Miki Berenyi- Great American Music Hall, San Francisco Ca 10/27/25 4K UHD w/Schoeps Audio Lush Indie

Let’s do the Patreon Voter’s Choice first today! I just remembered that I haven’t started the ballot for this week- yikes! Get in on it ASAP if you want to vote on something cool this week. This week’s theme- Off List Audio.

Miki Berenyi came to SF last week for the last time and played a bunch from her MB3 releases and SIX lush “covers”! I was able to make my schoeps recording sound decent- it was very bassy and muddy. I EQ’d out some of the lows, boosted the mids, and then ran it through Izotope to bring up vocals as much as possible without it sounding bad.

There are quite a few people in the way of the shot, especially later in the show. I knew that GAMH were sticklers about monopods on the floor, so I brought this little selfie stick and popped it in my shirt pocket. I needed some support since the left hand isn’t all the way healed yet. It wasn’t as high as my usual monopod and it kinda worked… and then some tall dudes get in the way toward the end of the set and I didn’t want to move and ruin the audio sweet spot. So there ya go. This is what happens when you compromise audio and video. It’s not terrible.

Thanks to my friend (and Sac Muisc Archive board member) Jim Utz for the help with the camera pass. This probably wouldn’t exist without him!

Son Volt- Great American Music Hall, San Francisco 5/3/17 Part 1 Canon HFG30 Rode VPS mic

Here’s the first 25min or so of the Son Volt set from Wednesday in SF. Brian McKenna & I had dinner seats and it was a great place to video from. Unfortunately, GAMH security put a stop to the filming fun early on. They let me film Belly last year, but Son Volt is anti-video, I guess. He said only “their guy” could video. Awww, I used to be their guy 25 years ago. I guess my Guy card expired. It all turned out for the best anyway. I was audio taping as well and it does not sound great in the balcony. Once they stopped the filming, I went downstairs to the floor and the recording sounds good! Not only that, I did not see any guys from the Schoeps Club at the show. I guess they were at okkervil river or willie nelson. It was a surprise that my recording may be the best of the night. Anyway, enjoy.

Belly- Great American Music Hall, San Francisco Ca. 8/26/16 Canon HFG30 and Rode Video Pro Mic

This was a show I was looking forward to. I bought tickets 6 months ago and it has been sold out for a while. Out of all the 90s alternative bands, I saw EVERYONE (Nirvana 3x, Dino Jr 3x, Buffalo tom 3x, Meat Puppets 10x, Teenage Fanclub, etc etc etc) except Belly, and they were one of my favorites. We got tot he club and it said “no flash photography” so I walked in with my G30 and set up. I was quickly accosted by security, and they told me I could film but I could not have the monopod on the floor. I handheld it for a bit (you’ll see) but then got the great idea to put the monopod base in my pocket. It worked like a charm and I filmed that way up until the encores, when security man came by and said no monopod AT ALL. So, the encores suck. Sorry. It turned out pretty nice- audio & focus gets better about 20min into the show when I take it off auto. PS: dot-com snobs with their glasses of wine don’t like punk videographers. FYI.

Centro-Matic: Great American Music Hall, San Francisco 2/19/03 xfer from DV Master!

Here’s a video of Centro-Matic in their prime. This set was pretty short because they were opening for Ben Kweller on this tour.. but it was the only video of Centro that turned out ok. I did another from 2002 in Sacramento, but it is super dark. Filmed with a nice JVC DV camera- don’t remember model #. I also have a DAT soundboard of the set, but this audio is just from the camera.

Centro-matic: Great American Music Hall, San Francisco 2/19/03 Xfer DV Master w DAT Soundboard Audio

Here is one that I have been wanting to synch up for quite a while, and decided now is a good time because Will Johnson is coming through town (er, Reno) this week! Also, Centro-Matic is scheduled to play their first show in 7 years in a month or so.
Thanks to Will for always being cool about taping.
