Superchunk- Black Cat, Washington DC 2/28/98 xfer f/ DAT Soundboard Clone Indie Rock Elliott Smith

Today’s On This Day post is a good one. My old friend Marcus Winfree would tape a lot of the better indie rock bands through the soundboard when they came through town- he did multiple Archers of Loaf shows and more than one of Superchunk. I got to meet him unexpectedly when he and I were at the same Grand Champeen show in Austin a few years back. Huge thanks to him for documenting all of these shows.
There was no flyer/poster or even a newspaper ad for this show, so I took the setlist off setlist dot fm and they do an Unrest and an Elliott Smith cover! This was from a tour with Neutral Milk Hotel.

Built to Spill- Black Cat, Washington DC 5/17/97 xfer f/ DAT clone rebalanced complete show 3 piece

Aw man, I kinda blew it with today’s On This Date in History. I always try to post unique content daily. This one was uploaded to Internet Archive and I did not check. There are 2 things that DO make this version unique: This is from a 48khz DAT clone (not a CDR rip like the internet archive one) and the drums were way too high in the mix, so I rebalanced this in Izotope. Enjoy!

Archers of Loaf- Black Cat, Washington DC 7/26/96 xfer from DAT Soundboard Clone Eric bachmann

I need to make this quick- I didn’t realize I had to be somewhere this early. Here is one that my friend Marcus Winfree taped for today’s On This Date in History. The snare was overpowering the mix so I rebalanced everything else to make it sound better. Oddly there is no documentation of this show so you get a generic tour shirt image.

Son Volt- 9:30 Club, Washington DC 11/3/95 xfer f/1st gen audio tape Sony WMD6C Uncle Tupelo Farrar

Man, am I running behind today. Here is today’s On This Date in History.

I wish I could remember who I got this from. This was one of my very late cassette trades, at a time when I was a DAT snob and didn’t trade cassettes with hardly anyone. I was also trying to collect every.single.son volt show at the time. I finally gave up on that project in 1999 I think. There are still hundreds of Son Volt/Wilco tapes to digitize, so stay tuned.

I really liked the tapes the D6 made when it worked properly. There is 1 EQ band that needs to be dropped a bit and the low end boosted up and you usually have a nice result.

Willie Nelson- Kennedy Center, Washington DC January 1995 Clone of DAT Soundboard Complete Show

I caught up with a trading friend from the ’90s. Damon Bramblett was the man with the Johnny Cash audience recordings and these- a treasure trove of Willie Nelson DAT soundboards. He was friends with someone close to Willie, possibly his soundman.. and he has a ton of these recordings. I got about 8? DATs full of them, but that was about it. Damon asked me to digitize some of my copies of the tapes for him, this is the first one.
It sounds pretty nice except for a burst of digi-noise at about the 41:00 mark… thanks to these cheap DATs.
Let me tell you a little about DATs back then- they were expensive. The audio ones cost about $9 each ($5-6 in bulk), but you could find DDS (digital data storage) tapes that would work as audio tapes for WAY cheaper($3). The absolute cheapest/crappiest tapes were DICs. It was common to try to play back a DIC and have problems- to this day, I call them f*cking DICs.

Jawbreaker- St. Stephens Church Washington DC 6/5/93 xfer from low gen soundboard audio tape

I had a good part of the day yesterday to get through some music projects and I thought I was going to get SO MUCH done… then I started working things across my desk. I got the 45(!) download codes for LPs I bought all done, and 1 audio project that I had already thought was done. That’s it- I got through 8 inches of desk space, and there are about 50 more projects to go. Thanks for your patience.
All of you east bay punk and lookout records fans will be happy since the one project that I finished was all of Todd Pritchard’s requests that had been sitting here since December of 2019. Here’s the first- a nice Jawbreaker soundboard that I rebalanced in Izotope. It blows me away that this church was used as a punk venue for such big bands. We had a place in orangevale that did mostly local shows, but nothing along the size of Fugazi and Jawbreaker.
They get the mixed dialed a couple of minutes in.

Soul Asylum- The Tavern, Washington D.C. 2/26/93 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Enhanced

Here’s another one that Ross Weyman sent over to be digitized- this is #2 of 3 that he sent. This had to be one of Soul Asylum’s last shows in an apparently small venue before Runaway Train took hold.
This one is a bootleg job- lots of heads in the way but the filmer does a pretty good job of getting some clear shots of the band members.

Thelonious Monster- 9:30 Club, Washington DC 2/20/93 Xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Enhanced Bob Forrest

Long-time friend Ross Weyman (traded a ton of Alex Chilton and WXRT tapes with him in the 90s) sent me a box with 3 VHS tapes. This is one of them. This video would not exist, but he politely asked/begged the filmer to get this for him. Looking at youtube, this appears to be the only 1993 full set out there. How cool is that? Thanks Ross!
If you are not familiar with the band, check out the doc “Bob and the Monster”. It’s a good one.

Soul Asylum- DAR Constitution Hall, Washington D.C. 2/10/93 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape

Here’s the last VHS tape from Ross Weyman. Thanks to Ross for sending these my way. This one has been posted online a couple of different ways, but neither are as clear as this one. This one comes from a 1st gen VHS tape, so that helps.
The band was opening for Keith Richards which is why you get a short set. It’s heavy on Grave Dancer’s Union material, but those first 3 songs are a killer start to the set. Neil Young cover toward the end as well.

Robyn Hitchcock- Georgetown Grand Ballroom,Washington D.C. 1/20/93 xfer 1st gen FM Tape Inauguration

I (once again) had planned another post for the “on this day” series- it was a Henry Rollins spoken word set from Maxwell’s in Hoboken. After spending the 2 hours digitizing, burning to disc, and then working it up in Izotope I discover that it is one of the MacKenzie tapes! D’oh!
So I was up late last night trying to figure out what to post. I came across this and realized that this was probably part of an event for Bill Clinton’s presidential inauguration. It’s the same date, and it is at a fancy grand ballroom in Washington DC. I can’t seem to find ANY info about this show happening. No flyers, no entries on newspaper.com (thanks Dan for access). So, let’s go back to when our favorite bands played a presidential inauguration. So cool.
I woke up this morning to folks doom watching and doom scrolling current events. Please take care of yourselves and turn it off and do something good in honor of Dr. King today… or do something good for yourself. We together can make great things happen if we focus and act.
Oh- one last thing. This sounds odd for the first 2-3 minutes. It sounds like the radio station engineer left the crowd mic on. Then he fixes it.

Recorded by: I can’t remember, but he taped it off the radio that day
