Rush- The Forum, Inglewood Ca 11/27/96 xfer f/1st Gen VHS tape complete show Geddy Lee Neil Peart

Today’s On This Date in History comes from Bootleg Cowboy’s collection of VHS tapes I have had here for a loong time. In fact, his collection was the first I took in. After yesterday’s MDC debacle, I am paranoid about posting something that is already out there on YT, but this one doesn’t seem to be out there. That’s unusual for a band like Rush. This show is close to 3 HOURS long! Kudos to the cameraman for bootlegging a concert for that long. Not easy.

I tend to not celebrate holidays like this (you know, the ones where you were fed a line of BS in school and then you find out later what really happened), but I am super grateful for everyone who is supporting my attempt to make my hobby into my full-time job. You seriously have no idea how much you have helped me personally by being here, encouraging and helping me, and supporting me. Thank you.

Ben Folds Five- Whatever and Ever Amen Advance Cassette xfer f/Master Tape

LATE collections post tonight. In fact, expect some wacky post times for about the next week because I have so many parts of my life blowing up at once, who knows when I can get anything done. Still going to do 2 posts a day though.
This is another one from Kaiden Skinner’s small batch of tapes that he sent a couple months back. this is an officially released album, but the advance cassette is, according to discogs, “Production master of the cassette and vinyl master from Whitfield Mastering studios. The album was entirely produced with analog equipment.”

Fastbacks- Cascais Pavillion, Lisbon Portugal 11/25/96 xfer from DAT Clone w/Vedder encore Pearl Jam

Here is the last Fastbacks post for now. There’s a lot more in the collection over here, so stay tuned. At the rate of 1 post per day, it may take a couple years to get to it.
I did not realize that these were the last shows of the Pearl Jam tour. I happened to pull out the T-Shirt from the tour and it ends with these 2 Lisbon shows. This one is the very last show, and it features Eddie Vedder doing an encore with the band. Cool.

Fastbacks- Cascais Pavilion, Lisbon Portugal 11/24/96 xfer DAT Clone Full Concert Pearl Jam Tour

There was a photo posted to the Pacific Northwest Music Archives group of the Fastbacks actually performing at this show, but I can’t find it anymore. It’s probably for the best, I’ve heard that the photographer is a bit sensitive with the use of his photos. I used the concert poster instead.
It’s pretty cool to hear the band playing in such a huge venue- it’s got that “big concert hall” sound. Eddie introduces the band.

Fastbacks- Vera, Gronigen Holland 11/5/96 xfer from DAT Clone Pearl Jam No Code Tour

Following on yesterday’s The What post, here is the Fastbacks’ headlining set from that same night. This was one of the few (only?) one-off headlining shows for the Fastbacks while opening Pearl Jam’s No Code European tour. This is the longest set I have ever heard of the band playing- I have 30 live shows and this is the longest (sans soundcheck).
Sound quality is not the greatest- I did everything I could to help- I boosted the highs +2 in EQ plus I popped it into Izotope RX8 and tried to push the guitar +5…. the problem is that there is not much guitar there. Those sonic studios/coresound mics are decent when you are close to the stack/line array but if someone is blasting stage volume (KURT!), you won’t get it on the tape.
Still a fun, listenable show.

The What- Vera, Gronigen Holland 11/5/96 The Fastbacks w/Eddie Vedder doing Who & Pearl Jam Covers!

Here’s something that came up last week on the pacific northwest music archives fb group (great group- you should join). Someone posted a picture of the Fastbacks playing in Portugal on the Pearl Jam tour of 1996. I mentioned that I had recordings from that show (and more from that PJ/Mudhoney/Fastbacks tour) and Kurt asked for the Fastbacks stuff to be posted. Here’s the first one.
The What is Eddie Vedder and the Fastbacks doing The Who covers. (get it? The Who, The What)I think this was probably a one-off headlining show for the Fastbacks on a day off during the Pearl Jam tour. They mix in a couple of pearl jam songs (one about Matt Lukin who I think was on the tour with Mudhoney) and finish up with a rousing rendition of Leaving Here.
The quality isn’t spectacular, but it was mastered on DAT with decent mics. I don’t think they had a soundcheck, since the quality improves throughout the short set.
