Monks of Doom- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca 022691 w/Soundboard Audio xfer from master tapes Enhanc

I’m late to post today, but trust me, this is one to watch. The video was pretty well- lit so all I had to do was degrain/denoise and it came out great. The audio is fantastic- there was this guy in SF named Adam Blinn who would plug a mixer into the soundboard and remix the show live and this one sounds amazing. I tried to reconnect with him or a couple years after that and eventually lost contact. I wonder where he is now…
Anyway, enjoy. Between the performance and the audio and video quality, this is probably the best video I have seen of the early days.

Scherzo- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 2/22/91 lossless xfer from master VHS Tape Lookout Records Punk

Need to make this one a bit quick today. This is another one from Rodney’s (Bay Area Punk Shows) collection- he loaned me his tapes to do the lossless transfer and enhancement. This is already on his great youtube channel, but this is a higher res, cleaned-up version. The funny thing is that we found another Scherzo show after this one on the tape that is not on his channel. So, stay tuned for a new to youtube Scherzo show in the coming weeks. I love finding unexpected stuff on tapes. I have a good Wattie story in that vein- ask me about it if you see me sometime.

MCM and the Monster- Kennel Club, San Francisco 2/20/91 xfer f/8mm Master tape FULL 2 hour show

I need to re-do that Robyn Hitchcock video, so let’s put up another video. This one is from my collection and I taped it back in 1991.
There are 2 separate back stories to this one:

  • I was a big fan of the band. I filmed them twice in 1988 and wanted to see them again. The Kennel was pretty risky to do by yourself- there was an unlit park that was super sketchy at night that you had to walk by after parking. So I made a deal with my friend John Conley- I will go to Buffalo Tom on 2/13 (I had never heard of them at the time) and he would go to MCM and the monster on 2/20. He wasn’t a fan of MCM and the band played for TWO HOURS! Haha, sorry John.
  • The second piece of this was due to me being comically unaware. I have been a fan of the Zeros for a long time and was super stoked to video them at the Cafe recently. I became friends with Hector Penalosa through that, and we have been in touch on and off since then. Hector recently shared a pic of MCM and the Monster from the 90s online and he is in the pic. I am thinking “hm. I wonder why Hector is hanging with MCM”. I then check the band members and HE WAS IN THE BAND. DERP. I never connected the dots. I knew Gary and Miles but the rest of the guys were kind of a mystery.

Anyway, this one is for Hector and the band. Cool to see that there is still interest after all these years. Darla Records (yes, the indie pop label) released a CD of MCM’s a couple years ago… and John Conley’s band Holiday Flyer was on Darla. And that’s how you connect the dots, 35 years later.

The Muffs- Club Lingerie, Hollywood Ca 2/16/91 semi pro multicam Kim Shattuck w/better audio

I know I just posted this a couple weeks back, but I figured out how to improve the audio on this new capture setup. I will go ahead and hide the old post- enjoy!

Here are my ramblings from the original post:
Big thanks to Alan Bruce for asking me to dig this one out of the VHS piles. It had 2 Muffs shows on the tape and neither seem to be out there. I could have sworn that this one was on Youtube but I searched a few different ways, even on different devices and nope.

This is one of the band’s first shows. Their first was in January of 1991. There are a few multi camera shows from Club Lingerie from the early 1990s, done by a person named Video Bob. If anyone knows who video Bob is or how he can be contacted now, please let me know.

Buffalo Tom- Kennel Club, San Francisco Ca. 2/13/91 xfer from 8mm master LIVE

Thanks to John Conley- he introduced me to Buffalo Tom by taking me to this show, and they ended up being one of my favorite bands. This video is DARK, but they intended it to be dark as there was a psych light show happening behind them. I can ask my friend Jim Mclain to brighten this, but I kinda like it as is.

So, remember that ultra-dark video of Buffalo Tom that I posted a few months ago? Well, Jim McLain came by last weekend and helped me get started on improving the brightness and contrast of my old videos- thanks Jim! A LOT of my old stuff will now be posted, or re-posted and you’ll actually be able to see them!

Kai Kln- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca. 2/12/91 Direct xfer from 8mm Master!

Hi, this one is for Marc Malakie- we ran into each other at Old Ironsides last night and we chatted about the old days. He was the biggest fan of Kai Kln’s early stuff! Please tag the band since I am not fb friends with them. A funny side note about this show- they were opening for Blue Oyster Cult and since it was in the bootlegging glory days of the early 90s, they FREAKED OUT about my camera. I was trying to explain to them that I did not even want to video their band, but they wanted the camera out of there. So, it was a quick 30min and bail after Kai Kln’s set.
