Neurosis- Own’s Pizza, Berkeley Ca 5/30/86 xfer from master cassette 2nd show ever

Hi Everyone! It is a very special episode of Mediocre Monday today.
A couple of weeks back, I drove to SF and had lunch with Wayne VanderKuil. He brought his tapes along so I could start digitizing his collection. Wayne was one of a small handful of people who were taping back in the early days of Bay Area thrash/punk/crossover. He started in the early to mid 80s and is responsible for a bunch of the master tapes from Ruthie’s Inn, Rock on Broadway, Gilman and many more. Big thanks to Wayne for trusting me with his collection!
It’s a mediocre Monday post only because of the quality- none of us had professional equipment back then, so some recordings lacked dynamic range or were distorted. This is one that is super rare, but a bit distorted. Here is the 2nd show ever from Neurosis. The flyer had no address, so he had to drive around and listen for the noise. Thankful he found the place. 🙂

Attitude Adjustment- New Method Warehouse, Emeryville Ca 5/25/86 xfer from master audio cassette

Another Wayne Vanderkuil master tape of Attitude Adjustment. Probably my favorite bay area band from the 1980s. Thanks to Jim Pitts and others who helped me narrow down the location of the old warehouse on Google Maps- look at that building! This is during the era where the band was playing hour-long sets with just about every song they had. Love it.
Rick’s chunky bass tone is up front in the mix. Sounds good.

MDC- New Varsity Theatre, Palo Alto Ca 5/24/86 xfer from master tape M.D.C. Millions of Dead Cops

Another day, another MDC post. It seems like I have been posting at least 1 MDC thing each week for months now. Here is a long set, possibly the longest set I have seen, from the Smoke Signals era. Sounds decent for a 1980’s punk recording.

I think I EQ’d this one in Sony Sound Forge 10 to bump up the bass

Christ on Parade- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 5/24/86 xfer from master Soundboard Audio tape remixed

I am checking the view stats for Sac Music Archive and I have to say, not enough people are checking out these Christ on Parade shows. I’ll just keep posting them until you see the light, or one of them gets at least 100 views…

This is an xfer from Eric Mcintire’s master tape of this show. I didn’t know (or remember) that this was a master tape until he reminded me yesterday! The mix was super vocal heavy, but it gets better after about 15min. As a general rule, I based my board remixes on the last half of the show, as the board mix tends to stabilize then. So the first part might be less than perfect, as this one is. I boosted guitar and bass(and decreased vocal) as much as I could to this mix without making it sound weird.

Verbal Abuse- Rock on Broadway, San Francisco 5/16/86 xfer from master cassette

Late post today- very busy day around here. Here’s another VA show from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. I mentioned that it seemed that VA were on just about every show.. and now you know I wasn’t joking about it. I got to see them SO many times and they brought the energy every single time.
Here they are opening for English Dogs.

English Dogs- Rock on Broadway, San Francisco Ca 5/16/86 xfer from master cassette tape

Following yesterday’s post (Heathen’s opening set), here is the English Dogs headlining set. I have heard a couple of people talk about the venue losing power and a poor performance, but I don’t hear that.
The taper is not a fan of the English Dogs. I edited out the 5min of trash talking before the show starts, but there may be some chatter between songs.
