Camper van Beethoven- Fillmore, San Francisco 4/26/25 Complete 4K UHD Show w/ schoeps audio

A big thank you goes out to Thomas Harvey, Morst, and David Basham for coordinating me a camera pass. With The Fillmore’s over the top security, there was no way I could have gotten my DSLR into the venue without them. Thanks and sorry night 2 didn’t go well with the security for you guys.

Even with the help, it wasn’t smooth getting to the venue and getting in with the camera. Massive traffic jams from Sacramento meant that I had to take the north bay- golden gate detour to save time, then the box office acted like they didn’t have my credentials (they did), then once I got them, they made me wait at the back of a huge line to get in…due to over the top security searches at the door. I finally got ready and to the filming spot at 8:28pm, and they went on at 8:30!

The angle is pretty decent and unobstructed for the first hour-plus. Greg is a bit distant but I did my best to keep him in frame. Zooming up would lose focus at times on Greg only. Then at about 70min in, 2 tall dudes come and I had to shoot between/around them, so this isn’t as good from then on. Why didn’t I move? Because that would have affected the audio quality, plus I knew security wasn’t going to bother me at this spot so I didn’t want to risk it.

I don’t know why the hell the audio is so low– I pushed it right up to max when I rendered the video for upload.. for 31 hours…

But wow, what a great show! Just an absolute killer of a setlist. Thanks to the band for coming from all corners of the world to make it happen. What a treat. I got to see songs performed that I never thought I would see. Plus, I got to film a complete show at the Fillmore, which seems like an accomplishment.

Oh, and the last 20min or so is not great because I am old and filming like this is like doing yoga, and my body was breaking down. I had a ticket for sunday, but I was a slug on the couch instead.

Old 97s- Fillmore, San Francisco Ca 10/12/01 xfer from master DV Tape Incomplete Old 97’s Americana

This On this date in history video has a long story. I will try to keep it short.

This was the Old 97s’ first time ever playing the Fillmore, so there was quite a bit of excitement around the show. I get a video pass (back when the Fillmore allowed those- I could go on about this) and get right up front to video. It was so loud that you can see the volume actually affect the image quality at times. You can see the camera dip a few times- this is because I was getting asked if I had a pass to video from Fillmore staff about every 5 minutes. Super annoying.

About 35 minutes into the set, the camera stops. I figure that it needs a new battery but nope. I think the volume killed the camera. It was totally dead- I had to send it in for repairs.

The audio is super glitchy to start but it gets better a few minutes in. My old friend KN has superior audio- if I ever get the OK to synch it, we can do a better transfer of this videotape on the commercial/industrial machine I have and synch up his audio. Someday hopefully.

Rhett mentions a “Live at the Fillmore” audio release at the beginning. Never happened. You see some dude with a huge camera on stage- also never released. I hope that audio/footage is on a tape somewhere still…

Son Volt- Fillmore, San Francisco Ca 7/25/97 xfer f/ DAT Master Clone Live Jay Farrar Uncle Tupelo

I had an old friend request this to be digitized, so I figured that I’d add it to the archive. The funny part is that I took vacation and followed son volt from Arizona through southern cal, but did not tape this show. One day, those shows will be posted as well. I borrowed Kurt Vogel’s schoeps for that run, so they sound pretty good.
Side note- how do you like those DAT covers? I graduated from the old Typewritten covers to this in 1997. Classic.

Lush- Fillmore, San Francisco 9/7/96 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Shoegaze Miki Berenyi

I have been digging around in the VHS collections for some tapes for friends, and I keep coming across really cool stuff. I pulled some and put a pile aside and I am digitizing them as I get time, so expect some really nice OLD videos that are not circulated.. or at least not in this quality.
This one comes from Gary Shurtleff’s collection. I was never a “hide your camera from security and film the concert” kind of guy. People like Gary, Joe Burns and others turned this into an art form, getting some amazing results without anyone knowing except for them and a lookout.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- The Old Fillmore, San Francisco Ca 12/28/87 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette

It’s another bonus audio post for you today! From the writing on the J-card, this one might have come from my old friend DC. It’s interesting that both the writing on Dennie’s tape and the newspaper ad refer to the venue as The “Old” Fillmore. I had no idea that it was commonly called that at the time.

This one sounds pretty good- I EQ’d the bass up for obvious reasons.
