I am short on time so I’ll keep this one short. Also, after taping 2 shows in 2 nights and working my ass off at home yesterday, I need to recover a bit. The one thing with aging is that you can still go have fun, but your recovery time sucks. Riot Radio was one of the openers for that Zeke show at the cafe. I think this was a tour kickoff show for them- they did a short run up to the northwest.. I think.

I was super stoked when the Cafe announced that Zeke was playing there- I have been trying to catch them live for quite a while. I got to the venue super early and got band permission to record (Mark was super cool), and started to work on prepping the multitrack laptop. Well, the f’ing thing would not read the channels- I don’t know if it is a driver issue or what. I worked on it forever and no dice. I still have the Schoeps so it should be fine⦠and then my Schoeps preamp crapped out during the opening band. So that leaves us with the Rode Videomic pro for audio. It was lacking some guitar and vocals, so Mark and I worked on it to get it decent. I have never had TWO audio sources fail on me before the opening band finished their set. Anyway, this was probably the best show I have ever seen at the Cafe. Man, they just ripped. Oh, also, first multicam with 2 G9ii’s! If anyone wants to buy one of my GH5s’s, I’ll cut you a deal.

BtB, BtH are a local/regional? band who play around often. With a name like that, I was expecting some tuneless grindcore but this was a pleasant surprise. Catchy Metal/Punk crossover played tight. I enjoyed it. Audio is a bit low- it would have taken a lot of hoop-jumping to bring it up, so please save me some time and turn it up! And yes, it was really that dark on stage. I kept the light sensitivity where the vocalist would not overexpose under the one light on stage. You can still see the other members, kinda. You can see the guitarist’s strings, that’s what counts. No schoeps audio for the entire show- the preamp died during this set. D’oh.
I made a mistake in yesterday’s post- the correct name of the band is Bloodlake. There is no info that I can find about the band, so let me know if you have ever heard of them. They were a bay area thrash metal band from the 1980’s. On to today’s- I had never heard of the band LUV before, so I asked Chris Lemos if they were any good. He gave me this detailed, glowing recommendation and told me which bands the members had been in before so I made sure to video the set. I can’t remember a thing that he told me about the members, so let me know if you know. Having a name like LUV makes it really hard to find them in internet searches.

It’s not every day that a legendary Dutch hardcore band plays in your town. I don’t get out a whole lot anymore, but Neuroot and Xclaim on the same show got me out of the house. Unfortunately, I had no time to prep for a multicam, so this single cam w/schoeps audio will do.

Xclaim played one final show at the cafe last month, opening for Dutch legends Neuroot. The band is Charles Albright on Guitar, Craig Hancock on drums, Brian Hanover on bass, Tommy Faucett on vocals, and Steve Borek from BāLAST on Guitar. It was a blast!(get it?) But seriously, I am not big on tributes but this was a lot of fun.

I already talked of the awesome atmosphere that Louie’s provided, but if you missed it, here it is again: I had never been to Louieās, but it is one of those OLD neighborhood bars that have been around for as long as I can remember. How old? Well, I canāt find that info online but they have not one but TWO bingo nights each week! I ordered a drink (Jack & Coke) which was about 75% jack, 25% coke. Even the melted ice tasted like Jack Daniels, until a drunk guy stumbled over and knocked the plastic cup (no glass-the bar clearly knows their clientele) on the ground. $8 for the alcohol content of 3 drinks in other bars- great value! On to the venue side of the club- it was way better than I expected. They have a proper stage, lighting and PA. They have one of those black and white checkerboard floors, like the press club used to have. The PA could not quite keep up with Alexā guitar volume, but it didnāt sound bad at all. The audio level on this is a bit low, but I did not have time to fix it if I wanted to post today. Still need to check the schoeps audio to see if this warrants a repost later. It was also nice catching up with my long-time friend Loren Scott. We chatted right up until Unprovoked played- he plays bass in the band. I have been meaning to see the band play for years, and vocalist Darren Chaney had laryngitis! He had no voice when I spoke to him. Then they went on and he sounded fine- it was wild. If it was me, I would just squeak myself through the set. Oh, one last thing- since the drinks were so strong, this was the drunkest crowd I have ever seen. People were stumbling everywhere. After the Accused finished and the house lights came up, this one long-haired metal dude was standing there (well, trying to stand), staring at his hands. He apparently thought that his fingernails were painted in a shade of black (metal approved), but they were instead painted a beautiful shade of blue. Perfect ending to the night. I will definitely come back to Louieās for another show!

This might be a long post. After missing the Punk in the Park and Omega Fest shows yesterday(I had planned to cut over early evening to Omega), I was able to get the kids to bed in time to head over to Louie’s Cocktail Lounge to see Unprovoked and Accused A.D. Since RKL is doing a run of shows through California next month, I’ll post this and 1 or 2 more older shows of theirs so you call can get prepared. Here is the 2nd night of the Bottom of the Hill shows last May with former vocalist Tony Foresta. No gopro angles for this show. Plus, I did not get time to plug into the soundboard and there is no multitrack. You get the G9ii angle I was operating along with the GH5S which I clamped to the plywood shelf at the mixing board. Audio is with the Schoeps, but sound was not great from where I was standing. Oh well, at least it is a 2 camera of the complete 2nd night show.
Here’s the last multicam from that RKL 2-night run. I gave Shawn my RKL footage from the first night, let’s hope we get a full show video that looks like the 1 song edit for Blocked Out that’s up on instagram. Cigar were really great- they pull off those songs so well live. It was fun to see. I did not get a board mix of the show, so I had to do some work to get the schoeps to sound decent. The good video spot is in an audio dead spot in the room. Sounds good enough to enjoy.
