Sweet Baby- Ft. Worth, Tx. 4/29/89 xfer from unknown gen VHS tape Jesus Pop Punk

A part of this show is on youtube but it is in comically poor quality and it is incomplete, so I figured I would post this for today’s On This Date in History.

Sweet Baby (Jesus) were pop punk pioneers- 2 years before Green Day formed, Sweet Baby were already cranking out pop punk gems like “She’s from Salinias” and “Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby I Love You”. I can’t think of another east bay pop punk band that preceded Sweet Baby Jesus.

They had a number of releases on a variety of labels including Ruby Records and Lookout. They disbanded for the final time in the late 1989 or early 1990 after they were dropped by Ruby. Clearly ahead of their time.

I was trying to post last night’s show, but YT has decided to take its sweet time to process that one. I think this is a pretty decent consolation prize. This one comes from Radley Hirsch’s generous archive of tapes that he digitized, and I don’t see it anywhere on the internet. They sound really great here.

Here’s the last video from that Russ Bree VHS tape in Chris Eng’s collection. I wonder if he taped more shows.. if anyone knows Russ, ask him about his tapes.
Here is a rare Sweet Baby Jesus video. I think there was only 1 other video (Gilman Battle of the Band 6/14/87) and this one before they dropped “Jesus”.

Alright people, you really need to stop the ties with the Patreon weekly votes. It forces me to choose, or it doubles my workload. Hopefully getting the vote off that crappy eballot and onto the Patreon platform will help.

This one was only 5 minutes long, so I’ll do both winners this time. One today, one tomorrow. We had some fun with this one- I went to the lookout records group and asked for bands to include. Then I plucked some shows from my list and friends’ lists. Surprised MTX struck out with so many people asking for it on the fb group. Guess we need more voters from there.

It’s time for the Patreon Voter’s choice post of the week! Well, I need to apologize. I grabbed 5 random shows from Radley’s folder of goods and did not realize that this one was only 2 minutes long. LOL. I will also post one of the longer ones that tied for 2nd place, hence 4 posts today:

Sweet Baby Jesus- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/14/87 xfer from VHS Master Tape Enhanced Pop Punk

It’s Friday, so here is the first video for the weekend. Are you being good capitalists and shopping for Black Friday? I went to Goodwill.
Here is yet another set from Chris Eng’s tape of the Battle of the Bands show. It is taking weeks to get through each of Chris’ tapes since he filmed so many back to back, and there are hundreds of tapes to do. Years of stuff.
Sweet Baby Jesus was one of those bands who seem destined to big things, kind of like my comments on Tilt earlier this week. Definitely the most accessible out of the first wave of Gilman bands. I love ’em.
