C.O.C.- The Anthrax, Norwalk Ct 5/29/87 xfer f/low gen VHS tape Corrosion of Conformity

I have a busy day AND there are 3 posts today, so let’s get them going. It will be random posting times today-more than usual.

Oh, and today is Big Day of Giving. While the Sac Music Archive is not on the official BDOG website (they wanted me to pay $50 for the hope that someone would donate to us), we are still a 501c3 nonprofit and your donations are tax-deductible. I haven’t been preaching this lately because I know many people are struggling financially. But, if you are in a position to give and feel that this is a good cause, hit up the links on the website. Thanks.

This one is from Chris Eng’s collection. I have gone through most of Chris’ masters that are easy to reach so now I am working through uncirulated tapes he got in trades. This one doesn’t appear to be out there, and it seems to be a very low gen copy. It’s during the short time that Simon Bob was singing in the band.

Capitol Punishment- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/30/87 xfer f/master VHS Tape enhanced Fresno Punk Pt.2

Chris Eng taped this one back in 87. When I went over to his house to pick through videos, we found part 2 of the show, but pt1 still needs to be found. Since this is a good sized chunk of the show, I figured it was worth posting. I will repost if we find the rest. There might be a board tape to synch as well. Someday…

Social Club- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/29/87 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette

I looked everywhere and I cannot find anything about this band. They were apparently from that early alternative scene in SF since they were playing with the Ophelias.. but I can’t find a thing. Let me know if you know anything about these guys.
This is another 1 song short one that Radley gave to Wayne Vanderkuil as filler on a tape.

The Queers- The Rat, Boston Ma 5/28/87 xfer f/low gen VHS tape Pop Punk

Here is one that punk archaeologists should study because it is definitely the start of something. The band playing early versions of songs we all know, the new wavey-hared people dancing in the crowd. Joe King being so young I didn’t recognize him.. just all of it. One to be studied for sure.

Blind Illusion- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca 5/23/87 xfer from master VHS Primus Les Claypool

More goodness for you this Friday from Chris Eng’s collection. I think that Chris might have posted a portion of this one to the official Blind Illusion channel, but this is the complete set, degrained in 1080. Thanks Chris!
This show features Les Claypool on bass, who would become well-known with Primus. Larry Lalonde (Primus, Possessed) was at the show, but not playing with Blind Ill yet- he was still learning the songs. A cool piece of history here. This one sounds great for a stock videocamera mic!
Again, like the Sacrilege posted earlier, this one is dark at times, over exposed at times. Not much I can do about it.

Sacrilege B.C.- Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco Ca 5/23/87 xfer f/VHS Master Enhanced Bay area thrash

Last video for the weekend, and it is a good one. I love this band, and they never seem to get their due. When people talk about bay area thrash bands, you hear Metallica/Exodus/Death Angel/Forbidden etc etc… but Sacrilege was easily at the same level as many of them.
This one was hard to clean up- the lighting at the Mab goes from too dark to overexposed, so I could not do much with lighting. I was able to denoise it a good deal. I like this one better than my set at the Lite Rail a year later. This one sounds way better than that one.

Attitude- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/23/87 xfer from master soundboard tape rebalanced Adjustment

Wayne’s collection continues to deliver the goods. This mix was pretty weak, but it was so clean that I was able to push Izotope harder than usual and make it decent. The mix fluctuates, so you will hear the snare way up in the mix to start then fading away later in the set. Overall a good mix for the time frame.
Attitude clearly went over time at this show- you could hear the sound man telling them that they had 1 more song.. so they play 2 or 3 more. Fun set- this may be the first show as “Attitude” after Keith left and they dropped the Condemned from the name.

Gang Green- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/17/87 xfer from master VHS tape enhanced Boston Punk

I should probably leave to get to Aftershock pretty soon, so I will make this quick. No aftershock videos today- the main sets are still processing. Believe it or not, it takes about 25-30 hours of denoising/processing and audio EQ and synch to get 1 90 minute set ready from that ZS200 camera. Is it worth it? Dunno. you tell me 🙂 Slayer part 6 of 8 is processing now and will be done in about 3 and a half hours…
Anyway, here is a RARE UNCIRCULATED video from Gilman. The VHS tape even has “private- do not share” on it. Maybe Chris didn’t like the lights being shut off on the band, or maybe he didn’t want the ol’ middle finger at the all-ages crowd to get exposed.. Regardless, here is it. Chris said that the “no trade” statute of limitations expired, so here you go. Enjoy.
There is also a board tape of this show that is pretty much all drums and vocals. I’ll see if it can be izotope’d and synched with this… one day.
Stick with this one, it gets better, then worse.

M.D.C.- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/17/87 xfer from master VHS tape Enhanced Hardcore Millions of Dead

I was planning to post a video by a new contributor to the archive today, but I got busy and did not get it uploaded in time. Expect some really cool uncirculated early 1990s videos of bigger artists from Los Angeles arenas… next weekend. Stay tuned.

Instead, let’s head back over to Chris Eng’s endless collection of shows he taped with his VHS camera in the late 80s. We were so lucky back then, with great bands like D.R.I., Verbal Abuse, Attitude/Adjustment and so many more playing every weekend seemingly. I am pretty sure that Chris has soundboard tapes to pair with a lot of these Gilman shows, so don’t be surprised if this gets reposted with better audio someday. I need to dig into his audiotapes and get them all prepared.
Another great set by MDC during the “Smoke Signals/Blood’s for you” era with Gordon on guitar.

Stikky- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 5/17/87 xfer from master VHS Tape Enhanced Chris Dodge

Taking the waywayback machine for this one today. It’s pretty amazing that Chris Eng’s video camera was able to get such good results- you can see the burn in at times (indicative of an archaic camera) but the picture quality is remarkably clean. I just had to do a very light degrain and it looks good. Audio is pretty nice as well- once I locate the board tape from this set (I know one exists of Gang Green from that night), I will synch it up if it is worthy.
Thanks Chris! Great stuff.
If you check at about the 15 minute mark, you can see the “Melody Pop Orchestra” (ft Wayne Vanderkuil) come on stage with their slide whistles for a song.
