Y & T- Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento Ca 7/21/84 xfer from master cassette Yesterday and Today

Following yesterday’s Whitesnake opening set, here is Y & T’s set from the same night. It’s funny, I was at this show and I do not remember this set at all. I remember being pretty wasted and trying to climb onstage during Dio, and having security threaten to punch me in the face if I did it again. I was a bit of a mess during the mid 80s tbh. So glad that Doug was able to document these shows so I could hear what I missed.

Whitesnake- Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento Ca 7/21/84 xfer from master audio tape

This might be an all- “Tour Manager Doug” audio week. I don’t think I will have time to prep anything else except for Doug stuff. Good news for you all!
Here is Whitesnake’s opening set for that Dio show that I posted a couple months back. Sounds as good if not a little better than the Dio set. Less crowd noise on this one.

Dio- Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento Ca 7/21/84 xfer from master audio tape Ronnie James Rainbow

I grabbed another 10 pack of tapes from Doug’s box and there were 2 tapes that held very special memories for me. This is the first of those 2. When we(our circle of friends) would go to concerts, we would rarely get everyone on board due to differing music tastes… but when Dio came to town, EVERYONE showed up. Everybody loved Dio, and it was such a good time for all of us to get together to party and see the show. There were about 10 or more of us at this one- I will try to tag everyone I remember.
If you haven’t watched the new Dio documentary, I recommend it. It’s really great.
Huge thanks to Doug for taping this one- it sounds pretty decent after the EQ work.

Control- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca 7/20/84 xfer from master tape Bay area thrash speed metal

More obscurity for you today, but this time it comes from Tour Manager Doug. Control was one of the the early bands in the trash scene. The band had Thaen Rasmussen(Anvil Chorus, Heathen) and Doug Piercy(Anvil Chorus, Heathen, Blind Illusion) on guitars, with Michael Thinger, Joe Bennett, and Ed Bull. They put out 3 demos but never any full length releases.
This is their opening set for the legendary Metallica Mab 1984 show.

Kill ‘Em All (Metallica)- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca. 7/20/84 xfer from master audio cassette

I am pretty excited about this project. Tour Manager Doug- the source of MANY (most?) of the early bay area thrash metal audio recordings sent me a box of about 80 tapes last week. There are so many of his early metal recordings in there that have never circulated, it’s mind-blowing. Historic box of tapes.
I have digitized the first 10 tapes so far. You can expect a couple of these and a couple KALX tapes in the upcoming weekdays. Wayne V’s stuff will make a comeback in a bit- thanks Wayne! Wayne introduced us and helped get this project started. Thanks to Doug for trusting me with this goldmine of stuff.
I figured that I would post the tape that I enjoyed the most so far. A secret show by the band Kill ‘Em All, which was code for Metallica. Killer drunken show, complete with Ness Aquino yelling at the crowd to get off the speakers! The image for this recording also came from Doug’s collection- he has the original sign that was on the Mab’s door that night.
I EQ’d the hell out of this one to drop some of the highs and boost bass. The extreme bass boost caused some low end noise- I might try to Izotope that out. Sounds good enough for me.

Slayer- Old Monterey Music Hall, Monterey Ca 7/16/84 xfer from master audio cassette thrash metal

It’s Thursday- time for the last audio post for the week, and it is another TM Doug Slayer show. How many times did Doug tape Slayer? A shit load. The answer is a shit load.
You might be wondering why there is a colorful children’s museum(next to a massage parlor) being used as the youtube photo for this one. I found a flyer online and if you look at the super small print, it seems that this is close to where the Old Monterey Music Hall used to be. Go figure. I wonder how many times I have unknowingly walked past a long-gone classic venue like this one.
This one is on the “very good” part of the Doug recording spectrum. Nice bass and clarity of instruments.

Slayer- The Stone, San Francisco Ca 7/13/84 xfer from master cassette Thrash Metal

Here’s another amazing recording from tour manager DOUG (not Mark, what the hell was I thinking?)… a nice sounding show from mid-84, on the bill with Laaz Rockit and Lizzy Borden!
The Stone always had nice sound- I think it was because just about every surface in that place was carpeted. This show was so clean that the EQ made it sound pretty damned nice. Thanks DOUG!

Anthrax- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 7/7/84 xfer from master audio cassette Neil Turbin Thrash Metal

I just saw a facebook post from Charlie Benante that it was Scott Ian’s birthday on 12/31. Wow, imagine having that date as a bday- there’s always a party. It looks like they had a good time…
Here is a show from Tour Manager Doug where Anthrax were most definitely NOT having as good of a time (get it? NOT). People who were at this show told me that a couple of band members came out in leopard print spandex/stretch pants and the spit started to fly. Man, the bay area did that “de-posering” of out of town bands a couple of times that I am aware of with Slayer’s “take off the makeup” show and this. Well done, guys.
I EQ’d this one as best as I could, but it sounds similar in quality to the exodus set. Regardless, I am still super grateful of Doug to tape these- I had only ever seen B&W photos of this show from Metal Mania.
