Mudhoney-Castaic Lake, Castaic Ca. 9/26/92 xfer from Hi8 Master

So this entire show is a long story- thanks to Scott Kennberg, I was able to get a pass. I thought it was a filming pass, but it was actually a backstage pass. It was really odd, being a 25 year old kid, given access to backstage with Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, and Kurt/Courtney/Frances. It made me feel pretty strange, so I bailed after a beer.

Anyway, here is Mudhoney’s set. They were GREAT. Encore is Fang’s “The Money Will Roll Right In” w/Kurt on guitar.

Mudhoney- Castaic Lake, Castaic Ca. 9/26/92 Part 1 Transfered from Hi8 Master!

This was definitely a strange day. I had trouble getting my camera nito the venue, so I had to track down Scott K from Pavement to get me a pass. It took quite a while(he was busy), so I just hung outside the gate for what seemed like forever. He was finally able to swing an all access pass. Thanks Scott! I actually had a tripod at the show, but there was no way to use it practically. So, you get a shaky handheld shot instead. Filmed with Sony TR81/stock mic and hi8 tape

And here is Kurt’s solo performance. Yes, that is my goofy ass voice saying “give me a break”.

Sonic Youth- Castaic Lake Ampthitheater, Castaic Ca 9/26/92 xfer from Hi8 Master w/Soundboard Audio

Here’s the final Castaic set. They were so loud that my original camera audio was all distorted, so this is a huge upgrade. Thanks Jonathan Wolff, Mike Ziegler, and King Bean for helping to make this happen!

Here’s what I remember of this show. I could not get my equipment through security, so I asked Scott K (Spiral Stairs) for help. He looked suuuuppeerrr put out but he came through with a pass about an hour later (thanks and sorry Scott). It was shortly before Pavement’s set, so I had to hustle out to the car, grab my stuff, and then hustle back in.
Later on, I realized that the pass was an all access pass and I really had to go to the bathroom, so I went back and grabbed a water and stuff. I remember walking by Kurt and Courtney, and I vaguely remember seeing a baby… but Frances was only like a month old at the time so maybe I am misremembering.
Sorry these sets from Castaic are such crappy camerawork. I had a tripod, but the entire place was just one huge, flat dirt field. There was no place to go. I should have just gone up on stage to film.
This was the last time I would see my friend Matt Polish(randomly saw him at the show) for over 20 years.

This is one of my favorite Mudhoney sets. I really liked Piece of Cake, so this set with songs from that new release, plus the classic stuff, plus Cobain joining them for a couple songs including the Fang cover was just perfect.

For this Cobain clip, I am SO happy to not have to hear my voice on the audio track anymore. I caught flak for not knowing who leadbelly was… in 1992. Yeah, sorry I wasn’t a music encyclopedia at 25 years old. How many of you metalheads/punk/alt peeps knew then?

Neil Young- Greek Theater, Los Angeles Ca. 9/22/92 xfer from DAT Master Audio Nakamichi CM300 Solo

Here’s another Neil Young solo show that I taped when I lived down there. What a week- 3 Neil shows during the week (and waking up to work all day the next day), and then Pavement/Mudhoney/Cobain/Sonic Youth on the weekend. Not a bad week at all.
The recording here is okay. Some clapping/chatter

Neil Young- Greek Theater, Los Angeles Ca. 9/21/92 Audio only xfer from DAT Master Nakamichi CM300

I moved to L.A. on the last weekend of August 1992, and hit a bunch of shows in late 92 into 1993. There was so much happening in the area, you could see something every night. My big regret is not digging into the smaller clubs to see what was playing- I only went to Raji’s once, and never went to Jabberjaw or Hell’s Gate. Oh well, hindsight and all that.
Another cool thing was being able to see artists play multiple times- I saw/taped Neil 3x in Sep of 92. They sound pretty decent but the crowd is a bit chatty.

Here come a few days of uncle tupelo tapes from their archive. This is an acoustic performance which is nice quality- lots of stuff from the march 16-20 release which is rare. Also rare is the cover of Neil Young’s “motion pictures” as an encore.
