I think this was the last time I filmed fIREHOSE at Cattle. This show was unique because there is a guy right in front of watt who may or may not be under the influence of something. He keeps trying to touch Watt, and Mike gets pretty damned annoyed. It was painfully uncomfortable to be that close to that happening. If the high touchy guy is watching this, I’m sorry man.
for today’s On This Day in History, I settled on this one. I got to see (and videotape) Buffalo Tom for the first time 4 days later in San Francisco and they were amazing. Just a wall of sound at the Kennel Club. I have had this tape for 20+ years and the mix was a bit unbalanced- predominantly drums and vocals. I decided to give it a shot in Izotope and I am pretty happy with the results. The guitar is back to the forefront, where it belongs with this band. It takes a few minutes for the mix to settle down, so give it a bit. Look at that list of shows for 2/9/91 in the L.A. region: Rik Emmett at the Coach House, RUDY RAY MOORE at CLub Lingerie, and the Ventures at the Palomino Club. How could someone even decide what to attend? Crazy.

Here’s the last Chomphard video from Eddie’s bag o’ VHS tapes. This is really nice quality for Gilman, the lighting at the warehouse was always less than perfect.

Here’s the Groovie Ghoulies “Classic Lineup”, opening for the dickies in 1991. Eric Bianchi, I am not using “Original Lineup”. 🙂 Taped with the old Aiwa CV-80 with a Sony ECM-909 mic velcro’d to the top.
Since The Dickies are coming to the Blue Lamp this summer (Thanks Gabi and Brian or whoever is putting on the show), I thought I would post the last time I Video’d them- Cattle club ’91.
Here’s Kai Kln’s first appearance on Sacto Active Rock. Cruise over to Jim Mclain’s youtube channel to see the Christmas Episode filmed a couple of years after this one. Kai Kln are: Scott Anderson/Neil Franklin/Sherman Loper and Gene Smith. I am posting over 30 of these shows- please subscribe to my youtube channel if you want updates! Thanks
I pulled a pretty good one for today’s On This Day in History, I think. For a short time, I had a really nice analog audio taping setup. I bought a used/demo Marantz PMD430 from Circuit City (it is like a Sony D5- the nicest portable cassette recorder) and 2 Nakamichi CM300 mics. Some of the tapes from this time frame turned out really nice- in fact, I had a youtube commenter ask me if the Siouxsie show from lollapalooza was a soundboard.. nope, not even close. Dinosaur Jr. Played a show in SF in early 1991. It was a Monday night, so we expected it to be not too crowded- the 1989 show had a decent amount of people but not a ton. We get there late and the place is PACKED. I was only able to squeeze in front of the bar toward the back of the venue. The show sounds ok. The CM300 is a shotgun mic which is intended to be held still on a stand, but I had to hand hold it, which is why this has an odd swirling sound. I was able to use Izotope to boost guitar and vocals, and I am pretty happy with it now.

This was the only time that I was able to see TWR in their hometown. The venue was interesting- there was no good place to place my tripod so I had to film handheld from a distance, so it is a bit shaky at times. This was the most animated crowd I ever saw at a TWR show.

I am taking all of the darkest videos first and trying to enhance them. This one turned out ok. Man, I wish I used a tripod for this one. There was no semi-level place to film from there.
