Mediocre Monday is cancelled this week. The Sac music community received shocking news over the weekend- beloved musician and photographer Jay Spooner passed away unexpectedly. I did not know Jay personally, but after hearing so many wonderful things from others, I wish I did.
Danny Reynoso and Allyson Seconds both posted photos from what looks like the same show at Heritage Festival, I think from 1999. Everyone is right- Jay was able to capture amazing shots of musicians.. he just had that knack for timing. I hope folks don’t mind that I used his photos from that day for today’s and tomorrow’s posts.
I hadn’t planned on digging this DAT out to digitize until I saw these pictures, but I am glad I did. What an incredible set by The Knockoffs. It’s the usual (great) set, but then at about 21 minutes in, they start playing covers.. covers I have not heard them ever play before… and some have not been played since to my knowledge. Books about UFO’s(!), Born to lose, Aqua Dirty(!), and Dancing with Myself along with the best of the first album. Awesome.
Oh, one last thing- this was transferred flat- no rebalance or remixing. Eric Bianchi is a bad ass. Mix gets better after a few min.
