Slayer- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 12/31/84 audience recording xfer from master cassette thrash metal

It’s tour manager Doug Tuesday! I have a migraine and the meds are making it hard to hold up my head, so I’ll make this quick. There is a well-circulated board tape from this same date, but that setlist seems to be incomplete. This show opens with Chemical Warfare, then Aggressive Perfector/Face the Slayer etc. I guess this is the complete show while the board tape is partial.

Control- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca 12/31/84 xfer from 1st gen tape Bay area metal

This one also comes from Tour Manager Doug’s tapes and I can’t tell if he taped this one. I think he did, it sounds similar to other recordings… but it is on the B-side of that Exodus 1/5/85 show I posted on Monday. How could this be recorded on a tape, after a show that took place a week after? It’s a mystery.
Anyway, Control were one of the more popular bands back in the early days of the underground metal scene in SF. This show appears to be the final show of the “mach II” version of the band. Guitarist Chip Wagner quit the band the very next day.
They had a demo out that was well-received and I can’t find it on YT. Maybe I will post that one soon.

Ronnie Montrose- Keystone, Palo Alto 12/30/84 xfer from master audio cassette

You get audio on this fine Friday, since you got video yesterday. This is another one from Doug’s box of fun (that sounds wrong). The quality is similar to the BOC posted recently- really nice. Those hard rock bands really had nice sound. I saw Deep Purple at the amphitheater a few years back and it was probably the best live sound I have ever heard.

Exodus- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 12/28/84 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal MITFR Baloff

This one is just perfect. The quality is very good- nice and clean which allowed for a good EQ. The era is probably my all-time favorite — a nice mix of BBB and the demo era of songs. You get BBB songs, plus Hell’s Breath, Death Row, and Impaler. And probably best of all- Baloff is absolutely ON FIRE and hilarious. Referring to break dancing (which he apparently hated): “they can flip around in my toilet”. WHAT? Man, imagine Baloff on stage today- he would be a one man controversy machine.

Possessed- Ruthie’s Inn, Berkeley Ca 12/28/84 Audio xfer from 1st gen cassette

This show is shockingly well-documented. There is a mediocre quality video up on youtube that is a different source than this (this sounds better to my ears). If any industrious nerd wants to synch this audio to a CLEAN copy of the video (which I do not have, I don’t think), I can send you the wav file.
This one come from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection and was recorded by “Tour Manager Doug”. I was listening to the tape and really enjoying it… then, close to the end, you can hear Doug loudly express his distaste for Possessed, then he shuts off the deck mid-song and goes outside. I found that hilarious. You then get some fun talk with people (including Andy Andersen) outside of Ruthie’s. Truly a classic recording. Thanks Doug!

Page Three- Heartbreak Hotel, St. Louis Mo. 12/19/84 xfer from Beta master tape Enhanced

Another Page Three post from Robert Kuhlmann’s collection of beta tapes that I transferred a while back.
Here’s what Robert says about this show:
“I think the Christmas Show as a last minute fill in when one of the touring bands cancelled. That video brings back a lot of memories…Joe Williams, a dear friend and former Jet Lag editor was writing for the ST Post at the time. He loved Page Three and would often jump up to do vocals on Boys Dont Cry.”
Those old beta cameras had some nice microphones- sounds really good. Some parts of the stage were pretty dark, so I bumped up the brightness as much as I could without making Robert glow like a lightbulb.

Exodus- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca 12/15/84 xfer f/ master audio cassette Baloff Thrash Metal

Finally, a Tour Manager Doug post this week. As you could probably tell from the midnight posts, life has been a little chaotic lately.
This one sounds pretty good- you get most of BBB and some of the old songs that never made it out. Hell’s Breath & Death Row back to back rip!

Dicks- Rock Against Rent, SF Civic Center Plaza, San Francisco 12/8/84 Audio only soundboard remixed

I don’t usually post unknown generation tapes here- I try to keep it to stuff I taped, or stuff others taped. But every once in a while, an exception is warranted. Here is a tape I had never seen circulated before- and given the band and the location, it was worth a post. It cleaned up pretty nicely in Izotope as well.

Dead Kennedys- On Broadway, San Francisco December 1984 Audio Only xfer from low gen soundboard tape

Here is a potential rarity from Eric Mcintire’s collection. I say potential because it seems implausible that there is still an uncirculated DK sbd that was in trading circles back in the 1980s.
This show came from a person in Ashland, Oregon- same guy who had the uncirculated Dicks soundboard from SF. The setlist is about right for the december 1984 period, and if you look at setlist.fm, it was clear that they were mixing up the setlists at every show in december. A random guy jumps onstage about 15min in and mentions San Diego, but he is somewhat unintelligble so who knows if this is a San Diego show mislabeled. The first 6 minutes seem to be from a different show, and DRI is headlining that show. Anyway, if someone can help me sort this out, please let me know
