Jello Biafra and the Melvins- Crystal Ballroom, Portland Or 11/5/04 xfer from master tape

it’s time for the Patreon Voter’s Choice for the week! That means that you get TWO videos today. You all need a palate cleanse anyway I bet.

I think I got this from someone I traded with in Spain- like, a real “mail the disc from Spain to here” type of deal. I can’t remember if he taped this show or traded for this, but it’s not too bad. Audio is a little thin but it is clear and not distorted. Nice live document of their collab.

Did they really play 3 and a half hours, or is there an issue with this disc?

Live Concert Video

Alice Donut and Friends- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 9/29/91 xfer f/1st gen soundboard cassette w/Biafra

Another one from Eggplant’s first box of tapes. I have another box that I am working through now with some really cool stuff.
I think most punks have heard of this band. They were on Alternative Tentacles forever from the 80s-2009 with a few other releases mixed in between.
The tape says that the encore features Jello Biafra, but it is hard to tell. I think it is during all of the moaning/screaming on “I wanna be your dog”

Audio Live Concert

Jello Biafra- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 9/15/90 xfer from 2nd gen VHS tape Spoken Word

Here’s your On This Date in History post. Sorry it’s so dark. I had big plans for this one- brighten/denoise etc but it didn’t work out. We also have a partial master soundboard tape here. One day, we’ll do a lossless VHS transfer, enhanced in Adobe/neat, with soundboard synched. Today is not that day.

It looks like another 4 post day. I promise I’ll slow down soon.

Live Performance Video

Jello Biafra- KABC-AM Talk Radio int w/Michael Jackson, Los Angeles Ca 4/2/87 PMRC Obscenity Trial

Here is a MUST LISTEN for today’s On This Date in History. This is an interview with a remarkably well-prepared talk radio host shortly after the PMRC Senate hearings. One of the right wing/religious people trying to take action against the music calls in, and Jello is remarkable in his off-the-cuff debate with this person. Unfortunately, when you hear Jello talk about the state of politics and the country, it seems that not much has changed in the 38 years since this took place.
This is AM radio, so adjust quality expectations accordingly.

Audio Live Performance

Jello Biafra- Guest DJ Discussion KXLU-FM 88.9 Los Angeles Ca 2/11/87 xfer f/ unknown gen audio tape

For today’s On The Day in History, Jello Biafra was a guest DJ on KXLU back in 1987. Unfortunately most songs have been edited out, but Jello does a great job back announcing, so you can search them out and play along at home if you’d like.
Jello was in L.A. for his spoken word performance at the Variety Arts center that week.

Audio

Jello Biafra- Laundry Works, San Jose 11/7/86 xfer from master tape Spoken Word Dead Kennedys

Here’s a long one for you, so it’s good to get it posted early so you have plenty of time to listen today.
One of the most fun things about digging through Wayne’s box of tapes is stumbling upon stuff like this, which was clearly taped by him (he lived in the south bay) and never circulated. The quality on this is decent, there is a bit of noise in the room I could not mix out… but it is listenable. It’s Jello in a laundromat nightclub- how can you beat that?

Audio Live Performance

Jello Biafra- Rodney on the Roq, KROQ Pasadena 1/10/82 xfer f/2nd gen cassette interview and demo

Today’s on this date is also early so you can plan your events later today accordingly.

This one is really cool- long interview with Jello and some LP tracks. I think some DK demos are also played- not sure if they made it onto a later reissue, but here they are from 1982.

One of the few good things about living in Whittier in the early to mid-90s was meeting a lot of people who had been in the music scene for a long time. I traded cassettes with some folks who had things like this. It would just come up in conversation at a concert “hey, I have this tape I got from a friend”. Or I would meet folks like Kevin Haynes, Todd Nakamine and Joe Hunter, who became good friends and are friends to this day.
