Slayer- Sherwood Hall, Salinas Ca 2/21/86 xfer from 1st or 2nd gen audio cassette

I usually don’t worry about posting on the anniversary of a show, but I see people posting and commenting on this show more often than most, so I figured I’ll pull it out and digitize it for you.
This show was memorable for a few reasons. First, after watching that life-changing D.R.I. opening set at Club Can’t Tell the previous August, I bought every D.R.I. thing (LP, 7″) and wore them out in 6 months. This would be the first show I saw of D.R.I. after being converted to a massive fan. Second, this was the first show I went to in a few months- I had lost my job in December (only time I was ever fired!) and was at a low point in life, in general. Me, Matt Polish and a bunch of friends piled into my 1985 Tbird and made the 3 hour drive there. Third, this was the first time that I was invited to hang backstage before the show- I had ended up back there afterwards, but Matt had become very good friends with the band so he (and friends) were invited to hang out… and I almost spilled the nails out of Kerry’s wristband right before the show. Who knew they weren’t in there securely?

Jeff Hanneman- Home Demos 1985/86 xfer from 2nd gen cassette

Happy Tuesday Everyone. This one will probably be a total TL;DR.
These posts are for Bobby Khan- thanks for the Slayer book! It was pretty damned good.
Pap Smear was a side project featuring Jeff Hanneman & Dave Lombardo (Slayer), and Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies. My friend & Roseville High School Alum Matt Polish (IGD) also handled vocal duties on one demo. I believe I have the best copies of these tapes, as I got them from Matt.
Here’s the backstory of Matt’s involvement (and how I got the tapes). Matt befriended Slayer in August of 1984- he approached Tom Araya at the Aquatic Park show in Berkeley with beer and became fast friends with the band. He toured with them on the Summer Fashions Tour in 1985. At about this time, Jeff Hanneman would invite Matt to L.A. where they would get hammered and do music or other stupid stuff. One time, they went to Toys R Us to buy the most stupid thing they could think of. Matt won the competition by buying a kiddie pool.
So every few months, Matt would call me (he lived in Rocklin) and tell me to come over. He would play me tapes that he got from Jeff from his trips to L.A.. Some of them were classic punk tapes (Wasted Youth, Black Flag etc) and some were Pap Smear demos. I would copy everything and keep them stored away. Matt’s original (1st gen) copies from Jeff are gone, so this 2nd gen is probably the lowest tape available.
Here is the second tape that Matt brought back. This tape was amazing- it filled up most of the 45min side. It has A couple of Hanneman home demos, Papsmear with Jeff on Vocals, Bloodcum’s Wild Rags demo (WAY better then the official release) and Papsmear with Matt Polish on Vocals.
This Jeff solo stuff is so great. I bet he recorded a ton of this stuff. Hopefully Kathy or his estate will release it one day- so good.

Pap Smear- Demo 1986 Jeff Hanneman on Vocals xfer from 2nd gen tape Slayer Papsmear

There are 3 versions of the Pap Smear demo- the one I posted yesterday (instrumental), this one with Jeff on vocals, and the one with Sacramento native Matt Polish (IGD) on vocals. I should be able to post that one tomorrow.

Don’t tell Matt or Tom Araya, but these are my favorite versions of these Papsmear songs. Jeff kicks ass on vocals.

Jeff Hanneman- Home Demo #2 xfer from 2nd gen tape w/Angel of Death bridge Slayer

Here is the 2nd Hanneman demo that was on the tape from Matt. This is a one song demo that features a bridge from Slayer’s Angel of Death. This was probably written before the Slayer song, and Jeff grabbed the bridge from this song since it fit so well. It’s odd hearing this again, after hearing the Slayer song so many times.

Pap Smear- Demo w/ Matt Polish Vocal xfer from 2nd gen tape Slayer Papsmear

Here is the last demo from the tapes that Matt brought back from Jeff. Matt told me that he was “singing” a bit off time because Jeff got him extremely drunk, and then decided to record vocals.

D.R.I.- Club Can’t Tell, Sacramento Ca. 8/25/85 Audio Recording xfer from master tape

Here is something that I posted to youtube in 2016 but it somehow didn’t get posted to the sac music archive. Ugh, I hate that. Who knows how much more from my YT channel is missing from the website. I even re-digitized it today. Annoying.

Anyway, I don’t usually do the “on this day” type of thing, but this one was a life changer. I was a total metalhead at the time and went to see Slayer, but D.R.I. was opening the show. I had never seen a band play this fast- I was hooked immediately. I bought “Dealing with It” right after the show and it was my soundtrack for the rest of the year. Then came the obligatory purchases of Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Adrenalin O.D, Crucifix, and so many more. So thank D.R.I. for the crash course (or is it thrash course) into punk.

I told the A.O.D. guys that they were on of my gateway bands because they were mentioned on one of Anthrax’ liner notes. They joked that that was a great trade- Anthrax plays arenas and they got Shayne in return.

Oh, it seems like the Slayer show from this date is not in the pile of 4,000 tapes I have here in my collection… but I think I saw Ron Quintana post a pic of a stack of cassettes recently with that show in there. Maybe we can convince him to stop teasing us and post it! 🙂

Slayer- Scum, Katwijk Netherlands 5/31/85 xfer from master or 1st gen Soundboard tape thrash metal

The onslaught of early metal from Doug’s collection continues. I am not clear on if this is a master tape, or a copy from the master. I do know that this is way cleaner than the currently circulating versions. There is virtually no hiss on this tape.
With that said, the mix was not great. I did my best to improve it, but this is about as good as I could get it. I did some pretty radical things in Izotope, but there was no getting those guitars any louder. They jump up during leads anyway.

Slayer- Palladium, Hollywood Ca 4/19/85 xfer from master tape Ultimate Revenge Thrash Metal

Onward with the next set from the Ultimate Revenge show that Doug taped. This appears to be the only one that ever circulated in audio form- I got it in a trade back in the 80s, but it sure didn’t sound this good.
It’s a return home for the band and the crowd is clearly going ape shit.

Slayer- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca 4/13/85 xfer from master audio cassette rebalanced Thrash Metal

It’s tour manager Doug Tuesday! I checked the remaining shows left to post from his collection, and it looks like I have just about the exact number of Slayer shows to get us to the week of Aftershock Fest.. so guess what you are gonna get every Tuesday?
This was the first time I had ever seen Slayer and I was already a massive fan of the band. We had worn out the grooves on the Show No Mercy album, and Hell Awaits had just been released. As soon as we showed up at the venue, we saw my friend Matt Polish who was friends with Slayer. We got to hang out the entire night backstage, it was surreal. When Venom started their set, I had a tough choice- keep hanging with Slayer, or watch the Venom set? I figured I would catch Venom next time so I watched a bit of the set and headed back to the backstage party. I figured I would catch them next time. There was no next time. Still an amazing memory.
Dave Lombardo gave me his Venom Tour ’85 backstage pass that night and I ended up selling it on Ebay years later. D’oh! Shoulda kept it.
Oh, about the tape. This one was a little rough so I tried to EQ it, but that buried the vocals so I boosted them in Izotope. Both tapes from this night (Doug’s and Mark Martin’s) are pretty rough; it was loud.

Slayer- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca. 4/13/85 xfer from Audio Master

Here’s the other tape I transferred today. Since there was so much hype about Slaxodus playing the pizza park a couple weeks ago, here’s the real deal from the first time they came to Sacramento. My friend Matt Polish got me and my cousin Tony backstage to hang with the band. Good times. One of my big regrets was hanging backstage with Slayer during Venom’s set. I figured I’d catch them next time…
