Black Tomato- The Loft, Sacramento 6/28/99 xfer f/master audio cassette Punk !!! Chk Chk Chk

This one from Ken Doose’s boxes of tapes is pretty representative of the importance of his collection. This is one of the only recordings of this band, and possibly the only one. Google searches yielded no info on the band. I turned to the Nokill I/Dave Smith’s great Sacramento band list for info, which is what I always do when the usual searches yield nothing… and there is some info.

Black Tomato had David Paul on Guitar, Danny Offer on drums, Allan Wilson (!!!/chkchkchk), and John Pug(!!!/chkchkchk) on bass. Cool.

The Knockoffs- Bojangles, Sacramento Ca. 6/25/99 Roland MX5 Mix DAT Sbd Master

Here is another one of those Roland MX5 mixes that I used to do. I took the raw mix (you can hear the raw mix at the beginning, I start messing with it at about 50 seconds in) and boosted guitars and panned them in each channel. I screw up and guitars are a bit too loud at 3min, but I fix it eventually. Great sloppy show by the knockoffs. I must have been late to the show, as it cuts in and ends at 23min. Really enjoyable at 12min onward.

Aus-Rotten: 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/13/99 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette

Since we had video yesterday, let’s do audio today. It’s been a bit since I posted something from Robert Eggplant’s collection. I have another big box of his tapes to get through over the next month or so.
I did not know much about Aus-Rotten until I got their discography earlier this year, and they rip. This is incomplete- cuts at 17min.

Frenchy-KALX Live in Studio Berkeley Ca 6/5/99 xfer pre-fm master tape East Bay Ray Dead Kennedys

Here’s one from Rick Sylvain’s amazing collection of KALX master tapes. Frenchy were a jazzy, loungy band who had a couple of releases on Dionysus Records. It looks like the most recent release before this session featured East Bay Ray from Dead Kennedys on guitar. I did not get a chance to check and see if he is on this one.

Groovie Ghoulies- Heritage Fest, Camp Pollock, Sacramento 6/5/99 xfer DAT Soundboard Master RIP Jay

Here’s the only other set that I recorded at Heritage fest. I will always regret not recording the Skirts set in between the Knockoffs set and this one- it was the first time I had heard them, they opened with Girlschool’s “c’mon let’s go” and I was an immediate fan for life. I had my kids with me and my 4 year old threw a huge fit while getting water and made me late getting back. I will always remember him laying in the dirt throwing a huge fit, with those foam earplugs sticking out of his ears.
This is another post which features the photography of Jay Spooner, who we unexpectedly lost this past weekend. R.I.P. Jay.
Like the knockoffs set, this one is pretty special. It turns into an all star jam with members of the knockoffs coming up to do vocals, and Wendy from the Skirts giving Jaz Brown a rest by playing a couple songs. Fun set!
Mix started off good, but I think someone adjusted their stage volume (coughROACHcough) so the guitar drops out of the mix. I rebalanced in izotope and boosted the guitar a bit. Now it is a little too loud at the start and a little too low later on.

Knockoffs- Heritage Fest, Camp Pollock, Sacramento Ca 6/5/99 xfer from DAT Soundboard Master RIP Jay

Mediocre Monday is cancelled this week. The Sac music community received shocking news over the weekend- beloved musician and photographer Jay Spooner passed away unexpectedly. I did not know Jay personally, but after hearing so many wonderful things from others, I wish I did.
Danny Reynoso and Allyson Seconds both posted photos from what looks like the same show at Heritage Festival, I think from 1999. Everyone is right- Jay was able to capture amazing shots of musicians.. he just had that knack for timing. I hope folks don’t mind that I used his photos from that day for today’s and tomorrow’s posts.
I hadn’t planned on digging this DAT out to digitize until I saw these pictures, but I am glad I did. What an incredible set by The Knockoffs. It’s the usual (great) set, but then at about 21 minutes in, they start playing covers.. covers I have not heard them ever play before… and some have not been played since to my knowledge. Books about UFO’s(!), Born to lose, Aqua Dirty(!), and Dancing with Myself along with the best of the first album. Awesome.
Oh, one last thing- this was transferred flat- no rebalance or remixing. Eric Bianchi is a bad ass. Mix gets better after a few min.

Murry Hammond- KNON, Dallas Tx 6/00 Interview and Live in Studio xfer from 1st gen cassette Old 97’s

Sorry for the late post. Given the storm and its aftermath, I am pretty sure that nobody in Sac was missing the post for today anyway. Since it is so late, you get a short audio post. Murry is the secret weapon of the Old 97’s. Looking forward to seeing them in a few months in Chico and Roseville.
I have another really cool Murry related post ready, but I wanted to ask him if it is was ok to post… and I can’t find his email. Murry, please message/email me if you see this- thanks!

I tried de-static’ing in Izotope and it made it sound weird.
