Henry Rollins and Ian Mackeye- The Rat, Boston Ma. 2/4/87 Spoken word together xfer from 3rd gen

NOTE the first 20min of this is rough- lots of audience chatter. It gets a lot better after 20min. Fast fwd if you can’t stand it- it’s worth the listen!

I think this was a one of a kind event- Henry Rollins and Ian Mackeye on stage together, reminiscing about the fun times working at the pet shop in D.C. and talking about ill-fated tours. Henry was doing spoken word shows regularly at this point, but I have never seen Ian do one of these since.
I also have a different recording of this show (recorded by Jim Hildreth) that is longer- 90 minutes- but lesser quality. Let me know if you are dying to hear that one and I’ll pull it out.

Edit in Sony Soundforge 10- copied right channel into left, as right channel had annoying high end distortion

Kilslug- The Rat, Boston Ma. 1/8/87 xfer from 1st gen tape Rathskeller Upside Down Cross Adolf Satan

Hi Everyone, it’s Kilslug Friday! Here is yet another Kilslug show from the infamous Rat in Boston. These shows sound like drunken parties, wish I was there.
In the early 90s, I found a cassette trader with a bunch of Kilslug master audio recordings so I snagged them all. It looks like only 1 or 2 are on YT so far, so you all get to be abused with Kilsug the rest of the week.
Listen to the “Answer the Call” album for the properly recorded versions of these songs.

Kilslug- The Rat, Boston Ma. 9/17/86 xfer from 1st gen audio tape Dirge Upsidedown Cross Adolf Satan

For those unfamiliar with the genius of Kilslug, I have a story for you.
Back in the 80s, we had no internet to give us instant music recommendations. I was a big fan of Ron Quintana’s Metal Mania zine and would pay close attention to their record reviews. They reviewed Kilslug’s “Answer the Call” and called it “Death Death Metal”. I was like, holy shit, how heavy can this be? So I bought it and brought it home…. and I was like “What the fuck is this SHIT?”. It was this dirge of noise and Larry Lifeless’ wailing about being a worm and stuff. Over time, I forced myself to listen to it because I spent money on it… and I started to like it. I have been a fan ever since.

The Queers- The Rat Boston Ma 6/4/86 xfer from unknown gen soundboard tape Pop Punk

Here’s a late one from Jason Ross’ collection. I pulled another few tapes to digitize and had no idea that this was a board tape until I ran it. Drums and vocals were pretty maxed out on this one so I did my best to put some guitars in there. The guitar is a bit too loud for the first few minutes and then the mix settles in.

Kinda wild that they have been at it for 40 years.

Oh, and the person in this image doesn’t have anything to do with the Queers. It was one of the only old photos I could find of the club.
