Avengers- Stern Grove Festival San Francisco Ca 7/25/21 4K UHD Live Panasonic GH5S Rode Videomic Pro

Hey everyone, here comes a set of 4 videos in a row running through the weekend. The first one is from last Sunday. My friend Gary Shurtleff scored tickets to the Avengers/X show at Stern Grove. The festival started in 1938, and this was the first punk show in their history. Pretty cool.
Me, Gary and Jesse Davis were able to get a nice view just above the concrete amphitheater seating, on a log. When you are in the dirt and on a log, trying to assemble an $1100 lens onto a $1700 body, it makes you a little nervous.. but it all went off without a hitch. I have never filmed a band from so far away– I was so far back there, you can see a slight delay in music vs. picture.
All of the controls on the camera are manual except for a push-button autofocus. I lost focus a couple times, but I think I did an OK job considering how far away I was. Great set by the band- far more energy than the headliner I think… or maybe I am just biased.

Avengers- Dangerhouse Reunion Show, Echoplex, Los Angeles 11/9/14 Part 1

I am pretty happy with the quality of this one. It’s challenging to record a band when they have uneven lighting- they had a film projected on them as they played- but it’s not too bad. Please give it a few minutes for me to adjust my camera settings. Sounds great! I was holding the HFG30 over my head to film this, and the camera is heavy- it was like a 5 hour punk rock yoga lesson- I was sore for a couple days afterwards. Jim Utz, Penelope Houston and Lance Davis might want to see this one. 🙂 Jim flew from St. Louis for these shows!!

This is part 1 only- you can find the rest of the show on Youtube

Avengers- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 11/7/14 Multicam with Matrix Audio Part 1

This was a fun night- my friend Jim Utz flew out from St. Louis to see the Avengers play and they were nice enough to allow me to video as well. It was strange- the band was ready to play an encore, and the venue flipped on the house lights and everyone left. Bizarre. Filmed with 1 HFG10 on tripod, 1 HF200 on tripod, and 1 HFG30 handheld (I should have used a monopod). Audio is soundboard + audience (Schoeps MK4). Soundboard mastered by me, audience by Jason Ellis. Matrix mix by Jason Ellis. Thanks Jason! Multicam editing done by Bong (thanks a lot, man) with special thanks to Tromster. These guys rule and are the reason why I am able to post these multicams! Enjoy

Avengers- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 1/18/08 xfer from DV Master Enhanced Live

This was one of the handful of shows that I shot with the Panasonic AG-DVC30 camera. It was a pro DV camcorder, but it was HUGE. This one came out with an odd green tint that I was able to finally correct in Adobe Premiere. “Anonymous” also audiotaped the show and it sounds much better than this- hopefully we can synch the sources one day.

Equipment Used: Panasonic AGDVC30 & unknown (may have been stock mic, may have been shure VP88)

Enhancement: Increase brightness, exposure & remove green tint + denoise in Adobe Premiere + Neat Video.

Avengers- Plainfield Station, Woodland Ca. 8/13/06 xfer from DV Master Enahcned w DAT Audio Punk

This was my first time to this venue. I drove on the backroads of woodland for what seemed like forever in the dark and you come up on one small building among the ag fields. What a bizarre but cool place to have a venue/show. I have not heard of any shows there for a long time- does anyone know if they still have them?
This was also my first time seeing the Avengers. I had been a fan for many years, but missed the Scavengers gilman show in 99. I was too young to see them the first time around.
My memory is playing tricks on me- I thought that I had been on the left side of the venue but this looks like I filmed it dead center. The DAT audio sounds really nice after a few minutes. Good main set, and then the band gets called back for an unexpected 10min encore. Good stuff.

Penelope Houston- Starry Plough, Berkeley Ca 10/19/91 DAT Master Tape xfer Nakamichi CM300 Avengers

This was a memorable night. Craig Hilmer was in town fromt he midwest. We had traded tapes for years but this was the first time we met face to face. The Bernat brothers came up from San Diego for the occasion as well. We were trying to figure out what to do for the night. I was lobbying to see Penelope at Starry Plough because both the artist and venue are awesome, and the Bernats were trying to persuade Craig to go to Beat Farmers at Slim’s. We decided on Penelope. I had a few too many pints and crashed on Craig’s hotel room floor. I woke up the next day extremely hung over and drove home while the Oakland hills were on fire. Very surreal.
Penelope played 2 sets, almost 2 hours of music and no repeats. Great stuff!
