Negative Approach- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca. 6/29/22 4K UHD Multicam Rode Videomic Pro Stereo

Here’s a late one today. I was going non stop all day long. This show was nuts. I got there a little late and totally unprepared equipment-wise. I had just filmed 1/2TB worth of video over 4 days in texas and I had not prepped much of anything for this show. So, I am getting ready and none of my gopro battery packs wanted to work. I frantically swapped battery packs around until I finally got 2 of the 3 going, which was fine because there was no room for a 3rd one anyway.
I did not realize this, but one of the camera stands was damaged beyond repair at this show. I went up to the stage and was shocked that the one I stuck right by Brannon made it. It wasn’t until I tried to use it in Reno that I realized it was bent. Glad the gopro survived.

Sick Burn- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca. 6/29/22 4K UHD Canon HFG60 Rode Videomic Pro Stereo

I got to the Negative Approach/Sick Burn/Holehog show late and Holehog was playing. It was so crowded in the room that there was no way to get to a spot to film them. So, missed Holehog.
Next up was Sick Burn. So not only did I get there late, but I was totally unprepared. All my time between set breaks was spent scrambling to find battery packs and memory cards for the next set. Unfortunately, that made me miss almost the entire first song, a killer cover of Uncontrollable Urge. This is what happens when you shoot 1.2TB of video over 4 days, then try to make it to a show with 1 day break.

Slobberbone- Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton Tx. 6/26/22 4K UHD 5 Camera Multicam Dan’s 20th Anniversary

I’m late today, but it is a good one. It’s another multicam from the June Texas trip. A rare Slobberbone show! I just realized that I probably filmed more sets in Texas this year (6 sets in June and 11 last week) than at home! That’s kinda crazy. I truly love Denton and Austin, and San Antonio is pretty cool- I could take or leave the rest of the state…. and don’t even get me started on Houston. Huge thanks to Anonymous for the matrix work- he went home early so we only had my Rode mic and a board mix, and he made it sound good.
After the show, Brent told me his legendary story about collaborating with Dave Pirner. Funniest thing I have heard in a long time.

Centro-matic: Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton Tx. 6/26/22 4K UHD 5 Camera Multicam Dan’s 20th Anniversary

Happy Friday everyone! Between all of the Texas travel (I was working as much as I could in between driving and the concerts), and work blowing up when I returned, I am ready for this weekend. Man, that’s a crappy sentence.

Here is another multicam from the June Texas trip. This was the final performance of the 4 show Centro-Matic run over that weekend. This one was a bit odd, since they played first that day at noon- it was Dan’s 20th anniversary of being a venue, and a ton of bands played.

The show isn’t perfect video-wise (a couple of angles are overexposed) but I picked this one for 3 reasons: This is the only set where all of my cameras were in the right place AND they all worked, the board mix was good enough to use as-is with a little rebalance… and the performance kicks ass. It seems like they are playing their hearts out because it is the last time they are playing for a while…

Centro-Matic: Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton Tx. 6/24/22 4K UHD Multicam with Matrix Audio Will Johnson

About a month ago, I went to Texas with my friend Anonymous and his wife. We had a blast and got to see Centro-Matic play a weekend’s worth of shows at Dan’s. Man, I love Denton- it is like an oasis in the middle of Texas.. even moreso than Austin (Blasphemy!).
But anyway, I brought 5 4k cameras and Anonymous brought his schoeps audio rig. Brent Best was doing sound for the shows and they sounded great. I don’t know if I will ever get used to asking one of my favorite musicians to plug me into the board.
In general, a lot of stuff can go wrong when doing multicam and this one is no exception. The gopros conked out early, so this goes from 5 camera to 2 camera as the show progresses. Great set- probably my favorite set out of the 4.

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster: Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton Tx. 6/24/22 4K UHD (almost) complete set

Here’s a break from the recent metal onslaught. Last weekend, Anonymous, wife of Anonymous and I flew to Texas to see Centro-Matic play 3 shows. I stuck around for a 4th day to see Centro again and Slobberbone.
Anyway, Justin was in a band called Water Liars, and he released a couple albums with Centro’s Will Johnson under the name Marie/Lepanto.

Happy new year!
We have posted a few videos from this weekend, but I have been holding off posting this one from the first night because so much went wrong. When I went to put the gopro on stage by Will, he politely asked me to move it elsewhere but there was not much real estate available.. so I kinda panicked (not much time), set it on a drink table and did not get a good angle. The gopro on the other side of the stage somehow got set to take a bunch of burst photos, so that was also no good. So, this one is a 3 angle deal which turned out ok. I guess it was a good warmup to the other shows.
This leaves only one video from the weekend not edited- the set that was also streamed via prekindle. I have 2 angles that I’ll probably just not do unless someone is dying to see it. The funny thing about prekindle is that I have now paid for 3 live streamed shows, and I have not seen any of them in their entirety! I missed screen recording the first slobberbone one, the second slobberbone was accidentally recorded as audio only, and then this one. I had to talk my daughter through the steps to screen record the show over the phone- she did great. But the stream froze at the end… I guess I’ll never see their work. It’s too bad, since they do a fantastic job.

28th Day- Light Rail Studios, San Francisco 6/18/22 4K UHD Multicam Barbara Manning

3 weeks ago, I got to go to Parker’s 60th birthday party- and what a party it was! Excellent free(w/admission) BBQ, cheap drinks, and 28th Day reuniting for the first time in about 10 years. They sounded amazing. I posted my single camera version of this show right after the event- this is the 4 camera multicam.
I have been told that there is a guy named Nick Dumitriu who has better audio of this set, but I can’t seem to get in touch with him. If anyone can help, let me know.

28th Day- Light Rail Studios, San Francisco Ca. 6/18/22 4K UHD Single Camera Version Barbara Manning

I filmed this with 4 cameras, and it is in for edit now… but I screwed up the audio recording a bit so I hope someone.. anyone has a better audio track to use. Note to self- don’t ever change the attenuation on the church audio amp.
Man, what a fun party. Parker Gibbs turned 60 and had a bunch of great bands play. Many of them (like 28th day) reunited/flew out etc just to play the show. There was free GOOD food with your paid ticket. The studio was super nice- it sounded great in there. Let’s hope better audio surfaces. It’s not that bad, but the clipping bass drum drives me nuts.

OK, it’s time for mediocre Monday. This band kicks ass and the recording is good as well. The only reason to post today was my mediocre job of only capturing one song. I was outside talking with people and missed the boat on these guys. Whoops.
Also mediocre is the fact that I screwed around with my mic/premp/input camera settings and completely screwed up the 28th day audio. I hope that Parker can rescue the audio. Happy birthday to Parker, btw. What a party! The final mediocre thing was me bailing after 28th day because I was tired and missing the rest of the show. You can blame kids and a 6am wake up call that day.
