Here is another show that Anonymous taped with his D6. It was a little thin so I EQ’d it to bring up the low end. Sounds great! I don’t always listen to 100% of everything I post- I just don’t have time- but I enjoyed this one so much that I kept on listening. I forgot to trim the blank space after Side A, so there is 2 minutes of dead air from 40:00 to 42:00, then it picks back up.
This was about a week before the Cattle Club show- they played SF and So. Cal before hitting Sac and Chico then heading home.
Here is setlist and show details from the Mudhoney Tourbook website.
8/29/89 Berkeley Square. Berkeley, CA (50 min)
Supported By: The Lemonheads
Set: Magnolia Caboose…, Get into Yours, No one Has, Sweet Young Thing, If I Think, Here Comes Sickness, The Father I Go, Come to Mind, Chain that Door, Flat Out Fucked, When Tomorrow Hits, Dead Love
Encore: In ‘N’ Out of Grace, Touch Me I’m Sick
Notes: Get into Yours, The Farther I Go, Flat out Fucked and When Tomorrow Hits are performed for the first known times. Come to Mind is played for the first known time with the music that appears on the recorded version, and the rave-up of The Farther I Go had previously been played as part of the music to the early Come to Mind. After The Farther I Go Steve is asking for some adjustments to be made to his monitor. Someone in the crowd is shouting about Mudhoney manager Bob Whittaker while he’s doing this, so he shouts, “Bob’s in jail, shut up!” to which Mark adds, “Free Bob! Free Bob!” It’s apparently sweltering in the club, and before If I Think, Mark announces, “You can turn off the lights if it’ll make it any colder.”

This was my first time seeing Primus, and it was my favorite set without a doubt. They open with Spirit of Radio! About an hour into the set, they do an insane funky instrumental version of Possessed’s “The Exorcist”! (for those of you who don’t know, Larry Lalonde(guitar) was in Possessed in the mid 80s).

This soundboard mix is probably the best mix out of all of the cicero’s shows. Unfortunately, it cuts at 90min. Photo is from closing night of the old basement location of Cicero’s- Jay Farrar made a surprise appearance with Brian Henneman and the Bottlerockets.

Here is another VHS tape that I inherited from Jason Ross. The audio levels were so low on this one that I cranked it up to the max volume in Sony Vegas (+12db) and this is what I got. Yikes. Odd video, where you see the crowd better than the performers. I don’t think I have ever seen a CM video outside of the east bay/sacramento area. This might be the only video document of that US tour with Billie Joe from Green Day on guitar

Camper Van Beethoven opened the 10,000 maniacs show I posted yesterday. I was a huge CVB fan and was mainly at the show to see them. It was strange seeing them in such a large venue, when we had seen them at River Theater just 3 weeks before this. I EQ’d this one to make it a bit less bright and boost up the bass. Yep, had even less bass than this originally.

Anonymous and I both got tired of our crappy audio recordings and bought Sony pro walkman decks in 1989. At the time, they were the best quality around. I have been enjoying quite a few of Anonymous’ recordings that he made in the 1989-1990 time frame, so expect more that sound like these in upcoming posts. I really like the D6/909 combo. Nice and clear recordings.
This was my first time seeing 10,000 Maniacs, and it was probably the best show out of them all.
