Secret Chiefs 3- Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca. 8/29/17 Mr. Bungle Canon HFG30 This was a total surprise. I had no idea who these guys were, and then Sherman told me that it was Trey from Mr. Bungle’s band. I had no idea he was doing anything new. So I bought a disc and started filming without knowing anything about them. What a mind-blower! They are so unique, you just need to listen. The most complicated (but still engaging) music I have ever heard. The drummer is ridiculously talented.

Dead Cross- Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca. 8/29/17 Canon HFG30 Rode VPS Mic

Here’s the vid posted on the right YT channel. Sorry about that. Dead Cross- Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca. 8/29/17 Mike Patton Dave Lombardo Canon HFG30 The challenge of filming at Ace of Spades is getting access to the bands to ask permission. Even though Lisa and the venue staff are totally cool, I usually need to work through layers of people to get to people that I *know* would give me the OK if I could tell them how they knew me way back in the 80s. This time around, 3 people did me a solid to make this happen. Zoran Theodorovic of Capital Chaos TV for giving my DVDs of Mr Bungle/river thtr & Slayer backstage at the stone to the band (through tour manager), Sherman Loper for telling me that Trey from Mr. Bungle was in Secret Chiefs 3 (I had no idea), AND he was at the merch table- I was able to get my pass & equipment in the door.. and Vinny Palese, who secured permission for filming from Dead Cross’ management. Truly a team effort. Thanks guys! I am using the line in setting with the Rode mic and audio is coming out WAY better. I should have been doing that from the start!

Lydia Loveless- Ace of Spades, Sacramento 10/5/16 Multicam with Schoeps Audio

Man, did this one turn out nice. The only small issue is that I accidentally cropped Todd May out of the full stage angle, but I got enough of him in the roving shot to make up for it. Filmed with 2 HFG30, 1 HFG10 and a gopro. Thanks to Jason Ellis for the audio, Brian McKenna for securing permission to film, Ben Lamb for giving permission, and Dillon Fries for the edit. It turned out great!

Drive By Truckers- Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca 10/5/16 Part 1 Multicam with Schoeps Audio

I had been a casual fan of DBT for over 15 years, but the new American Band album blew me away. I was so happy that I was able to get permission to film them when they came through last October. Filmed with 2 Canon HFG30, 1 Canon HFG10 and a gopro. Audio courtesy of Jason Ellis. Thanks to Brian McKenna and Jenn Bryan for the help in securing permission to film, and special thanks to Dillon Fries for the edit.

P.I.L. – Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca. 11/28/15 Audio DPA 4061 Mics / Sony M10

This is not a video- this is an audio recording of this show. I have had these mics for about 5 years now (thanks Jason for giving me a good deal on them) and this is probably the best sounding show that I have recorded with them. Recorded about 20 feet back from the right PA stack. This is completely raw- I have not remixed or adjusted levels. You might want to bring your bass down in your EQ a bit. Some people who went to the show may enjoy this: Brian McKenna Jerry Perry Larry Boothroys Paul Piazza Dal Basi and I am sure I am missing many others.

Stick to Your Guns- Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca. 11/21/15 Multicam Hardcore Punk

Another show, another run-in with Ace of Spades security crew. I got to the venue SUPER early, during soundcheck to secure permission. Drew & the band were cool about it and got the OK for me. I went to dinner then came back and set up my equipment, which includes a tripod at the far corner of the photo pit next to the stage. I have done this multiple times before. 5 minutes before the show, I have 3 cameras set up and running. Mr. yellow jacket comes over and here’s how the conversation goes: YJ: “Is that your camera up front on a tripod” Me: “Yes it is.” YJ: “You need to move it, it can’t be there” Me: “….(shocked pause) WHY? I have set up tripods there multiple times and it has worked out fine” YJ: “You camera is going to get destroyed. it will get knocked over” Me: “I assume full responsibility for the camera” YJ: ….. (pause) “You need to move the camera” So, instead of 3 camera, this is 2 camera. I tried to be extra diligent with the camera work to make up for it. Thanks to Agelos for the killer edit(he likes this band a lot). Taped with 1 HFG10, 1 HFG30, and audio is from Rode Video Pro microphone. Thanks to the band for permission, and thanks to the guy on the upper level for watching the second camera!

Saxon- Ace of Spades, Sacramento Ca. 8/23/15 3 Camera Multicam w/Schoeps Audio!

This one has a bit of a story. I went to the show to film opening band Discordia, and to ask Saxon if they would allow me to film. I was surprised that their road/merch manager (who was wearing an Infest shirt!) gave me the ok. So I set up the 3 cameras and start filming the show. During the 2nd song, the tour manager comes over (outranks the road manager) and says “you can’t film””well, you can film, but not the entire show.” at the same time the Ace of Spades security guy is yelling “PUT YOUR STUFF IN THE CAR”. So, I complied, and shut down. Of course the show was amazing, with almost the entire set being from the first 4 albums. Thanks to Agelos for the edit and to Jason Ellis for the Schoeps audience recording. Nice! SO, here’s your 3 songs.
