’s week. I thought this tape was from Ruthie’s, but it is from the next day at New Method. Man, look at those killer lineups at that punk house. Yet another one taped by Wayne Vanderkuil, and another one that sounds pretty good for the time and equipment used. No shortage of Ruthie’s stuff to post in the future though, so stay tuned.
This must have been one of Kevin Reed’s last shows with the band before Andy joined.

Attitude Adjustment- New Method Warehouse, Emeryville Ca 10/19/85 xfer from master cassette

Mediocre Monday, y’all. Here is a super early Attitude Adjustment show from the archive of Wayne VanDerKuil. I could not find a flyer for this one, so I put a google maps image of where I think the New Method was. Ah, look at that gentrification today!
I am pretty sure that this is with an early vocalist of AA- maybe Nick Koljian or Kevin Reed. I know that it isn’t Andy because the vocalist keeps quiet between songs. Haha, just kidding you Andy.
Anyway, recording is a bit rough but listenable for hardcore fans. Another thanks to Wayne for loaning me the tapes, just getting started.

Violent Coercion- New Method, Emeryville Ca 10/19/85 xfer from master audio cassette

It’s Mediocre Monday again, and holy crap is this day mediocre at best. Take care of your back, kids. It affects your sleep when you get older. I would like to kick the guy who stagedove on me at the slayer show in 1985 in the privates right now.
Here is one that people will appreciate, but it is pretty rough sounding. That’s the thing with those consumer recorders in the 80’s- if a band played at a reasonable volume, you’d get a decent recording… but if they were loud, you get one like this.
Regardless, it is an important document- Violent Coercion were part of a scene that was the nexus of east bay punk. Aaron Cometbus says it well:
“Three members of Violent Coercion went on to form Neurosis, the fourth drew the cover of the first Neurosis LP, and the fifth ended up in Samiam. Talk about an all-star cast.” -Aaron Cometbus, 2018
