Here is another Buzzcocks show from the archive, during their first trip out west after they reunited in 1989. So my notes on this one say “1st gen cassette, done with my deck”. I can’t remember who borrowed my equipment to record this show- was it you, Mark Martin?
Anyway, I remixed it and took the edge off the high end and boosted the hell out of the bass. It was thinner before, believe it or not.

Along with posting videos from cattcle club and posting videos of local bands, I have been trying to post old shows from as many local venues as possible. Here is Tamtrum, a metal band from the 80’s. Our friend Marissa was in the band. There she is playing bass. At the very beginning of this one, there is about a 1 minute clip of “horse-cow”, a multimedia project featuring Steve Vanoni.
There is a story to go along with this one. We had a pretty tight circle of R.E.M. traders back in the late 80s- Craig Hilmer, Carolyn Adams, Ken Dixon, and a few others like the guy who taped this- Jeff Jones. I think that’s his name, it has been a LONG time. So we were trading for a few years and he also taped with a pro walkman, so it was nice to get good sounding tapes from his area. A rumor started that he was giving/selling his tapes to bootleggers so CDs or Vinyl could be pressed. I asked him about it and he tried convincing me to join the bootleg pipeline ranks! Anyone who knows me would realize how anti-bootleg I am. I shut him down on the spot and never heard from him again. I wonder how he is doing.
This show was a little odd sounding- the bass and guitar were way back in the mix. I did what I could with EQ and Izotope.

This was the first time I saw The Movie Stars, and I became a huge fan right away. They were alt-country/bluegrass before it was popular again. Members: Jill Olson- Bass/vocals; Steve Cornell- Guitar/vocals; Michael Montalto- Guitar; Brad- Accordion. Many members of this band went on to form popular bay area Alt-country band Red Meat.
This was my first time seeing the movie stars. I heard that they were very good so I took a chance and brought the camera out. I was not disappointed! I bought their Heck-Ola LP on the spot and went to see them every chance I could. Thanks to the band for being cool about my incessant
I was at this show and even filmed the opener (Movie Stars), but Exene put the ol kibosh on video so Anonymous’ audio recording is the only document we have. It sounds pretty good- I remember Anonymous not being too happy with the recording because it sounded thin and there was a lot of audience chatter (it was packed that night). I was able to rebalance it in Izotope to boost vocals, bass and guitar. Chatter still present but not too bad.

So I looked on youtube and there are a grand total of ZERO Alter-Natives live full show videos. They may have been a bit obscure, but they were a great instrumental band out of Richmond Va. This band also had a guy named Chris Bopst, who went onto become Balsac from GWAR for a stretch. OK, enough Alter Natives trivia for today. Recorded by me with my Aiwa CV-80 and Sony ECM909 mic strapped to the top.
I only did 3 videos from the coffeehouse (7 seconds, jonathan segel, and this) and I think this one turned out the best. The audio suffers a little since I was right next to the PA.
I’m so glad I got to see the Hard Ons early on, before they turned a bit more metal. Filmed with the Aiwa CV-80 with the Sony ECM-909 mic velcro’d to the top.
