Joe Fraulob’s birthday Jam- The Boardwalk, Orangevale 3/16/24 4K UHD Gary Holt Exodus Black Sabbath

Bonus post for you- Joe Fraulob (Danzig, Deconstruct, many others) threw a concert last night for his birthday and a ton of people came out, including Gary Holt from Exodus/Slayer. The show was over 2 hours long, so here is an early snippet. Gary came up and played on 2 songs- he was scheduled to only play one, but there were guitar issues during Paranoid, so he stayed up for the Priest cover.
Man, the schoeps sound nice in that room. Looking forward to recording more shows there. Derek Clark and his partner, along with the staff there have completely transformed the club into something… warmer. No dig on Mark, it’s just got that Hawaiian laid back vibe now. I really enjoyed it. They even have tropical/theme drinks for each show!
There were 4 different lineups who played a mini set each. I think I will post each lineup’s set separately. This was part of the sabbath set which featured Joe, Gary, Bobby Real, Ash Hades and Tom Frost.

Mr. Bungle- Warfield, San Francisco Ca. 2/8/20 Live 4K UHD Live Video Scott Ian Mike Patton Lombardo

Here is a first look at the Mr. Bungle show from last Saturday night. I need to recover another 5-10 minutes of the show (including my favorite song of the set, The Crumbsuckers’ Sit There), plus I need to degrain it and hopefully find a better audio source to synch to it. Stay tuned. Regardlerss, this turned out pretty damned nice. I LOVE the ZS200.
So I went into this with no expectations. I figured they’d play the demo and a few covers as a goof and be done. I did NOT expect for my face to be completely melted off. What an amazing show- you MUST GO if you have the opportunity. Trey is a beast on lead guitar, Lombardo is (imho) the best metal drummer ever, and it was obvious they were all having a blast. Scott never stopped smiling!
I was able to cut down on the amount of out of focus shots by turning on continuous AF, but I realized it was eating batteries like crazy so I had to shut it off for the last 15-20 min.
MVP of the night includes the person who got me tickets (you know who you are- thanks!) and Daniel Hague, who not only gave up his spot to me so I could film, but he also stood in the merch line so I could get a shirt! Thank you so much.

Slayer- Respectable Cafe, Miami 4/27/96 xfer from Hi8 master tape Enhanced

There is a different angle of this show with better audio courtesy of Will Salas. I showed the other video to Steve Rogers and he was blown away that someone else was filming the show. So, nice job taping will. This angle is shot from a tripod and the audio is super distorted. Maybe it would be good to edit these together one day.

Slayer- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca 1/22/95 xfer from 8mm master tape Thrash Metal Enhanced version

I never realized that Slayer headlined Arco. I lived in L.A. at the time and this totally passed me by. That kinda blows me away, never thought they were that huge in the mid 90s.
This is another one filmed by Gary Shurtleff- owner of the “bootleg cowboys” youtube channel. This one is already posted over there, but I denoised that 8mm grain out of it to post here… and he gave me the OK to post the sacramento stuff I transferred for him!

Here is what Gary had to say about the show:

I consider myself to be one of the lucky few who got to film Slayer with permission. Tom was interviewed for a video zine I was working with before the gig and after the interview we asked him if we could film the set. Tom said- Yeah sure, don’t release the whole show though. After 25 years sitting in the vault. Felt now is the time to finally share this RARE one with you thrashers!!

I firmly believe if they adopted a “taping policy” similar to Metallica. They could have reached an even bigger audience within the taping circles world wide.

My only gripe, is when zooming in, the focus is not sharp like it should be. Looking through these small view finders, sometimes one cannot tell if the sharpness is where it’s suppose to be. Anyways, enough of my rambling…..

Another side note – If you have ever seen the Serenity in Murder CD single cover, there is a fan who carved the SLAYER logo into his back with a knife and blood dripping down from the letters. That fan was from the Sacramento area and at this show. Which is where he showed Kerry, he thought it was insane but of course had to take a picture. So think of Sacramento 95 when you see the image.

Slayer- Divine Intourvention Tour Rehearsals, Orange Pavillion, San Bernardino 1/11/95 Hi8 master xf

Here is one of the mind-blowing videos from Steve Rogers’ collection of masters. Being an American Recordings employee allowed him access to artists that us ordinary mortals don’t have. Here is Slayer, preparing for tour the day before the Divine Intourvention kicked off in Del Mar.
Audio is a bit distorted but I think that deserves a pass, given the uniqueness of this one.

Slayer- Fresno Wilson Theater, Fresno Ca 8/23/94 xfer from 8mm master tape enhanced Thrash Metal

Here’s the last one from Gary’s ( @bootlegcowboys ) for a bit. He already has this posted on his channel, but this is a fresh transfer done on my equipment and then denoised in Adobe/Neat Video. That denoising works wonders for these grainy 8mm tapes. Big thanks to Gary for giving me the OK to post these “Sacramento” based videos (I am pretty liberal with that, I include central valley).

Slayer- Gold Record Presentation, Magic Castle Hotel, 1/17/95 xfer from Hi8 Master Reign in Blood?

Here’s another cool video from Steve Rogers of an industry event. I think this is for Reign in Blood, since it took that album about 6 years to go gold, and Tom’s references in his speech.
The first 3min of this are shots of the hotel and attendees, and then the ceremony starts.

Live Performance Video

Slayer- Backstage @ The Stone, San Francisco Ca. 8/12/88

Man, this one is hard to watch. I have only lost 1 of my master tapes and it was this one. If anyone happens to see an 8mm videotape with This, Dehumanizers from Danceteria in sac, and Flower Leperds from Gilman (all in August of 1988), please let me know. REWARD OFFERED. This fair quality/generated footage exists because Jesse Davis was kind enough to dig it out of a box of old VHS tapes he traded for, years ago. Thank you!

Anyway, Matt Polish was friends with the band and we had hung out with/partied with/chauffeured the band many times so hanging backstage was common… but this was the first time I had my NEW video camera, so we were all screwing around with it backstage. I was planning on filming from the stage, but KERRY knew I was a tape trader and told his security to not let me film. GRRR

Slayer- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca. 11/5/86 xfer from 1st gen audio tape Remixed Main Set

Thanks to Ken Doose for posting this flyer yesterday and starting some conversation around this show.
As I have talked about before, my friend Matt Polish was friends with the band. He toured with them in 1985 and by this time, he had gone to L.A. to hang with Jeff multiple times. So we got there early and went right back onto the NEW tour bus supplied by Def American. We step in there, and here are the guys in Slayer partying hard, and listening to… rap music? We were totally dumbfounded- what the fuck is this? It turned out that they had an advance tape of Beastie Boys’ License to Ill and they were BLASTING it as they partied on the bus. They were reciting every lyric. This was months before the Beasties were well known, and before Anthrax’ rap collaborations. Rap and metal at the time did NOT mix. It was one of the most hilariously jarring moments I have ever experienced. After an hour or so of goofing off, they got dressed and played this show. So funny.
No encores were recorded. I don’t know why.

Audio Live Concert

Slayer- Sherwood Hall, Salinas Ca 2/21/86 xfer from 1st or 2nd gen audio cassette

I usually don’t worry about posting on the anniversary of a show, but I see people posting and commenting on this show more often than most, so I figured I’ll pull it out and digitize it for you.
This show was memorable for a few reasons. First, after watching that life-changing D.R.I. opening set at Club Can’t Tell the previous August, I bought every D.R.I. thing (LP, 7″) and wore them out in 6 months. This would be the first show I saw of D.R.I. after being converted to a massive fan. Second, this was the first show I went to in a few months- I had lost my job in December (only time I was ever fired!) and was at a low point in life, in general. Me, Matt Polish and a bunch of friends piled into my 1985 Tbird and made the 3 hour drive there. Third, this was the first time that I was invited to hang backstage before the show- I had ended up back there afterwards, but Matt had become very good friends with the band so he (and friends) were invited to hang out… and I almost spilled the nails out of Kerry’s wristband right before the show. Who knew they weren’t in there securely?
