Huge thanks to youtube commenter James Lee for the help in identifying the venue and date of this show… and also he sent me to the concert database and I discovered that Teenage Fanclub were not on the show. Whew.
Here are the Notorious Johnnys, featuring Johnny Badanjek. Johnny was drummer for Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. After the group disbanded in 1967, Badanjek toured and recorded with Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper, Dr. John, Bob Seger, Ronnie Montrose, Nils Lofgren and others.

Here is the last set from that Rob Tyner tribute VHS- a band called Loudhouse. They were from Detroit, but out 1 album on Virgin in 1991 then disappeared. One of the members ended up in Sponge.

Collections post today from Russ Gibb’s cache of tapes.
The Notorious Johnny’s were a band that featured John (Johnny Bee) Badanjek, drummer from Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels. He has been active, playing since the 1960s.
aand that is all I could find about this band online. Very hair metal sounding. So if you like the hair anthems, tune in.

Man, am I kicking myself over this one. There were more vague Russ Gibb videotapes over on Ebay- this time, there were 3 tapes up for auction with the title “Tyner Tape 1” tape 2, etc. I got Tape 1 and the next few days of posts will be from this tape. It is a nice quality multicamera of a show in an unknown venue in Detroit. What kills me is that the MC says that Teenage Fanclub is at the show- I wonder if they are on tape 2 or tape 3? If these are the openers, what big acts also played? Damnit.

Here is the next one from Russ Gibb- I posted the ALL set last week, here is the Doughboys set. Who is that talking about a lawyer at the end of the set? Is that Smalley? Haha, talking about suing the video guy is VERY punk rock imho.
A little about these tapes: Russ Gibb was a legendary promoter from the Detroit area in the 1960’s/70’s- who did a ton of other things: TV Station manager, School teacher, Disc Jockey, etc. Check his wikipedia for more info (in comments).
Russ passed away in 2019 and someone on Ebay has been auctioning off a bunch of his archival items- show posters, demo tapes, etc. Some of the items that got me interested were these videos. These are beta master tapes with raw footage for the back porch video series/TV show?.
Man, these beta video cameras must have been NICE studio cameras for the quality to be this good for 1988.
I just bought a used high-end beta player from Japan that will arrive next month, so I will try to get a better capture of these.

I didn’t get the OK to post the other video I had planned for today, and Dean Crist asked for the Doughboys set after I posted All yesterday, so here it is. They were such a great band, it’s too bad that they didn’t seem to get the acclaim that many of their peers did.

Here is one that may not get much interest. I will add a bonus post after this of something people will actually want to see and hear!
I bought this off Ebay from the guys who are selling items from Russ Gibb’s estate. There were a ton of really cool beta master tapes. I saw The Bats and figured that this was probably the New Zealand band since they released their first album around this time… turns out it wasn’t them. Detroit had a punk band called Bats who put out a 4 song demo in 1986.. and the logo on the bass drum matches the logo on the demo.. No band member info anywhere.
The worst part about all of this is the tape has no audio. I even tried to normalize it to see if there is a tiny signal I could work with.. nope. Enjoy the silent footage.

Since everyone seemed to either be watching the Back the the Beginning live stream or talking about the concert, I decided to hold off posting until it was over. Then I fell asleep. It was a rough night with my 9 month old pup- I got maybe 5 hours sleep.

This was also on the tape. I tried to look up CBBF and there is nothing on discogs or google or newspapers dot com. If you have any info on this band, please let me know.

As promised, I am going to attempt to post something from each of the 20 collections I have over here somewhat regularly. It has been a long time since I posted anything from Russ Gibb’s tapes. I was able to get my hands on a nice beta VCR for a short amount of time and get clean transfers of all of the Russ tapes I have. No more white vertical lines!
For those who need a Russ refresher (wikipedia): Russel James Gibb (June 15, 1931 – April 30, 2019) was an American rock concert promoter, school teacher and disc jockey from Dearborn, Michigan, best known for his role in the “Paul is dead” phenomenon, a story he broke on radio station WKNR-FM in Dearborn, and as the owner of the Grande Ballroom, a major rock music venue in Detroit. (me) He was also a teacher at Dearborn High School who filmed a lot of small/unknown bands in the midwest. So humbled to have a good amount of his tapes here.
Anyway, Guilty Bystanders were a punk band from Flint, Mi. They put out 1 self/independently released CD. The photo used for the facebook post has more info about the many members that were in the band.
